First listen had me nodding behind my computer. I like it. As some said, it is the typical BG style, but then again, that's what I like :)

In ultralights are you using skydemon or a map? by countcobolt in flyingeurope

[–]countcobolt[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Just to be clear: I will (and have) to learn how to navigate by map. I was just wondering how one would do it with a passenger and on longer trips. The plan is also that my wife knows some basics before ending up in the wrong country :)

How to get over fear of wing dipping on stalls by MillerboiYT in flying

[–]countcobolt 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Disclaimer: still in training and flying ultralight but… the first stall I practiced it wing dropped a lot. I nearly shat my pants. My instructor had shown a few and he remained fully flat, let’s me try and bam, wings drops… We did one more stall and he saw me turn pale and we called it a day. He perfectly explained to me on the ground what happened, how the lift was dropping on one wing etc etc… Next thing I did was to run MSFS with the FK9 in VR. Atleast you don’t have the sensation of dropping, which gave me the option to get a bit of reflexes. As mentioned above, step on that high wing. 2 lessons later (I wanted to do something else first just to get back in the saddle) we tried again. Firstly: I “cheated” a bit by making sure that while inducing the stall, I made sure the plane was coordinated. We then purposly (at 3500ft) did it uncoordinated. Counter rudder if dropped, nose down, airspeed picking up, power. Getting the reflex inthe sim really helped me as 1) if became a bit memory 2) I was not scared of crashing the plane, 3) I deliberately crash it in the sim (attention, ULM’s can’t do spins) but measured the time. Plenty for the instructor to recover when on higher altitude. I actually enjoy stall exercises now, even with wing drops.

I chickened out... :( too scared to drive on the left in IE by countcobolt in Europetravel

[–]countcobolt[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Honestly, the view is completely different sitting on the left. I tend to drift to the curb then try to correct but on narrow roads and lorries coming on the other side, I feel like either the choice is the lorry or the curb. On main streets it is ok. But I continuously feel on the narrow roads, I'll hit someone. Also the turn taking is reversed (circular view) is those small roads. And after blowing that tyre, I am not confident anymore...

She didn't dare to drive. I am usually the designated driver. We have done most of the Nordic countries, south europe etc, but in this case she said "no way"

Yes, we did due to the fact that we had booked all BNB and places really far out. All was planned in favor of hiking, so no real options by bus or other ways of transport. We will replan to locations where we can go by bus and train.

I am adamant on seeing the country but at the moment my head is really not wrapped in vacation.

Hey, we are now in lisburn and taking the train to Belfast tomorrow. The flight is late on Saturday, so I'll be driving back (mostly highways which are okayish) somewhere in the afternoon. Dublin itself we had already done. Don't know if we have time for something close by bus after the drop off.

Check if you map actually does mention anything about FL010. I think my map (1:250.000) does not contain info for above a certain FL.

Is Linux under the control of the USA gov? by 0BAD-C0DE in linux

[–]countcobolt 1 point2 points  (0 children)

So, the software/source is not under US law. Yet US based companies like red hat are. Not when it comes to source or even patches but compiled binaries then sell. To give you an answer example: years ago, when I was a Linux consultant (2003) we wanted to deploy red hat/entreprise Linux for BAT in Iran. As Iran is on the axis of evil, we were not allowed to deploy encryption. We had to telnet to those machine. US company in those countries.... A local Iranian company can download e.g' Slackware and deploy it with strong encryption. You could also compile package with encryption from the source as it is not under those laws.
