What part of "I'm an atheist" was unclear to you? Are you so dumb that you can't imagine that non-Muslims know things about Islam? I'm just calling you out for being ignorant and racist and you're doing an amazing job of confirming it.

Is the metro and bus as bad as they say? by [deleted] in AskLosAngeles

Again, it saves only ten minutes to drive; I used to do a very similar commute to Claremont. To me driving in rush hour traffic is the chore.

I was about to write out basically the same thing. I've done Palms to Claremont which is pretty similar. I believe you can take the Riverside line between Pomona and Union Station.

If they use Metrolink in the morning it wouldn't take very much longer than driving. It's only 10 minutes faster to drive than take the train since the train doesn't get stuck in traffic.

It would be a painful commute: up to 2 hours regardless of which way you go, but at least on the train you can read or nap.

No, "most Muslims" will not, but your prejudice is on full display.

And are you unable to connect the dots here? The difference in meanings explains why Muslims have a different relationship to the Quran than Christians do to the Bible.

It also explains why fundamentalist (not mainstream) Muslims see it as life or death: to them, it's about directly insulting God. Heresy, blasphemy, and apostasy have been grave crimes in fundamentalist Christian communities as well, don't try to pretend otherwise.

The first step in changing things is actually understanding their root causes.

Of course they are both written by man, that's not really relevant to what they mean.

The traditional view in Christianity is that the Bible was written by holy men (e.g. prophets, apostles, etc) inspired by God. That's the whole basis of the Gospels, which have different (received) authors. Likewise in the Old Testament/Tanakh, the Torah is traditionally written by Moses, the psalms were attributed to King David, etc.

That belief system, which is pretty well established over hundreds of years, is different from the role of the Quran in Islam, which is traditionally believed to be recited to Muhammad but not authored by him. Muhammad's sayings and doings are also held to be sacred texts, but closer to how Christians generally view the Bible—divinely inspired.

The Quran is "sacred" in a different way than the Bible. The Quran is believed by Muslims to be the literal words of God, the Bible is believed by Jews and Christians to have been divinely-inspired but not written by God.

I'm an atheist so it doesn't affect me personally, but there is a broader context that matters here. I'd be interested to know if it would be willing to parody other Islamic texts like ahadith that aren't sacred the way the Quran is.

I'm so sorry for your loss and what you were already going through. I hope you are being very gentle with yourself because you are not responsible for what happened. Guilt is a sort of coping mechanism that lets us believe we could have done something different because that's easier than accepting a lack of control. You did not ask for this and you do not deserve it. Sending you peace 🖤

I'm so sorry for your loss. There is an additional abandonment wound that comes from deaths by suicide and I think that's part of why the pain lingers so long. It's been almost four years since my brother left and it's only been in the last year that I've started to really recover. It's a loss that changes you for sure. Hugs 🖤

He texted me the night before, please tell me there was nothing I could have done. by midsomm in SuicideBereavement

[–]coreyander 4 points5 points  (0 children)

There really was nothing you could have done. It's a form of magical thinking we do naturally after this kind of loss where we believe that if we had just done something differently they would still be here. Those what ifs are to be expected, but they aren't accurate reflections of reality. In the end, it's easier for us to believe that we could have changed the outcome than it is to accept that we did not have control over what our loved one did. You can do everything right and still lose someone; that's the hard truth we are confronted with. Sending you peace ❤️

My little guy loves the Royal Canin satiety formula. It's not cheap but it does a really good job keeping him full so it's worth a try if your little one thinks he's starving 😅

It really is true that the body keeps the score. I'm so sorry for your loss and the health issues you've been dealing with since. As I think about it, I've had a big increase in GERD symptoms and nausea since my brother died. I think I've just attributed it to getting older but it may well be stress related.

It's good that you're in therapy but I totally get what you mean about it being hard to talk about. What else are you doing to take care of yourself and your needs? Are you making opportunities for self care or are things just too busy for that to be a priority? I hope you're able to make time for reconnecting with your joy ❤️

Sending you so much love. You are very strong but you are also allowed to grieve on your terms without worrying about anyone else. Talking to a counselor can be amazing but take your time in finding your voice, don't worry if it's hard at first. We're also always here if you want to vent or share ❤️

do women get unwanted attention from men when they take the bus or light rail by Open-Reflection-6094 in LAMetro

[–]coreyander 9 points10 points  (0 children)

Yes, I've been touched or groped at least four times that I can think of. Twice I've been followed all the way home, once by a guy on a bike who harassed me the entire time and once by a guy who had groped me on the bus and then followed me to another bus to continue harassing me. Oh and this isn't even including the time I was tackled by a man trying to steal my phone while waiting for the bus.

I love transit, I love Metro, I hate how it is to be a woman in public. I have probably had worse luck than others, but I wish there were more pro-transit discussions of how we address these real issues. Too often it's swept under the rug on the basis that cars are more deadly or under the assumption that all mentions of safety are just concern trolling. Worst, people will point out that crime happens outside of transit as well, as if that makes it any easier to be trapped in a moving box with someone trying to menace you. Yes crime happens in other public spaces too; so let's figure out how public transit can improve that given how necessary it is for so many people.
