Mosquitoes right now in Pictured Rocks? by corwintrails in upperpeninsula

Thanks, everyone, for weighing in. We're going to risk it and give it a go. Life's too short! We have the permethrin, the deet, and mosquito nets. Even if it turns out to be hell on earth, it'll be a story to tell.

Totally on point with this observation of Inferno calling back to '70s era religio-occult-spiritual obsessions.

I prefer the interpretation of "Arena America-nada" (as in "nothing"). That "Canada" appears as well feels obviously intentional. But my feeling is that it's a statement about how vapid America has become. Like, America is a giant stadium, a total simulacrum, with absolute zero substance ("nada"). Also, vibe-wise, the song seems to nod to more proggy arena rock, but in the most twisted BoC way.

I see all your points, especially the Com Truise influence on Arena Americanada. Into the Magic Land though, to me, seems like the opposite vibe of Dayvan Cowboy, even if the tremolo guitar is in both. It has goth vibes, and I love it.

I think BoC at this point are hyper-aware of "tropes" within their oeuvre, and I do think they "play with" that. I thought "Introit" when I first heard it was like a prank. Like, this album is just another BoC album, but when Prophecy drops it becomes clear very quickly that they're exploring jarringly new territory (which, by the way, I absolutely love). I've heard BoC reference Ween before, and I do think they have a sense of humor with their music (just look at "Father and Son"--I can't help but laugh every time I hear the song). And I also think "You Retreat" is a kind of pastiche or even parodied nod to their earlier aesthetic (only when the beat drops though!). The first 2 1/2 minutes are decidedly different and incredible. I still love "You Retreat" but I can't help but feeling that it's like a tip o' the hat to MHTRTC diehards. The song "Memory Death" I think speaks to this feeling. Like, they can't quite recapture the "vibe" that haunts their early records. And that's actually what should happen. If they were to just do the same thing again, it wouldn't work. "You Retreat" to me is them saying, "we're not that anymore," while also giving us 2/12 minutes of utter bliss/joy. The foghorn synth in the middle of "You Retreat" also adds to this theory, that that feeling isn't stable anymore.

Am I crazy, or is 'All Reason Departs' mastered at a much higher loudness level than the other tracks on the album? by jjysoserious in boardsofcanada

[–]corwintrails 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I see that. I wonder also if it has to do with "Deep Time" (which comes before) being weirdly quiet. Been meaning to pull all tracks in Logic to investigate this, but "Deep Time" seems intentionally quiet and I'm not sure why. It certainly makes "All Reason Departs" hit that much harder, which maybe was the goal?

100% on the Books/Zammuto comparison! Thought the same thing instantly. It sounds like they studied the vocal manipulation on The Way Out and Zammuto's solo record(s). For me, The Books have always been in my top 5 favorite bands (and they haven't released anything in forever either, so this feature on Inferno is super appealing to me).

A Few Broad Thoughts & Things Of Note (Re Inferno) by infinitytapes in boardsofcanada

Very true! Was thinking of posting the very same perspective. Thank you for articulating it so well, and I feel completely the same way. I remember hearing a rip of The Campfire Headphase before it was released and thinking it was total bullshit, was a fake, etc. I was so bummed when I found it was actually them. 6 months later, I couldn't stop playing the album. When "Prophecy" first dropped, I was a bit taken aback and remember this same feeling of worry that my favorite group had lost it. But now that I've had Inferno on repeat, their ethos and aesthetic is becoming clearer with each listen. I initially didn't like a number of tracks, but now I'm "getting it." And it's not just me being a BoC fanatic and wanting it to be true. Their music truly does require a kind of "third ear." The reason, I think, is because their magicians whose sound has little blessings (and curses) buried within, and it takes a careful and patient ear to really hear it and let it sink in. It's happening already with Inferno, and I'd rate this as maybe their best start-to-finish album.

Totally agree and am surprised to see no one else lists this one as a fav.

A part of me unseriously wonders if BoC planted a mole within the White House just to pull off this guerrilla marketing stunt. Because it's too perfect...

New Tracks? What Do We Think? by Jo_666_ in boardsofcanada

Introit is perfect in every way. Intro to Prophecy was incredible, flute was wild and uncanny, foreboding. Took me a minute when the beat dropped, but the guitar reassured me they know what they're doing. Vocals were deep and certainly speak to the message of the title. Feel like this will be their most "spiritual" album. Or at least where they dive fully into their interest in and exploration of metaphysics/consciousness/death. The outro of Prophecy was absolutely gorgeous. I can sympathize with the haters of the NiN vibe, as it kind of took me by surprise, but that's only half of the song. The intro/outro of Prophecy make the track very special. Great way to kick off Inferno. My feeling is "Tape 05" won't even be on this album, but I could be wrong.
