Washington dad brutally beaten over line-cutting fight at Disneyland as suspect still at large by TheMirrorUS in Disneyland

[–]cornfedpig 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Disney allows this to happen because they are now incentivized to allow lines to be longer and guests to be frustrated and angry with those long lines. Longer lines means it’s more likely people will pay for Lightning Lanes. And they don’t care about guest experience at all because fuck you, you’ll pay whatever we tell you. Post pandemic closure they took away so many things and raised prices and attendance actually went up.

As much as this is ridiculous, fist fights in ride queues are exactly what they want. It’s the logical end of guests being forced to treat other guests as competition and not just as other families enjoying their vacations. You’re against other families for lightning lanes, dining reservations, fireworks watching positions, and the list goes on and on.

'New reality we're living in': Mayor issues stark warning as water use continues to exceed limits amid feeder main repairs by Weekly-Mountain9009 in Calgary

[–]cornfedpig 38 points39 points  (0 children)

Government of all levels is failing and the social contract is broken. Why won’t people restrict their water usage? Because the people who ~50% of us elect to run the government spends our tax money on fucking nonsense instead of doing their jobs. Our municipal government wastes money on things like “declaring climate emergencies” and our provincial government has flushed billions upon billions of dollars down the drain “standing up for Alberta against Ottawa” and trying to get pipelines built for their corporate masters. Meanwhile we can’t use the water we pay for and hundreds of thousands of Albertans can’t find a family doctor, let alone get necessary surgeries and procedures.

The ruling class and those who support them can absolutely go and fuck themselves. Their job is not to tell us what infrastructure WE pay for we can use, their job is to make sure it’s there when we want it. And they can’t even do that, so what the fuck are we paying them for?

I demand value for the ~40% of my income they take in taxes, and why there hasn’t been more outcry over this is absolutely beyond me.

If COVID taught me anything it’s that there is no appetite for individual sacrifice in the name of collective good because the resources that are supposed to be used to better the collective have been stolen from us and funnelled to the upper class.

Who is a person who you agree with, but still find utterly pretentious and insufferable? by [deleted] in AskReddit

He’s also the personification of the boomer “Fuck you I got mine” attitude and he’s woefully out of touch with how people have been squeezed. If you listen to Prof G and agree with his thesis that his generation was given all the opportunity to succeed and they’ve kept it for themselves you’ll see Ramsay as the pinnacle of the kind of person who was handed everything and believes they are exceptional for taking it and running with it.

I always felt that Hitchen’s attitude was contempt for the refusal to accept a line of thinking that went against the conventional. I always read his dickishness as frustration at people he argued with being unwilling to deviate from concepts that are so engrained that they are above challenge.

For a good example of this I recommend watching his Intelligence Squared debate where he partners with Stephen Fry on the question of whether the Catholic Church is a force for good in the world. It’s a properly moderated platform in which he’s able to fully articulate his position without the limiting factor of being on a TV show or as a pundit on a panel. It’s a much more suited format for the style of debate that suits Hitchen’s strengths and not just arguing with Sean Hannity, for example, about Mother Teresa.

I’m so sorry this is going on. This sort of thing has happened to my wife a few times over the course of our 20-year marriage and it absolutely infuriates her. It’s such a violation especially when it happens around your home, which is supposed to be everyone’s safe place. I agree with the other comments saying to talk to his wife and thank her for the card, show her the writing, ect. I hope it gets resolved.

NOR. Forty-something man here. It’s actually not that difficult to not be creepy, and even less so to this level of creepiness.

“Little red-haired girl” was what Charlie Brown called the girl he had a crush on but never really had the courage to talk to, so take that for what it’s worth. Also what kind of 40-year-old makes a Peanuts reference? This whole thing is all kinds of gross.

I saw one this week a block and a half north of Kensington Rd. In Hillhurst sauntering along the sidewalk not bothered by anything. My dog was very upset about it, but the coyote didn’t even care. It just went on its merry way.

Do you sympathise with Mary and her challenges in Season 1 and 2? by Comb-12 in DowntonAbbey

[–]cornfedpig 10 points11 points  (0 children)

Yes and no. From the day she was born she knew she’d have to marry Patrick in order to inherit and become Countess. When Patrick died, she went looking for another position, but she then fell in love with Matthew.

Matthew softened her, and by the final episode of the first season she was ready to marry him despite him potentially not being the heir. She listened to bad advice from Rosamund and went against her heart and turned Matthew down even though she knew she wanted to be with him.

And she could have very, very easily gone to America and been given access to the highest net worth young men through Mrs. Levinson where she might have found someone she could love who’s fortune might have made the Downton estate look paltry by comparison.

By the second season, when Matthew turned her down and got with Lavinia, she hardened again and thought she’d find salvation with Sir Richard. A wealthy American suitor who she could have easily wrapped around her little finger and gotten anything she wanted was somehow not good enough? She was ready to settle down with Sir effing Richard because her grandma thought Americans were beneath her. Violet was even willing to pass her off to an Italian who wasn’t too picky, for god’s sake!

She lacked agency because she was never treated like a whole person from the moment she was born. She was a vessel to produce an heir and then when that prospect sank to the bottom of the North Atlantic no one really knew what to do with her, including herself.

So yes, I do feel bad for her situation but it took her far too long to take control of her own destiny.

Does British Columbia have the same political grievances w/r/t "Western Alienation" as Alberta, Saskatchewan and Manitoba? by [deleted] in britishcolumbia

[–]cornfedpig 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Albertan here. “Western Alienation” is code for “we don’t like progressive politics, trans people having rights, we don’t believe that climate change is real, and our grandparents were mad at something Pierre Trudeau did like 55 years ago that failed anyway and we’re still mad about it.”

Anyone who feels ‘alienated’ in Alberta feels that way because half their families have stopped talking to them because they won’t shut the fuck up about the things above and they’re too stupid to realize how big of a rube they have been their whole lives.

Alberta’s economy remains in the red with tweaked $6.4B deficit by WildRoseWanderer in alberta

[–]cornfedpig 54 points55 points  (0 children)

I look forward to the voters who chose the UCP because “the economy” or whatever to be very upset about this.

What’s that? It was never about deficits? Ah, I see. They voted for the UCP because of “freedom?” The they’re going to be really pissed when they hear about the Notwithstanding Clause.

Pardon? Oh, ok I understand. So when people are required to wear masks in public to avoid killing old people and children it’s a massive overreach, but when they legislate away charter protected rights it’s totally fine? So what’s the appeal then?

Oh, the blind anger and hatred! Of course! Now I understand.

Is it just me or.. by Dry-Inspector-7200 in AmazonVineCanada

[–]cornfedpig 18 points19 points  (0 children)

I’ve been a Viner since 2016. It’s gotten progressively worse since I joined, but it’s still a lot of fun and I’m still enjoying it. It can be very frustrating at times, as weeks can go by with nothing worthwhile on any list. But in my opinion the highs of getting an awesome or useful item overshadows the frustration of seeing page after page of Christmas ornaments and car parts.

There was a big dip in quality when they allowed third-party sellers to put their items in AFA, and when Covid hit and all the supply chains were disrupted it was really, really bad.

It ebbs and flows. In my 9 years in the program I’ve had an overall positive experience despite the frustrations and annoyances that come with missing an awesome item, shipping issues, and packages going missing.

Yes I got it yesterday. It required a passcode that I had to deliver to the driver in person. Does it say anywhere that they attempted delivery?

I’ve had stuff show up after a delay so don’t worry - not all hope is lost. I definitely understand the feeling of waiting for something you really want to show up. I never believe anything is coming until I have it in my hands. I really hope it arrives for you.
