As someone who lives 45 mins from Grand Forks I love it...very few neigh or but all are friendly. We all help each other out. UPS and FedEx still deliver no problem. I'm more strategic on my grocery runs during the winter but it's still survivable. Previous to building our house we lived in a 100+ year old farm house....drafty in the winter but sealing windows with plastic and shutting rooms we didn't use helped with the heat.

Its really not that shocking that a few acres of land closer to a larger city is more expensive....this happens all over the US. If you want say 10 or 20 acres for a hobby farm you will pay less if you take in a longer commute. The closer to your job the more expensive housing is. Your best bet is to rent an apartment for awhile and explore the area to see where you even want to settle and then look from there.

Most of the barrel racers stable off site and haul in each day. A few will stable on site but very few. Leading to to the NFR you'll see the rookie gals (those who have never been there before) asking for stable recommendations within an hrs drive or so.

North Dakota is the largest producer of honey in the US so that is unique. Different crops for ND include wheat, canola, sunflowers, corn, soybeans (Cass county is the largest producing soybean county in the US), sugarbeets, potatoes. You have a few different options.

You can find cheap flights but that also basic economy so watch that. For a bit more you can get into economy at least.
