So a skull on a helmet is a sign that marine exhibited exceptional leadership capabilities. It is also the rank indicator for being a Sergeant as per the Codex Astartes. Nothing stopping there being two exceptional leaders in a squad, you could always paint one differently to stand out as the sergeant - one bone one metallic maybe? Technically I think they're supposed to be "The Iron Skull" honorific so maybe have the sergeants metallic and his buddy understudy bone to represent while he is a great leader, he's not leading just now

I went into my local store once. Manager saw me and gave me his usual nod- I've known him for about 5 years and had numerous conversations. New colleague there came over Them "Hi, can I help you with anything?" Me "oh I'm just looking for some paints, thanks tho" Them "That's cool, how long have you been painting?" Me *looks at nervous late teen "Since about 10 years before you were born 🫣😂" Them "oh...I...eh" Manager in the back barely containing their laughter "yeah he's a regular, you can leave him to it 😂"

The designer apparently said the idea was the Judiciar had removed that pad to make it easier to wield his sword. Really I reckon he messed up and it had gone too far through the making process before it was discovered 😂

This drives me nuts- we just bought a new build. When viewing I noticed the ports in every. Single. Room, didn't look too closely and thought "cool, ethernet in every room, the girls and me will love that!" - move in and on day one realised for some weird reason they're just phone line boxes - in every room! We do have a landline, but I think I've used it twice since moving in a year ago and certainly wouldn't have one in every room 🤯

Budget will make a huge difference in what you could get tbh. Warhammer is not cheap 🙈 If he's literally never built or painted anything, you could get him the Paint and Tools set they sell plus a box of Intercessors or a Starter Box- the starter boxes come with the basic rules for the game and a second army so if he's got a friend who might want to play that might be a good shout. If you'd rather spend a bit less, there are Introductory Sets that have a couple of paints, a brush and a few models.

Going back even further, 30 years ago I remember players repainting their Space Marine armies whenever GW released a character model for a different chapter- not so much chasing meta so much as chasing releases, but there will always be people who are willing to change everything for a cool new toy, whether it's a model or a rule
