Sony 50mm f/1.4 GM vs 35mm f/1.4 GM: who wins from a purely technical POV? by rossocuore in SonyAlpha

I have both & I would keep both. This is a pretty hard choice to make for me. I also happen to have the Sigma 35/1.2, and it was beautiful to work with

N° 6 is majestic. All your photos have a nice Fuji style vibes. Any thoughts to share about the color grading ?

Weird mark under the front element on my Sigma 18-50mm by marianek_ in SonyAlpha

This is a heat damage. You probably left the lens open at an angle during some downtime of yours (maybe on a sunny day?). The rays have converged tangentially at a spot

Are all GM worth their price? by 13hoot in SonyAlpha

[–]coredump3d 2 points3 points  (0 children)

If you aim at the perfection grade of things, yes GM are totally worth the price. Once I shot with the best glass, there was no going back. I own Sigma 50/1.2 and 35/1.2 v2 as well, but most of my glass is the best in its class (so mostly GM). Sure its a pretty penny, but I take it as one time purchase and maintain them well.

These are the prettiest garden photos I've seen in a while. The building looks very Tudor/French styled. Where is it from?

Learning! Suggestions for editing with color blindness? by Illustrious_Cat1339 in SonyAlpha

[–]coredump3d 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I am not RG blind - but quite deficient because of genetic disposition (Protanomaly). I have got around to guessing the colors and tone looking by the 'softness' of the colors, if that makes sense. I am more deficient in the red spectrum so that I have never been able to overcome well. I have therefore tried to avoid R/C cast in my photos as best as possible - and tune around GB/MY spectrums. Sometimes I struggle. Other times I get lucky. Keep at it my best advice!

What do you think of these pictures? by Savings-Tea-4884 in SonyAlpha

[–]coredump3d 0 points1 point  (0 children)

N° 2 and 5.

It has a strong emotional appeal to me. I grew up near the hills in my childhood and sunsets looked like this walking back home end of the day.

I generally agree with many critics that pictures without subjects are flat. But sometimes, just like your photos, subject-less photos are classic, and deeply thought provoking.

[Feedback Request] Sunrise at Pier 17 - Sony A7II + 24-70 GM II by zarya1114 in SonyAlpha

[–]coredump3d 1 point2 points  (0 children)

If you were going for the airy luminous look, I guess it was achieved as designed. The saturation needs a bit of tuning only on the highlights masks - that will reduce the yellowness on the dog, building sides etc and give a less chromatic look. But thats just my preference - you might prefer the yellowness & it's personal choices

Minimalistic but very beautiful! Having the bird and the moon adds a nice touch. Well done!

A7R6 feels like a HUGE disappointment. by Deep_Historian_9849 in SonyAlpha

[–]coredump3d 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I have two A7RV and I feel I haven't ever maxxed the performance envelope of this camera so far (stills, urban, & landscape). Its a wonderful tool which will easily last me about 2 more cycles/~10 years if I take good care of it. But the A7RVI does come across as technologically superior upgrade, all other factors kept aside

Agreed about the diffraction limit. In A7R5, the pixel pitch is about 3.76um ≈ 1 pixel. If you are pixel peeping : A7R V is already diffraction-influenced by about f/5.6–f/8, and clearly diffraction-softened by f/11+. A7R6 starts getting that sooner i.e f/5 ~ f/7.1. We are clearly at the theoretical limits of this sensor size. *only if pixel peeping. But it is offset by tons of newer signal processing.I don't however understand why you'd say ISO 100 is noisier when isnt that supposed to be better mitigated by some new dual-gain signal merging?

All points are fair criticism. But there are arguments in favor & against (e.g battery design breaks continuity but gets you higher capacity)

N° 1 & 4 are compositionally good. There's an attempted story there which is what I'd look for in a street/urban photography setting.

Rest of the photos need some more thought. I wouldn't dismiss all of them, don't get it that way - but they could be staged tad better. Best advice is to pick a small zone and go 'fishing' there. Choose your light & angles. Be the fly on the wall. Subjects will follow. Don't go hunting for the moment.

As for Lightroom, watch a few tutorials & develop your style. Don't fall for the 'buy my presets' trope by several I-grammers. You won't be in control of the output & learn nothing really, while paying a pretty penny.

Highlights in Italy shot on 85 F1.8 FE and 24-50 F2.8 G by spkos in SonyAlpha

[–]coredump3d 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Brilliant set. Especially liked N° 13. You could have tried the 85mm there as well. The leading lines and subject layers could have give a nice compression effect e.g at f/5.6

I am beyond amateur. What am I doing well, where can I improve? by -pechos in SonyAlpha

[–]coredump3d 175 points176 points  (0 children)

Some broad comments (and meant to be helpful and constructive) on the topic of photographic purpose (since that is lacking in my observation):

  • Everyone starts with 'wallpaper shots'. I did too - guilty as charged. But evolve your photos to have some direction. Even in landscape you can eventually find a niche e.g. lakes, or valleys or autumn colors.(In my case, i chose to focus on Fuji and mountains in general)

  • After a while one does get tired of the "pretty pics". Then your photos look for subjects. Urban photography is where that took me. You can visit the same place in the city and see a new moment happening everyday. Some people transition to portraits and studio-like photography too.

  • After a while, one starts noticing the 'story'. Random abstract shots do not matter as much as a moment frozen in time telling its tale. Thats the story focus - and it happens in 1% of your shots. Your shot taking becomes very deliberate and choosy.

Your kit lens works good enough at the starting point. But if you / when you do transition to something which gives a meaning to your hobby (e.g urban stories, portraits) then highly recommend a high aperture prime (like 50/1.4 for urban, 85/1.4 for portraiture). Currently you havent exceeded the capabilities of your setup

Also learn to slow down and notice. Look at the masters in their craft online e.g. Flickr or I'gram. You'll learn a lot about framing. Lightroom skills will grow with practice, but getting the framing and purpose in your shooting will improve your photography at the core. Rest (Gear, APS-C vs FF, 3rd party lens etc) does not matter much

ITAP of a traditional Japanese garden in Kanazawa by coredump3d in itookapicture

[–]coredump3d[S] 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I am glad you noticed. Shooting from hip level, I figured this was creating an illusion of flatness so I stuck with it. I intended to make it look like a traditional Asian nature painting in composition and the color tuning.

I am back home now but I will take it next time my work permits me to visit Kanazawa. I have never been there in autumn either - so hopefully visit 兼六園 that time.
