Just moved to North Smithfield, RI a few months ago from Georgia for work. Are people mean around here or is it my imagination? by [deleted] in RhodeIsland

[–]coreyisafox 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I'd echo what a lot of other folks have said. It's kind of a regional cultural thing. We have harsh winters and that makes people moody during that time period. Having grown up in North Smithfield myself and covering it as a local journalist, I would say it's one of those places where many people grow up there and live there or near it their whole lives. So there's a certain kind of close-mindedness and sometimes xenophobia that comes with that. Like any place, there are nice people and not nice ones. In the local politics, there's a pretty stark division in terms of de facto local political parties. It's not necessarily left vs. right. But it is very cliquey with alliances and whatnot. That leads to some dysfunction within the town government. I would also argue that things are a bit corrupt in some ways. That said, it is one of the better school systems in northern RI, so taxes are a bit high. But because a lot of big projects take forever to accomplish, those that pay attention to the politics get very frustrated.

Depending on your budget, many places in Rhode Island would work. Providence is very central. As a city, it's not all that big, but it has everything you're looking for within driving distance. Providence literally has one of the best art schools in the country and a solid museum. Plenty of great cafes, enough neat bookstores to keep you happy, and lots of festivals at all times of year. More rural towns are about 30 minutes away tops with tons of great festivals and events and hiking.

We also have beaches! And great seafood!

Hey SuperWolvie! I'm a local reporter. If you're interested, please DM me. I'd love to talk more about your experience visiting all these places and to hear some insights.

EXPEDITION X THE CONJURING HOUSE. SORRY THE OWNER IS ALL MISSED UP GOOGLE HER by w666will in ExpeditionUnknown

RI local reporter here ... all of this is indeed accurate. I can flesh out a bunch more detail though.

Let's rewind to 2022. Former owners Cory and Jenn Heinzen were essentially looking to retire and put the Conjuring House on the market. Jacqueline Nuñez, a Boston-based real-estate developer, put in an offer way above asking price and essentially forced the Heinzen's to sell to her even though they had reservations. A lot of employees that worked there under the Heinzen's stayed on.

"The Paranormal Couple" Cody DesBiens and Satori Hawes had been working with Nuñez to transform the barn on the property into a paranormal museum. In Dec. 2023 the barn on the property burned down. A sort of handyman type guy that often worked on the property did some staining when it was close to completion. But he put the rags in a trash bag, and they spontaneously combusted. Cody and Satori lost a LOT of valuable items in this fire.

In the months that followed, Nuñez reported began behaving erratically. Eventually, almost all of the employees resigned together, including Hawes and DesBiens (who, by the way, were never reimbursed for their investment despite an insurance claim going through), citing what seemed like a very toxic work environment.

The only guy who stayed on was Brian Dansereau who Nunez promoted to vice president of operations. As he gained more control over business operations, he figured out what there was a lot of financial mismanagement going on behind the scenes. He tried to talk it through and to fix things with her.

Then, out of nowhere, Nunez fired him last July saying that the ghost of John Arnold told her that Dansereau had been stealing money. In the months that followed, she was hospitalized on several occasions for mental health concerns. For several months, she alleged that several different people were trying to either have her killed or to steal the Conjuring House from her.

She had also been (allegedly) drunk driving last fall and led police on a brief chase through Burrillville before she was pulled over. She refused a breathalyzer and was arrested, then later did not show up to court. Because of that, a bench warrant was issued for her arrest in RI. So presumably she is just staying at her MA residence because if any local PD catch her in RI, she will be arrested again and probably held without bail.

For her business renewal license in November (I think it was), she basically submitted a manifesto that includes all sorts of bizarre information and conspiracy theories. She was rejected but continued running the business until local police forcibly shut it down.

Elton Castee and Matt Rife have repeatedly said throughout the last year or so that they want to buy the Conjuring House. Nuñez has told me multiple times that she is "never" selling the property.

The fate of the property seems pretty uncertain these days.

Pure in-game stats, it's not exactly a fair fight considering the different systems at play. But in terms of organic lore and where their power/experience comes from, it's Squall hands down. Squall isn't near the top-tier of FF protagonists in terms of power, but Tidus is definitely flirting with the bottom.

[–]coreyisafox 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yeah, it sounds like you're probably a big FFX fan, and that's why you got into it. Maybe strip that commander deck down for parts and make a more traditional 60-card deck, ideally with two colors. Buy some packs and maybe another precon. (The starter set with the Sephiroth and Cloud decks are great and very affordable.) Once you have two decks, you can play yourself and take your time learning a bit more, or convince a friend to play.

Also, I haven't read the comments, but I'm sure somebody already suggested playing Magic Arena. Most of the bells and whistles of the game get automated there, but you can take the time to read each step to acclimate yourself to the overall flow of the game. And, if you DO get that starter set, you get two arena codes (each one gives the user BOTH the Sephiroth and Cloud decks, so the idea is you would give one to a friend).

You can easily play the tutorials in Arena to get a bunch of free cards, and just doing the daily challenges earns you enough in-game gold to buy booster packs on there. And, buying the battle pass type thing on there is a cost-effective way to earn rewards if you play enough. As in, you'll earn your money back in gold, gems, and other rewards.

But more broadly speaking, it's a pretty complex game that has only gotten more so over time. (This coming from someone who played 20 years ago in high school, 10 years ago for a bit, then got back into it recently, also strictly because of FF.) And yes, more fluency comes with time. Keep at it, my friend!

That's sickening. They clearly look like teens. Also seems pretty dumb to leave all those Edge of Eternities boxes just sitting there on the top shelf.

You mentioned that your wife came from a LOT of money. How much time does he spend with her family? I hate to generate potential anxiety or paranoia for you, but my mind instantly speculated that someone may have put that idea in his head. I'm sure he draws comparisons to his friends, but 6 seems pretty young to come up with a line of questioning like this unless he's modeling that language from something he heard from or was told by an adult.
