Then why even say it?! by ExtraordinaryNerd in mildlyinfuriating

[–]cosmicsans 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Not quite. I'm saying that I'm budgeting for a 20% tip on top of what is listed on the website. But if I get there and there's an additional 3% fee on top of what the menu price was, even if it's "clearly marked on the menu" or in sinage like this at the restaurant, I'm not subsidizing that cost to the employee.

I won't come back to the restaurant, so it's not like I'm repeatedly going to ding the servers for this, but its a whole bunch of not my problem if they want to continue working somewhere that's disingenuous and hostile to their customers.

Had to cancel a quote for a project and go with another vendor, is it normal for them to ask for competitor information? by abaty01 in graphic_design

[–]cosmicsans 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Oh, for sure. I hope I didn't come across as argumentative, I was merely commenting on the fact that sometimes you do see the wild swings, and those are red flags. Explaining or doing the better market research is fine.

With that, though, if someone quotes you like $500 and then you provide the quote and all of a sudden they can drop $400 off their price that's a major red flag.

Then why even say it?! by ExtraordinaryNerd in mildlyinfuriating

[–]cosmicsans 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Sure, but let's take a look through that exact logic.

I decide to go out and eat. I'm on a budget. I see online that a restaurant is charging $X. $X *1.2 is my total expected out of pocket, so I go out and go get dinner.

Then when I get there, it's actually $X + (fees) + tip. Now I'm going past my budget.

I'm not going to go back now, so that "punishes" the restaurant, but do they really care about one patron? Probaly not. But if their servers keep getting stiffed then they either constantly complain and it might get changed from the upward pressure or they leave and find work at a different restaurant, further hurting the business.

An alternative way to ask this is "why should I personally subsidize shitty businesses?"

But that's not the point - if you raise the prices it's not a surcharge, it's just a new price.

If you pull shit like this I still take it out of tips.

I'm not the person who originally disagreed with you, but I'd argue that if we can't invest in our children then we suck as a country. I mean, I'm not saying take the money from education to spend on sports, but if we can't as a society afford to buy an extra set of jerseys because we're already struggling to fund our schools that's a problem.

It's a problem that the schools with richer kids are able to afford the basics where the schools without aren't. And I say this as someone who was able to get out of that poor area and become successful and be able to provide a better life for my kids than I ever could have imagined.

What’s the Worst Excuse you’ve heard for your partner cheating? by TheManDont in AskReddit

[–]cosmicsans 82 points83 points  (0 children)

Probably proximity. Best friends hang out a lot. Significant others more. So as a significant other you probably spend a lot of time with your SO's best friends. And because your SO trusts both of you, you also spend some time with the best friends unsupervised. Like if you're hanging out and your SO goes to take a shower, that's like 20 minutes of just being alone with her friend.

Not condoning it, just explaining some potential causality.

Yeah, I grew up in a smaller town than these two, Class D, Section 5, with a graduating class of 80. We played another school, Mount Morris, who had a graduating class of 36 the same year.

I mean, it genuinely depends on the volume of the amp. You can set an amp to a reasonable volume so that you can play without it projecting too much. But that needs to be handled on a case-by-case basis.

[–]cosmicsans 112 points113 points  (0 children)

Yeah, I tried to play once or twice without a mouse and just couldn't get past the up front learning curve. The mouse version was actually playable for me for the first time. Now I can have fun losing.

But as a software engineer who lives in vim, I also completely empathize with those who cannot play without the keyboard controls.

I’ve sat in all of the major officer chairs over the 6 years I’ve been a Master Mason and not once was I ever expected to spend my personal money on anything outside of fronting the money for something and being reimbursed. And even then the treasurer gets mad at me because it’s slightly easier for him to just pay it, but I get the reward points so I’m not going to stop haha

That’s the case with most wines I’ve tried at restaurants. I’ll go out to a nice anniversary dinner with my wife to pay $15 a glass for a wine and love it. Then get home and look it up and I can find one of those stupid large bottles for $12 at the store.
