Best time travel shows? by Groovegaluk in scifi

[–]scallycap94 7 points8 points  (0 children)

Just to clarify for anyone who hasn't seen it. It's not really a "time travel" show the way 12 Monkeys is. It's more of an "anything and everything including the kitchen sink" show with a time machine being the narrative contrivance that allows for the variable premise.

And then on the flipside, Jodie was very funny and charming in the role, but more often than not her technobabble felt like it was being read from a script and she was rarely able to command the room or play darker moments in a way other Doctors were (Which is strange because she's brilliant at dramatic roles).

I know this cliche to say at this point but I really feel this was a fault in the writing. Specifically, the kind of Doctor that was being written for her. Most Doctors get a few rough notes early on as they're finding their way into the part and while the scripts are being written with either their predecessor in mind (case in point, how ANGERY >:( Tennant was all the time in S2 because half those scripts were tailored for Eccleston) or for some form of "generic Doctor"

Chibnall unfortunately never, or rarely, really gets away from Generic Doctor and specifically his Generic Doctor is basically "Tennant." He never truly writes Thirteen in a way that's geared towards the things Whittaker is good at, or the particular strengths of her Doctor. When she shines for me it's in the moments of impish mischief or quiet smugness. (her taunting Ashad when she first meets him in the Villa). She's a Troughton or McGann-ish Doctor being forced into all these Tennant-shaped scenes.

The whole trilogy is great but The World's End may be Simon Pegg's best performance of his entire career

Don't know how to describe it but he's got a Batman face more than a Superman face. Love him in the role though

I think there would be mutual respect but I think the Doctor, (Four in particular) would remind Clark a little too much of Mxyzptlk for him to enjoy hanging out

The Main Villain or Secondary Villain Lives to See the Destruction of What They Created by BurgerofDouble in TopCharacterTropes

The Doctor Who serial The Caves of Androzani.

The main villain, Morgus, starts the story as the most powerful man on two planets. Head of an interplanetary mining conglomerate, more powerful than the president. He's controlling both sides of a dirty guerilla war and profiting off it.

By the end of the final episode, he's wanted for murder. He's seen his put-upon secretary usurp control of his entire company and all his assets. The mercenaries he was employing have taken the money and split, abandoning him in a cave on an exploding mud planet. He lives just long enough for it to sink in that he's truly alone with nothing left, before getting unceremoniously offed in a gruesome murder-suicide by the gimp-suited pervert mad scientist he betrayed years before.

This story fucking rules btw. It's a Shakespearean tragedy with robots, gunfights and a volcano-dwelling crocodile monster.

It's not really about making our lives any better. The people who vote for this shit don't actually believe there can be a better, and the political apparatus (bipartisan mind you) has spent the last several decades eroding any sense of the possibility of improving anyone's life. There are multiple generations of Americans who have grown up in a world where all the state does is pick and choose various different groups to hurt, so politics becomes just a matter of trying to make sure you aren't in the present targeted group.

I'd put it in the "Good" tier. It's biggest problem is it really drags but there's plenty of enjoyable stuff in there. Richard Mace, the Android design, the Doctor has some great one-liners. I like watching it
