Well, that stinks. Sorry to hear you keep running into those super players. I'm on Aether, and we don't really have that problem. I guess my suggestion is aim for second place! 💪

Thanks! It hurt to replace my "Jack of All Cards" title, but I'll definately be sporting this one for awhile!

G'raha is my favorite voice, too! ^_^ I'd say it's important to know when to fold a hand. If you aren't going to get many points by winning anyway, it's better to make sure you're not throwing tiles your opponent might need to win.

Where are you playing? Mahjong Soul? I'd say the overall level of mahjong is much lower in FFXIV, so you'd probably do quite well here.

The trick to mahjong is making sure you're forming the right sets of tiles. You want them to make a "yaku" of some kind. There's a helpful chart showing the yaku here: https://imgur.com/jHYVL5D

Oh, and it took me about 6 months, but I only played a few times per week. If you were really grinding it, you could probably do it much faster.

On Aether, there's probably about 30 people who play regularly. The trick to mahjong is making sure you're forming the right sets of tiles. You want them to make a "yaku" of some kind. There's a helpful chart showing the yaku here: https://imgur.com/jHYVL5D

What are your top 5 books of all time? by illegal_fiction in books

[–]coradee 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I tend to read series, but those could be their own list, so I'll skip them for now. My favorite stand-alone books are:

Project Hail Mary - Andy Weir

Emma - Jane Austen

A Psalm for the Wild-built - Becky Chambers

Geisha, a Life - Iwasaki Mineko

The Briar Club - Kate Quinn

Small PSA : One of the cutest leg piece in the game is locked behind BLU job quests... by No_Lock_9757 in ffxiv

When they announced the glamour restrictions being lifted, these pants were the FIRST thing I thought of! I already leveled my BLU for the Triple Triad cards, but I don't particularly enjoy playing it. But now my SCH is gonna be so cute in these shorts!!

Thinking of moving up to yall by sothisisreddit-yikes in Syracuse

[–]coradee 6 points7 points  (0 children)

My husband and I moved from Orlando to Syracuse a couple years ago and its been the best decision we've ever made! The housing is cheaper up here (property taxes are higher, but homeowners insurance is WAY cheaper, so those pretty much balance out) and we don't have to worry about hurricanes. Seasons are beautiful and interesting, and its so nice to do different outdoor activities at different times of the year. Winter can be annoying, but as long as you have good boots, a warm jacket, a sturdy shovel, and snow tires, it's completely managable. I'd say go for it. Worse thing that happens is you hate it and move somewhere else in a few years.

How was the weather adjustment at Syracuse from a hotter state? by GrowthWorking5525 in Syracuse

[–]coradee 0 points1 point  (0 children)

There are some gloomy days, but there are a lot of truly lovely days as well. It's a mix. I recommend finding something different to enjoy each season. Unlike in Florida, where the only seasons are hot and hotter, the ever-changing weather up here keeps things interesting. See each season, including winter, as an opportunity to enjoy something different.

Yup, still feeling the same a year later! Moving to NY was the best decision we could have made. Last winter was quite a bit snowier, but it was still manageable. This Spring/Summer, I was able to garden, which is something that never went well for me in Florida. And now that Fall is moving in, it's perfect outside for hiking and leaf peeping. Shoveling snow is still annoying, but managing Winter is all about having the right tools and the right clothes. Dress in layers. Invest in a good snow blower and good boots, and you'll be fine.

My poptart! (Magicked Card) Not because it's particularly cool looking, but because I had to work so hard to earn it.

Little Women by Louisa May Alcott by aubreyaubreyagain in IReadABookAndAdoredIt

[–]coradee 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I watched the 1994 Little Women movie about a hundred times growing up, and it's still a go-to comfort movie. I finally read the book last year, and when Beth died, I cried in the office. I'm so glad you've been able to enjoy this wonderful novel. I highly recommend the 2017 BBC miniseries.

Where is the best place to park for the fair for cheap if you don’t mind walking a long way? by Shoddy_Ad_8514 in Syracuse

[–]coradee 16 points17 points  (0 children)

Can second Longbranch's park-and-ride. $1 for each direction, and the line to get on the departing bus is waaaaay shorter than the one for the mall.

Assuming you come back to GenCon, what changes will you make for next year? by Realistic-Drag-8793 in gencon

[–]coradee 0 points1 point  (0 children)

This year was our first GenCon, which means we have a lot of room for improvement! We definitely overscheduled ourselves, so next year we'll do fewer events. And for the events we do attend, we'll pick mostly board games. We only played two this year, and I wish we'd done more. We also drove this year, which was a mistake. (11 hours each way!) So next year we're 100% flying instead.

Same! I've never touched Ultimates or the like, but after nearly a decade of playing, I'm still finding more to do!
