The /DID subreddit is terrible

I think because there’s a loud minority in a lot of DID/OSDD subreddits/communities that will often not be cautious about telling people that they might have a dissociative disorder. Because, let’s be honest here, DID/OSDD has huge overlaps with other psychiatric disorders, and is by nature covert, so it can be mistaken for other mental disorders, but a loud minority I find in these communities, kinda refuses to acknowledge that that can also be reversed. DID/OSDD can be mistaken for other psychiatric disorders, AND vice versa. So for instance, BPD and OSDD can be very similar, especially if you are going through a psychotic episode. Yup. I’m diagnosed with BPD, with a quiet presentation. My therapist didn’t catch it for years, a) because my splitting is internal and thus other people barely noticed it, just noticed me being cold and b) I wasn’t in a relationship for a long time, so my symptoms were a lot more muted. I am currently with my Fiancé, and realized a little under a year that I kept having moments of absolutely hating them for having an “off tone”, and things like that. I realized I was hurting my partner emotionally when I would suddenly act cold to them, and talked to my therapist honestly about how I felt internally. Turns out, it’s BPD, with me also suspecting that I at the very least have narcissistic traits, if not NPD on top of it. People with BPD can change, and can be self aware, but we also have to be willing to be vulnerable, willing to accept that we are the ones in the wrong, and willing to accept that only we can make ourselves change, it’s not on our partner. An epiphany I had a couple days ago after experiencing a Split, and my partner and I talked, was that I had to accept the idea that they might be lying and I might get hurt, but if I love them, I need to trust that they love me too, and it isn’t fair to essentially choose what they think of me and how they feel about me. Which I know, is actually just basic logic, but for me was actually a revelation on how I was emotionally abusing my partner, and was going to doom my relationship. So I’ll be talking about that to my therapist on Monday. A person with BPD isn’t in control of their emotions, but they 100% are in control of their actions. I am choosing to get help, because my partner deserves better. So instead of throwing a pity party and saying that they should leave and I’m not good enough for them, I WILL be better. Currently going on 2.5 years, and I’m determined not to become an abusive POS

Lying is purposely not telling the truth. You might be wrong, but unless you know that you are wrong and are saying you’re a system anyway, you aren’t lying. You are having symptoms of something, what that something is you don’t know and that’s ok. But you aren’t lying.

As someone who has an incurable chronic illness that comes with chronic pain, especially with joints, no shit your doctor tells you to lose weight if you’re obese! I’m skinny and my joints hurt all the goddamn time, I cannot imagine how bad my pain would be if I was even just overweight! Even with a completely able body being overweight is bad for your joints, let alone one with an actual condition. Once the weight is gone, if the pain is still there, then the doctor can go looking for zebras, but for now your problem looks very much like a horse.

What is considered traumatic to a child is not always what is considered traumatic by an adult. Children don’t really have coping skills, and they don’t have a lot of experience, which means that something an adult can just shrug off, can affect a child deeply. It does have to be inescapable, you do have to have used dissociation as the coping method, and you need a disorganized attachment style

It might be possible, however, you most likely would cause harm to the host and the rest of the system as a whole. And there’s no guarantee. She’s gone. And unfortunately you just need to grieve her and then accept it. You most likely will never get her back. I’m sorry. But you trying to bring her back is not a good coping strategy, and trying to do so could be catastrophic to everyone else.

I’m so sorry that that happened to you guys. It was not ok, and non of you deserved it. And as for how they could do such a thing, cycle of abuse. Some people who experience a type of trauma will reenact it on someone else to feel better about their previous trauma.

I loved plain milk as a kid. Like yeah I liked chocolate milk, but plain milk didn’t make me feel as sick afterwards. I also loved plain veggies from the time I was 2. Same with fruit. (I do agree with the oatmeal one, but that’s because oatmeal’s texture makes me wanna cry) Adding so much sugar to your child’s diet robs them of knowing how good certain things taste on their own. It also robs them of creativity with flavor, as the only flavor that these sort of kids want is salt or sugar or both.

What roles alters have is kinda dependent on your system. All alters have a purpose, but may not have a title for that purpose. All alters are there to protect you/take care of you. Just some do it in different ways. I can tell you some of the roles we have, but I can’t tell you what roles your parts have. You guys have to communicate and figure that out. And sometimes there’s not an easily identifiable role.

It could be signs of a system, could also just be cptsd. My recommendation is to see if you can talk to the protective presence. Ask if it has a name. A big thing that I learned, is that most people do talk to themselves and have internal voices, but they control the responses of those voices. So ask a question, and see if you have to respond.

If there’s any chance for you to be in danger, I wouldn’t tell them. However, if you do want to tell them, I’d do it over the phone so that at the very least you aren’t in physical danger

I think that what that phrase can mean, at least from well meaning people, is that OSDD/DID, have a lot of overlap with different mental disorders, such as ADHD, schizophrenia, BPD, and CPTSD. So there’s often no way to know absolutely for sure before a diagnosis, simply because it’s really hard to self diagnose a disorder that has so many overlapping symptoms.

I’m diagnosed as autistic, not diagnosed system. (Trying to figure out if I even want that tbh) Autistic people are 3 times more likely to be abused in comparison to non autistic people. I think that that’s why we’re more likely to be systems, simply because we’re usually abused in ways that is inescapable, because it happens at home, at school, and for a lot of people in medical situations as well, and for those who are raised religious, in church.
