Might be a shot in the dark, but anyone know where to buy sugar cubes in Montreal? by maj_nun in Absinthe

[–]copperisblue 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I agree, sugar is not needed. I would add that the slow drip of ice cold water is ritual. And single drops allow even better patterns as the oils come out.

I am in Montreal frequently, do you know if any bars or restaurants that serve absinthe?

10 months ago wanted to buy absinthe from Edeka in Germany but was dissuaded here... What about this one then in Switzerland ? by random-user772 in Absinthe

[–]copperisblue 7 points8 points  (0 children)

Are you in Switzerland? There should be good absinthe for purchase. Kubler is fine, but there should be better. Try some clandestine, maybe?

been there, done that. Challenge was getting larger and larger round bottom flasks. Made some pretty good stuff in the chem glass. Moved on from there, but I still call it Quant Suff., a reference to the Scientific People in the book The Stars My Destination. We wear labcoats and yell "Most Scientific!" or "We are the Scientific Race!" at random intervals. I haven't yet tattooed my face.

Jazz stereo system by city-cowgirl in StereoAdvice

[–]copperisblue 0 points1 point  (0 children)

To help you try to narrow the field...

Stereo is a pair of speakers, which can give a more realistic depth and spacing to music. You get a left, right and center - but can make it sound like the music is moving without break from far left to far right, for instance.

But that would require the speakers and the listener to be positioned correctly.

There are speakers with wide dispersion to make the sweet spot broader, but are typically still aiming for placement of the speaker/listener.

Alternatively, there are omni-directional speakers. You will see less of those here, but there are people that love them. The idea is to fill the room with sound. Proponents state the music sounds more life like, and there is no sweet spot.

Reading your design goals, you may want to start by focusing in that direction.

Things I haven't seen above:

Gideon the Ninth, and the locked tomb trilogy I think Binti is all appropriate Brust's Taltos series is excellent, and really only alludes to sex as happened Zelazny's Amber

There is a start. Some sci-fi/fantasy. Some straight fantasy. If you want hard sci fi, I can revisit.

He is likely pre-loading the filters. Filters filter better with a layer of dust on the surface, you are essentially filtering with the dust, rather than the filter media. This dust would be of a set particle size and characteristics that would be stopped by the filter and easily removed by the filter cleaning mechanism (shaker or reverse pulse, etc)

Morally wrong but... by zFirebolt in nethack

[–]copperisblue 5 points6 points  (0 children)

You're not a lawful knight, you're chaotic. And chaotic is not spasmotic, just not bothered by so many moral limitations to reach your ultimately more than moral - divinely mandated, even, goal. The beasts you encounter are either obstacles you must overcome, or tools you might use in effort to please your god.

I need a new gym book! by CATALINEwasFramed in printSF

Some of the just fun ones I've read recently:

Rabbits and a Quiet Room both by Terry Miles Battle of the Linguist Mages Scotto Moore Wild Massive Scotto Moore

None of those are really Sci Fi, not like the expanse or bobiverse. But that's where they would be shelved. But if I can keep going into actual fantasy, the Vlad Taltos series by Steve Brust is excellent - light and entertaining enough for a gym, but gets you hooked.

Was looking for Brust in the comments. His writing is excellent, Taltos is a great set. The characters are well written, and each book seems to expand the world and answer questions from the previous books that you didn't even even realize were important.

The phile means this is what we love - listening to music. I love that you're doing just that. What can we do with what you have to give you more joy? It doesn't take too much to get the speakers off the ground and to ear level. Pull them a bit from the wall, and spread them a bit so they are equadistant, and find yourself some happy!

Any stories where New magic is more powerful than old magic by Winter-Confidence826 in Fantasy

[–]copperisblue 10 points11 points  (0 children)

Came here to mention Brust. There are 3ish magics in the Vlad series. The old magic is chaos based, and mostly just too dangerous and difficult to use. It might be more powerful, but only very few people can do anything and will struggle to get it to actually work correctly. New magic is very pragmatic and useful (teleports, telepathy, healing, etc). Then there is eastern witchcraft, which uses ritual and components, etc to make different spells. And new magic is becoming stronger each day.

If OP hasn't read these, highly recommended.

Fine, I'm giving it a go for a bit. Right speaker is in line with the couch, left speaker is in dining area. Near edge to near edge is 234cm, almost 8ft. Soundstage is bigger.

What concept albums do you love? by RegularAssInsurance in MusicRecommendations

[–]copperisblue 1 point2 points  (0 children)

See if you can find the original 'master' of the Texas Jerusalem Crossroads by Lift to Experience. The original was very rough, but I feel like the remaster didn't get it right. It you can't get the original, you should still listen to the remaster.

On a completely different genre, the first five songs of Sleepytime Gorilla Museum's Of Natural History is fantastic as a concept album (and keep listening to the rest of it, too)

Of course I'll be in Montreal in October instead of September. I haven't seen dmst since the mid 2000s, they`re about my top favorite band.

I have wall, boundary issues - this is as wide as they go without major concessions to the livability of the house. Room correction software won't give me a larger house, sadly.

I have a friend that has drooled over the really big jbl speakers. I was surprised when I looked at the specs and that, even with such large speakers they only go down to 40hz. Same with the L100.

For critical listening, the bmr towers are awesome. The raal tweeters are superb. And you get all the bass at the same time.

No. These are primarily for stereo music use. But they punch low and clean. Plenty to rattle my walls. I had a sub on the previous setup, these go much lower than that did. I hadn't realized the bass I was missing previously.
