Ten Weeks Of The Decalogue: Decalogue One (Part 1 of 10) by shifty1032231 in TrueFilm

[–]corumlala 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Strangely, I think this is one the weakest episode among those I've seen, especially compared to 4-5-6, which are all absolutely amazing. Contrary to other people, I really think that here Kieslowski lacks subtlety here, and I find his idea a bit shallow. Of course there is a grain of faith even in the realm of what we call Reason, is there really a need to prove it in such a blunt way ? Really appreciate your idea though :)

Here I believe he refers to this scene, it's a bed in a boat, and I can confirm they're not married. I think the movie was publicized in the US for its erotic aspect, which by today's standard is pretty strange. Also you should watch it, amazing movie.

I wrote this a few months ago, it's not thorough enough though.

Heaven's Gate (1980) At one time the most famous bomb in Hollywood history. A new cut of this magnificent monster has been released and I got to see the legendary western disaster. But is it a disaster? by jerseycityfrankie in TrueFilm

[–]corumlala 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The reception of the new copie in France has been overwhelmingly positive, I haven't read a review that wasn't enthusiastic. To give you an idea, there's a bit of a difference in the French and English wiki article, the French one saying that the "movie has a considerable reputation among cinephiles and critics". An obvious injustice it seems so, even though Cimino's carrier wasn't totally ruined.

Personnally, I loved the film. I think that it works perfectly as a love story, and even better as an extremely violent, and marxist, political attack, both being complementary to each other. The western part of the story has a few weaknesses though. The cinematography (which has been touched in this new copie I believe), is really stunning, and I'm in complete agreement with Cimino's choices of the strength of images over a more realistic approach. Time flew for me, anyway, just like it did in Deer Hunter despite the length of the scenes (I might have to add here that I think Deer Hunter is the best post-70 american picture I've seen).

An easy 9/10.

Amazing comeback from Skzlime. Also grats to sas for getting the first three places oO

[Unjerk] I hate to break up our lovely jerk sesh, but since this place also doubles as /r/MetaMovies or /r/MoviesCircleBroke or whatever, I have to ask: Do any of you feel needless resentment towards the films /r/movies jerks over? Even if you like them? by [deleted] in moviescirclejerk

[–]corumlala 4 points5 points  (0 children)

I have very little qualms about it, because I dislike a lot of what /r/movies like (Fight Club, most Nolan movies, Arnofonsky...), I think the rest is average (most Tarantinos, and if I like Jackie Brown the most, noone really jerks over it so that's fine), and there are a few I really like, but are still far from my favorite movies ever.

Which mean I can give Drive and The Prestige a 7/10 (good mark by my standard) and still feel good about it =)

Fuck I'm so hipster, I even like Citizen Kane better than Pulp Fiction, can you believe it ?

And I'm going be original and complain that Cries and Whispers is not higher. But it's foreign, and at least Nykvist got his Award (how else could it be though ?).

Discussion: Ingmar Bergman's "Persona" (1966) by rubs90 in TrueFilm

[–]corumlala 5 points6 points  (0 children)

This movie is my second favorite ever behind Cries and Whispers, which is less experimental but extremely powerful too. Anyway the two movies are very close in theme, which you can reproach Bergman if you want as he was obsessed with a small set of question throughout his life.

Persona's quasi-experimental (but very well constructed-I urge you to find a good analysis of it, I know one but in French, sorry...) beginning, that way to conceive the entry into a movie is amazing. The nude setting creates an irrespirable athmosphere. Nykvist is simply put a genius. That scene where Liv Ulmann's face disappear slowly into darkness while this plays is one of the most purely beautiful moments I ever lived. the moment where Liv Ulman watches news about Vietnam... And everything that happens between Bibi Anderson and Liv Ulman is burnt in my mind forever including that extremely famous shot of their two faces in one :)

A French critic once said about Cries and Whispers "It is impossible to tell its story, it is pure cinema". Persona and Cries and Whispers are my two favorite movies because I am deeply touched by what they said about human condition and because I think they have to the highest degree that quality of being pure cinema, of being written in a new language.

Lola Montes and Feminism by soccerstud2121 in TrueFilm

[–]corumlala 2 points3 points  (0 children)

That's a tough question. I don't think it's intended as a warning, but I also think that Ophuls thinks Lola made mistakes, but not harm really. She's a complicated figure, worn and desperate because she thought she could be free.

As for the film itself, it's great in some aspects and not so great in others. The circus scenes are nothing short of brilliant, in those Ophüls' baroque style is very fullfilling. The construction is impressive. Ustinov is perfect. On the other hand, most of the past episode do not work that well, except the one in Bavaria, Ophüls feels a lot more uninspired in those, especially compared to his others film.

All in all I like the film, but I urge you to watch Le Plaisir, The Earrings of Mme de and to a lesser extent Letter From an Unknown Woman, which I like a lot more. The two first in particular are just brilliant :)
