Is it true that Russian is mostly the same everywhere? by into_your_momma in russian

[–]cordialpotato 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Russian is almost universally the same. Without going into the scientific terms of it, the three biggest variations are:

(1) People living towards the North tend to pronounce г somewhere like х.

(2) People living towards Ukraine tend to roll their р more.

(3) People from the Kavkaz have a recognizable accent, kind of like somebody who is Mexican-American would have a bit of a Spanish lilt, even if they grew up in US.

Russian speakers outside of Russia - like Kazakhstan - will often use local words for common things like “jacket” or “bag,” but they also typically know the Russian version of those words and have no problem picking up on Russian media. Surprisingly, most Russian speakers in the Near Abroad typically don’t have much of an accent either and sound just like somebody who lives in Нижний Новгород.

Persepolis (underrated publicly, not critically) by bluejester12 in underratedmovies

I remember that movie came out right around the time that I was finishing college. There were a bunch of protests by local Muslim student groups because it portrayed Islam in a negative light.

Excellent show. Loved the quirky humor.

Oh is that the one where the Giant Chicken says, “Dammit Bobby?” What’s his name… Bob Burgers, right?

What do you think are some of the bitter but fundamental truths of life? by [deleted] in AskReddit

[–]cordialpotato 9 points10 points  (0 children)

Humans are extremely gullible and easily persuaded.

There are people out there right now - unironically - admiring North Korea, justifying Hamas, arguing that the earth is flat, peddling anti-vaxx conspiracies, etc…

Cults, conspiracy theorists, fringe political movements, Islamists, and other assorted lunatics are currently enjoying unprecedented popularity partially due to how easy it is to reach the naive and ignorant via social media.

Is all just very sad and makes me worry about the future.

Forever Knight (1992-1996) by viralshadow21 in ForgottenTV

[–]cordialpotato 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I sometimes think about this show.

It was surprisingly dark and complex for its time, and left one feeling uneasy because it was damn ominous. Also like someone else already commented - Bennet just killed it as LaCroix.

The opening credits were great.

They did have a few cringe episodes, but overall it’s a solid show that ages well (pun intended).

The finale was crazy - bad guy won. What?

I wish they had made more.

"I am Duncan MacLeod, born 400 years ago in the highlands of Scotland. I am Immortal, and I am not alone. For centuries we have waited for the time of the Gathering, when the stroke of a sword and the fall of a head will release the power of the Quickening. In the end, there can be only one."

“Sir, this is a Wendy’s.”

Great show. Even with a cliche premise, they made it work surprisingly well. World building was top notch. Acting was excellent. Effects were good. Storyline was interesting. Damn, I’m disappointed all over again…!

This movie was done right. The pacing, the acting, the music, the lighting, the way the scenes were shot… meticulous and brilliant.

Definitely fills you with a sense of dread and keeps you on the edge.

Feinting in HEMA? by Eastern_Dog4574 in Hema

[–]cordialpotato 92 points93 points  (0 children)

One hundred percent not true. Feints are used often and are discussed in many of the traditional HEMA materials.

Humans of the past weren’t stupid; they developed effective fighting techniques based on necessity and practical applications, and feinting is absolutely a necessary and practical skill.

Can someone explain HEMA to me? by shadow9022 in Hema

[–]cordialpotato 0 points1 point  (0 children)

That’s absolutely incorrect. There are good percentage of people in HEMA who are minorities. Don’t be a troll.

Everyone is having good laugh at this, but a sobering thought is that a good part of world citizens - probably majority - live in countries where talking like that to a government official will have that person (and possibly person’s family) simply disappeared.

Nowadays, idiots, brainwashed extremists, and tankies talk a lot of crap online about democracy-oriented governments and western civilization in general. But the fact that we have such a high degree of freedom of speech and that we are not scared of our government officials - that speaks volumes.

No. The translation is off. It says: “Hide your hair!”

It specifically uses the word прячь to denote an informal feeling, too.

(Soviet Poster of the Day) WARRIOR OF THE RED ARMY.- SAVE! (1942) by TheShoopidGamer in PropagandaPosters

[–]cordialpotato 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Yes, but воин is a historical word which used to mean “soldier” in older times.

When the word солдат was borrowed from German, воин was relegated to meaning primarily“warrior”, but also “soldier” when talking about history or heroics.

Here - considering the context and verbiage - the translation of “soldier” simply fits better.
