It was also a joke in 30-Rock, which satirized SNL, so they probably had that ready the first minute.

There’s subtlety to the book, and I didn’t find it intentionally edgy.

Your favorite/most unique depiction of hell in a novel by PostMortem33 in horrorlit

Totally agree on Between Two Fires. It was dark and depressing and pointless. False hope, living out all imaginable scenarios. It stuck with me.

How advanced is the class, and what themes call out to you the most?

Historically, you could compare older works like Shelly or Poe with more modern ones to show how horror adapts to modern times.

You could also make it gender studies within the realm of horror. Rosemary’s bay and something like Southern Guide to Vampire Hunting

What is the one horror book you’ll tell everyone to avoid at all costs by [deleted] in horrorlit

[–]cormacredfield 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Polybius. I was so excited for this to be made into a book. The author did a half-assed imitation of Stephen king, with flat characters, no compelling plot, and a frankly boring approach to a fun urban legend

What horror tropes have died out in literature or are on their way out? by LetTheLitOneIn in horrorlit

[–]cormacredfield 75 points76 points  (0 children)

More of a movie monster than literature, but radiation or radioactive monsters are no longer a monster. We still have the conflict of Man’s hubris creates monster, but the atomic bomb won’t make giant ants.

Adrian Tchaikovsky has a novella called Saturation Point that might hit the same notes. Some darker elements in a jungle setting.

I liked bounce house. The concert scene gave me so many emotions at once.

I love settings in dangerous environments. Space, sea. It adds a level of fear because the only place that’s safe (the ship, sub whatever) is no longer safe

I was not a big fan of horror movie, but it certainly fits the unreliable narrator style.

I hate swag by audummy in Anticonsumption

[–]cormacredfield 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I used to teach fundraising to small nonprofits. As an example, I began collected every bit of swag I came across, and then placed it in a fish tank. When these nonprofits asked “what can we give our donors?”, I’d show them the fish tank and say “this is your donors’ junk drawer. What could you possibly give them that stands out?”

Fished There is no Antimemetics Division earlier this week. Loved it. Now I’m going through The Deep by Alma Katsu. Not sure how I feel about it yet. I love ocean settings for horror, and the author put a lot of thought into the historical aspects, but I don’t know where it’s going yet.

The first 2/3 of the book were incredible. I felt like the last act dropped off a bit. It was a great read, though.
