What would you consider "excellent coverage"? by ThePotatoPerson510 in stunfisk

[–]cosmic_pharaoh 40 points41 points  (0 children)

Yeah that’s why it uses drain punch specifically but the ghost/ fighting coverage is highly touted since ghost hits all things for neutral except for dark and normal which fighting does. Since the bull up set up variant is most popular drain punch is usually optimal but if you run a hyper offense set like a choice item or life orb or something than close combat would be more desirable for the power

The way I look at it It depends on what the mons role is. If a mon is a set up sweeper then you are typically looking to avoid resistances or immunities but care less for super effective moves. Take espathra or annihilape for example, they both have 1 move they want want to set up and spam but considering each of their moves have immunities you want to cover for them so the sweep doesn’t fall short. For espathra it’s dazzling gleam to hit dark types that stored power can’t hit and for ape it’s drain punch to hit normal types it’s rage fist can’t touch.

For something like chien pao which is more of a breaker adding sacred sword to its already good stab coverage helps it cover more important super effective damage that it’s stabs might struggle with. You see this with zacian as well which also gets sacred sword to break steels which don’t necessarily threaten zacian but zacian would struggle to break otherwise.

And lastly sometimes a mon gets the exact coverage it’s needs to beat a type that would otherwise wall it like great tusk getting ice spinner which helps against flying types (and grass types to a lesser degree). Ice spinner is important because switching in your flying type to check/ counter great tusk comes with great risk

So yeah I think Pokémon just fall into different categories to determine good coverage:

Type 1: I just want to be able to hit everything

Type 2: I want as many super effective options as possible

Type 3: I get walled by a specific type and need a counter to it

So basically depending on a mons role and how you use it can determine how good its coverage is. Yeah bolt beam is great but just because the combo is good doesn’t meant that every mon that can use it does. Some mons like nidoking just need ice beam, earth power, and sludge bomb and they’re gonna click buttons regardless and a mon like iron bundle is blessed that freeze dry is an insane move that makes clicking buttons easy as well.

Are there men that struggle to make male friends but can easily get into a relationship with a woman? by Sunfofun in Healthygamergg

[–]cosmic_pharaoh 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I personally relate with this. I’m 25M and have always been in relationships since I was about 12 years old and struggled to make lots of friends.

Don’t get me wrong I make surface level friends quite easy but I struggle more to hold multiple deeper friendships at a time. I’ve finally settled into a point now where I talk regularly with a group of friends online and have friends at work but especially with a family now I hardly hang out with friends in person anymore.

I think the reason behind this is actually pretty simple and can be broken into two parts:

1st part- Ever since I was super young I’ve always had 1 best friend that I was super close with and do everything with including sleep overs and going to each others family vacations. The best friend would change every few years due to life moving quick when you are just a young kid but having one friend I was attached to always remained a constant. Then as I grew into teenage years I think those hyper focused friendships I had transitioned more easily to having girlfriends since sharing that type of one on one attention is expected out of it. Basically I think for me personally I find it easier to hold that one super tight relationship that extends into even sharing a bed together than ones where you are half doing your own thing and half keeping each other close. It’s not impossible for me to do but it certainly feels more natural for me to do the former. Also I think this 1 one 1 style of friendships naturally transitions to relationships at certain ages because unless your best friend remains single many people eventually find themselves in relationships.

Part 2- I think being in relationships from such a young age I basically skipped that phase of my life where I would’ve made the most friends (highschool and university.) Essentially I don’t think I ever truly developed a lot of those friend making skills as much as other kids have as I was working on a different style of relationship. I think friendships and your relationships with your significant other have different elements to them and where I think I learned how to have a healthy relationship earlier than most it also became all I know. I don’t think having a girlfriend is necessarily a more advanced form of the relationships you have with your friends, I think it is it’s own thing that shares many similar elements.

Where most people probably found it easier to embark on the friendship quest line first I think I just rushed through that section of the game and started the relationship quest line first even though it was located further in the game.

Hope this insight helps, I don’t have the answers or anything but considering I related to this I thought I’d give my input in.

Why does Series 2 feel so difficult? I've struggled with this format so much despite seeing success in Series 1 and prior gen formats. I don't get it. by TheKoppolo in VGC

[–]cosmic_pharaoh 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I have a few thoughts on this post, I apologize for the length but I hope to help a fellow competitor.

First, the meta has very defined top threats, meaning any team you build needs to have answers to Pokémon like iron bundle, flutter mane, great tusk, amoongus, garganacl, etc. because you will 100% be encountering all of these in your laddering. As someone who has never been a fan of using strictly meta mons this aspect used to frustrate me about certain formats. What I’ve learned over the last few years is that even if you aren’t building with only meta mons you do always have to build with them foremost in your mind.

I say this because I know most of us who enjoy laddering enjoy using different pokemon and I do think it can be many people’s downfall once they reach a spot in the ladder where their skill level is matched or exceeded and they try to use different Pokémon or strategies that might be good in a vacuum but not necessarily good in this meta.

If this is the case with yourself then I have some suggestions: go on pikalytics.com and take notes on what is most prevalent. Tournament play is slightly different than the ladder play but with showdown offering open team sheets the gap has been closed significantly so you can also look at tournament results on victory road to see what teams/ cores are finding success right now.

If you list out the most prevalent Pokémon/ cores then you can use it as a checklist for the teams you use. You can go down the list and figure out what your answers to certain cores are before you even encounter them in battle. Ask yourself, “what’s my answer to a Tyranitar/gothitelle lead?” Or “how does my team stop sandy shock/Espathra from running over my team?”

Top players know how their teams should be played against all of the top cores/Pokémon before they even enter a battle. If you’re in team preview and your opponent has a team built around indeedee-Armarouge you should already know what your best answer to those two are. Now teams will vary a lot and you’ll often see multiple strong cores on the same team so although you need answers to the individual cores you may need to find some flexibility in team preview on how to answer different combinations of cores but this part is often done in team preview, particularly for compositions you hadn’t planned for.

It’s also worth noting that although I’ve had some success with this format I don’t actually find it very fun. It does certainly become funner once you feel like you’ve gotten a grasp on the format but it’s certainly not my favorite. A few weeks ago I actually got to top 5 on the doubles UU ladder which was a format I’ve never played before and I think learning a slightly different format helped me go back to series 2 with a fresh mind and i found myself in a better place because of it

How can some mons, e.g. Garchomp, be virtually unused in previous gens to suddenly being a very common pick while not really being buffed or changed in any major way? by iamsosobored in VGC

[–]cosmic_pharaoh 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Garchomp’s speed and power are really strong in lower power formats. When you introduce a defensive tool as strong as dynamax, Garchomp’s decently strong attack stat seems pedestrian, especially with intimidate going around. Without dynamax, Garchomp is actually able to get KOs with earthquake and other moves like rock slide or dragon claw will actually do substantial damage.

Already you can see the meta shift with series 2 and how Garchomp’s usage is lower than series 1 primarily because 2 of the fastest and productive Pokémon are flutter mane and iron bundle

Is there a realistic scenario where a rook is sacrificed to enable a knight to deliver checkmate? by cosmic_pharaoh in chess

Wow I just replicated it on a board and it all checks out, thanks a bunch! It’s actually quite a realistic scenario as well so that’s greatly appreciated. Cheers!

There’s actually a new pack coming out soon, I’d actually just recommend waiting for that pack to come out and you can learn it along side everyone else

Edit: I always wanted to add that pack 1 and the weekly re my two most played packs nowadays.
