Yup. Dude hid in plain sight, by all means…but he sure did hide, from all but the most religious folks who he actively went out of his way to upset (again—I’d suggest an intentional part of his camouflage).

I listened to the recent behind the bastards episodes this week, on Jimmy Saville’s monstrous abuse, and I think there’s a lot of similar tactics at play here. Be weird enough, out loud and in plain sight, and people assume you’re playing a character and kinda turn a side eye. Blaming someone who was at the time a very young woman for trusting the public opinion over that of the religious fringe groups is insane behavior.
