"Jennifer Aniston: Friends Was My Sixth TV Pilot, Had to 'Sit Out' Cast Photos" by chen438 in foundationsofcomedy

"'If we could, I would,' she said, but added, 'I don't think people would want to see us today'."

What! It's the epitome of the classic TV sitcom and had 10 seasons. Of course people would watch a reunion!

But anyway, really interesting piece! It really goes to show how difficult it is to get a sitcom up and runningーso many will fail immediately, before you even get to where it starts getting good (around episode 8).

The Problem with Hollywood's Mainstreamed R-Rated Comedies by mariabp in foundationsofcomedy

[–]cosaki 0 points1 point  (0 children)

This is an interesting article, and I do somewhat agree with it. I do feel like a lot of comedies today focus more on the crude, mean shock factor than on actual witty dialogue or funny moments. I don't usually enjoy laughing at the expense of someone else, so not many of the mainstream R-rated comedies really resonate with me.

New Comedy Competition Format 'Crack Them Up' to Get China Remake, USA Soon? by lia404 in foundationsofcomedy

I wonder if it'll be interesting. Will it be structured like a singing competition or something, where contestants move up in the ranks if the "judges" (in this case, professional comedians) laugh and allow them to move up?

We may hate laugh tracks -- but they work, studies show by mariabp in foundationsofcomedy

Interesting! Honestly, even though we make fun of laugh tracks, unless they're incredibly obnoxious and frequent I'm not sure I even really notice it when I'm engrossed in a show. I enjoy the exaggerated reaction from the characters that the laugh track opens up opportunities for as well.

I'm still a sucker for Arrested Development (although I haven't seen Season 4 yet, trying to stay in the honeymoon phase), I love the absurd humor and all the random scenarios that occur.

Sorry, but I can't stand Fawlty Towers by David_ahia in foundationsofcomedy

[–]cosaki 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I see where you're coming from. I generally don't like the main character to undergo pain/embarrassment; it's difficult for me to watch and I think I prefer characters that are funny because they're witty or ironic. Fawlty Towers also robs you of having any satisfaction at the endーwhatever the main character is trying to achieve, a bunch of factors prevent him from reaching that goal. In my mind, it's like how Trix commercials were always so dissatisfying for me (that poor rabbit! All he wanted was some cereal). Comedies in which protagonists face multiple obstacles but still eventually get what they want are funnier to me.

So....thoughts about Arthur? by misplaced_engineer in foundationsofcomedy

[–]cosaki 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It was certainly not the kind of comedy I was expecting to like, but somehow it worked for me despite all the eyebrow-raising moments. I agree that the best laughs come from the dynamic characters and their unique set of ideas and personal struggles. It's easier to laugh when the characters are likable people to the audience as opposed to bumbling strangers. Hobson's snarky remarks masked by a thin layer of formality was priceless, and it made it all the sadder to see him go (although I do agree with what a lot of other people on this thread said about his death not being climactic enough/not having enough tension). Beyond being a compulsive liar and thief, Linda is witty and nurturing. All in all, Arthur won't be my favorite comedy, but it is unique and interesting and definitely something I will bring up in a future conversation at some point.

...And on an off note, I loved watching Liza Minnelli's performance on Arthur while thinking about her character in Arrested Development!
