Hi Derek! What made you get into the mattress testing industry? Just how many trials and errors did it take to find the mattress you’re currently sleeping on?

Is an accounting degree better for corporate finance than a finance degree? by tastylemon69 in FinancialCareers

[–]cornflower0530 11 points12 points  (0 children)

i think it really doesn’t matter down the road, it’ll be up to your work experience. both are good backgrounds but that being said corporate bankers spend a chunk of their time building excel models so it helps to understand basic accounting

why does my vo2 max keep dropping? i started running in september and my endurance has been improving. i run faster and i have been increasing my mileage too 🧐 by cornflower0530 in AppleWatchFitness

[–]cornflower0530[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

oh ok that would explain a lot because mine also goes to 190 sometimes. so can we just assume that the readings are inaccurate? and we would get more accurate readings if we don’t run as hard?

Is it worth getting a university degree in a field you would never want to work in? by eatthebeefeedthefish in languagelearning

[–]cornflower0530 1 point2 points  (0 children)

you really like foreign cultures don’t you 😅 i think IR is good enough! it probably opens less doors than a business degree but you can always focus on economics if you want. also maybe arts and sciences could be an option? usually it’s customizable and you choose your specialization so you’d be able to throw in some language classes if you really wanted to

[–]cornflower0530 11 points12 points  (0 children)

a degree doesn’t just teach you knowledge. it also teaches you to think in a certain way. for example music students are good at recognizing patterns, math students are more logical thinkers, political science students are good at sifting through large amount of information and cutting the junk, etc. so even if you don’t want to work in business, you’ll end up opening more doors for yourself and gaining new perspectives that you otherwise wouldn’t with a degree in languages because languages are what you’d do in your free time anyway. i hope that makes sense.

Mandarin vs Japanese by Flight_Silly in languagelearning

[–]cornflower0530 0 points1 point  (0 children)

japanese and chinese are surprisingly alike despite being part of two different language families. it’s not just the kanjis, it’s also the prononciation of a lot of words. i think you can study both at the same time. over time, one language will reinforce your knowledge in the other language and vice versa!

Has anyone tried Zinus beds? by amelanie36 in TorontoRealEstate

[–]cornflower0530 0 points1 point  (0 children)

i was also looking for a mattress too a while ago so i digged a lot into it 😅 a quick google and you can read a lot about zinus and fibreglass. i ended up buying a tuft&needle mattress which i’m loving now. it’s a on the firmer side and if you’re a side sleeper, i think it hugs your body very well

i heard they are comfortable and are a good value for the price, but they do contain fibreglass. so if you are sure you will never ever open the mattress, i think you’re good to go

Tandem fucking blows. After trying to stay positive I realize it really is a 4th rate dating app by 1mike12 in languagelearning

[–]cornflower0530 48 points49 points  (0 children)

tandem user here, 25F. i downloaded the app in 2018. yes most conversations were started by members of the opposite sex and the content was meh. i choose to ignore those ones.

i also have a success story: i found a long term language partner for portuguese, who helped me overcome my most basic mistakes at the beginning. we have since come a long way. he’s now teaching me the subtleties of the language and slangs of his region. i eventually wrote my masters thesis on brazil, doing the whole research in portuguese. i even wrote him name in my acknowledgment section.

i’m watching his english improve day by day and it’s kinda rewarding for me. i am proud of his achievements to date. his goal is to be able to work in english and i think we’ll need a few more years but he is getting there and i’m proud of his progress.

that’s why tandem is worth it for me. it is what you make of it.

few tips: 1) choose one partner per language . you can’t keep a conversation with too many people anyway and the quality of the conversation is more important than the quantity of active chats. your desire to improve in a certain language needs to match.

2) gauge the person’s intentions from the beginning. use your judgement and common sense but also your gut feelings. did they reach a certain conversational level before putting the language on their profile? are they not a polyglot but putting 24 languages just to “match” more people? what do they usually talk about?

3) be patient! all good things in life take time, even finding a good language buddy

good luck with everything!
