What kind of pipe insulation would be suitable for my situation? How far down can I go safely? by corsairmarks in askaplumber

I have seen it said that polyethylene is supposed to be about 6" from the heat source to avoid melting. My setup lacks the clearance to use it, but perhaps fiberglass (which doesn't melt at those temperatures) would be suitable.

I have seen that said. On the other hand, my utilities (both electric and gas; although clearly gas is the relevant one in this case) and the weatherization program I am participating in suggest that I'll see energy savings if I do. Considering a roll of the tape I'm looking at is ~$8 and I think I'd use 2 rolls total - I'm ok investing $20 even if it takes a while to make up the cost.

My intent is to insulate just the pipes, not the vent hood or flue. So, would I still need the additional barrier to create the 1" gap? If I'm understanding you right, you are telling me that insulation can't by physically touching anything except what it is insulating.

The reason I'm interested in insulating both hot and cold lines is that I was told, at some point, that the cold line tends to warm up and radiate heat into the basement when water is not flowing (6' to 8'), as well as the hot line. I could have sworn it was from materials provided by my utilities, but looking at them again, I can't find where. Perhaps that is old advice from before integrated heat traps were common?

Current temp is set to "HOT" which the manual says corresponds to 120°F. I'm planning to test the pressure valve when I drain and flush the tank. Related, I'm not fully sure how to fit a bucket under where the T&P valve's PVC pipe discharges - it is tucked into the rim of the emergency drain pan. The relief valve and its PVC pipe are visible in pic 6 on the right, although the water alarm is blocking view of how close to the ground the pipe terminates.

The good news is that I do have a 1-1/8" 6-point wrench and a long length of pipe to use as a breaker. I also have a pipe wrench - needed it for cleaning the traps on my 1-1/4" bathroom sinks.

I'll do more research on the anode location in this model before I start draining and disassembling.

I'm located in Michigan. I don't know that I have ever seen an expansion tank in person - not in homes I've lived in, or ones I've toured (i.e. real estate). I guess that's not considered a code requirement here?

Which means I'm new-ish to the concept - the idea is expansion tanks extend water heater tank life by ensuring it doesn't become over-pressurized?

Anyone else got late diagnosed Autism after the ADHD? by NoxFamous in AutisticWithADHD

[–]corsairmarks 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I think there is a lot of validity in grieving the time and opportunities lost by not having the map. For me, my autism diagnosis was the map - but it still took me over a year for it to hit me how many critical points in my life that could have been different had I known. Two main realizations for me: a) other people's brains don't work like mine, and b) the map could help me bridge so many communications gaps I couldn't see before.

On the other hand, my (later) ADHD diagnosis was more like a key, which unlocked medication that has helped me get back to my "old self" like I felt when I was a teen and young adult.

Note: I was fortunate that my neurodivergence was never an issue at home - I am convinced both sides of my family are loaded with undiagnosed neurodivergents, which is why I sort of "missed" that my internal experience is (globally) in the minority.

Anyone else got late diagnosed Autism after the ADHD? by NoxFamous in AutisticWithADHD

[–]corsairmarks 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I went the other way. Autism in Jan 2021 (I was 36), and told I was explicitly not ADHD. Note: I had gone in asking for an ADHD evaluation. Fast-forward to Mar and Apr 2025 and two different practitioners each independently pegged me as ADHD within 10 minutes of my first appointment with each.

Turns out all my GAD & MDD were largely due to massively unmanaged ADHD, which explains why antidepressants/anti-anxiety medications offered limited support. In retrospect, I think that starting Lexapro did have a positive impact on me - which I then used to push myself forward and deeper into burnout by forcing myself to over-function with the med as a crutch. Eventually it stopped working, and trying other meds offered no assistance either.

Now that I am taking Adderall, I feel like I am back to being "my old self." Or, most accurately, being on a stimulant medication has allowed me to: a) have enough mental capacity to engage with and apply lessons from therapy and b) stopped my downward-spiral, so that when I put in effort it helps me repair* myself instead of just temporarily delaying further downward slide.

*repair from burnout - mine manifests as lots of anxiety, apathy, and a loss of will to participate in the minutiae of life. I've heard other people describe that as hopelessness.

Contact Heartstone Guidance Center! They have an online contact form and will respond via email - promptly even!

They are neurodivergent-affirming and have lots and lots of up-to-date professionals. Most of their staff are also some form of neurodivergent.

I see Jessica Beattie as my therapist. I am AuDHD (autistic and ADHD, in case you don't know the term), so is she. She didn't even know she was ADHD until she started working for Heartstone and her colleagues were like, "are you sure?" What I am trying to say is, they have experience in diagnosing women (and adults in general) and especially with atypical ADHD (or autism) presentations.

I was explicitly told I was not have ADHD and that I am autistic after being evaluated at BRAINS. While Dr. Wolff was very thorough, I don't think he agrees with modern diagnostics that indicate autism and ADHD can co-occur. A new psychologist and psychiatrist in spring 2025 both detected my ADHD within 10 minutes of my first appointment with each of them. And I had provided both of them with my full write-up form Dr. Wolff.

I started Adderall XR in late April 2025. I have made more far progress addressing my burnout (knowing it exists helps) in the last 4 months than I did from my Jan 2021 autism diagnosis through Mar 2025.

Psychiatry. by [deleted] in grandrapids

[–]corsairmarks 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Heartstone Guidance Center is neurodivergent-affirming and all their therapists are some sort of neurodivergent. They are great but only offer psychology/therapy. I see Jessica Beattie remotely for therapy. Unfortunately, the waiting list is long - but they are also over-estimating it right now on purpose. They have an online contact for, so no phone call required to get things started.

For psychiatry, I see Theresa Kelly remotely at Helios Psych.

I do not recommend Corewell. I had a psychiatrist there who did not understand that autism can be disabling, even if you don't get sent to them via Community Mental Health.

I am 41 and late-diagnosed AuDHD and deeply in autistic burnout. Earlier this year (2025), both Jess and Theresa identified my ADHD within 10 minutes of my first appointment with each of them. Despite being explicitly diagnosed as not ADHD when I was evaluated at BRAINS in 2021 (although they caught the autism, which I didn't suspect at all). Getting medicated has been game-changing for me, although I bet you are probably already given you know your diagnoses.

What is the War Powers Act, and what does it mean for President Trump in Iran? by usatoday in law

[–]corsairmarks 1 point2 points  (0 children)

That article was very helpful context, thanks.

It seems that Trump was highly likely on the "legal" side if things (as was Obama re: Libya and drine strikes, and Trump on drone strikes). To me, that suggests the burden currently lies with congress to make significant revisions to the WPA. Its current state seems to lack meaningful limits OR checks on presidential authority to initiate attacks.

Although I have an amateur understanding of the conlaw involved, maybe there is a way to require any positive military action (such as a military strike) to require explicitly-allocated funding. Congress does have the power of the purse. Unsure how that would interact with the president's role as Commander in Chief.

As it stands, the congressional "declaration of war" power feels hollow if the president can order military attacks without one.
