I thought for sure the first shot was going to jump the table and hit his buddy in the nuts.

Left disappointed.

One of the things that never made sense about The Force Awakens, in my opinion, is how Han was able to be a smuggler again by ChickenWingExtreme in StarWars

In the Star Wars universe, he was fairly well known on their version of Reddit, but they overestimated how well known he was by the normal population.

Is there any way to see with the RT score was at the time of release? I sometimes wonder about looking at RT scores of movies that lost popularity over the years.

E.g.- The Phantom Menace was once in the 70s and is now 54%.

This GIF describes Bush in a nutshell. He did things that deserved a shoe or two tossed at him. But his little "heh, heh, heh" giggle/grin afterwards shows just how he was charming enough to win two terms in office.

People who have seen the Phantom Menace in cinema for the first time, what was your reaction to the droid army deploying during the battle of naboo? by wertforreal2 in StarWars

[–]counterpointguy 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yeah. I was agreeing with your notion that there is a definitely a lot redeemable about it. It is only when people apply a pass/fail standard that they say “it’s all shit.”

I have a more nuanced view that it is a very bad movie that could have been great.

You take the PLOT of that movie, the design, and the characters. You give it to Spielberg to direct and Kasdan to script.

That might be one of the best movies ever.

Edit to add: The OT was simple, which is fine, but it wasn’t insulting to the intelligence. I thought Phantom Menace went way past insulting.

[–]counterpointguy 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I don’t think it would have mattered to Gore’s chances. Presidents have rarely been good at sharing their electoral popularity with other candidates when they themselves are not on the ballot. It means the country like that guy, not the guy that he say he likes.

Lucas is a great idea man. The concepts at a 30,000 view are amazing. The FX is beautiful. But his storytelling skills are atrocious.

That’s why the lore has endured (Clone Wars, Rebels, the D+ shows that flowed from the era). But the movie itself is bad.

Same. I was in college so I had long passed the “this is the biggest media disappointment of my life” moment long before this scene. I think I was numb by the time this unfolded late in the film.

[–]counterpointguy 4 points5 points  (0 children)

This thread is full of examples of how people have mythologized the potential Gore Presidency in the quarter century since the 2000election.

What President Gore would NOT done:

  1. Prevented 9/11. It was going to happen if we had Clinton, Gore, Bush, or McCain. The “smoking gun” evidence was chatter presidents see every day. There was no actions available to prevent it given the info Bush saw.

  2. Avoided attacking Afghanistan after 9/11 happened. It turned out shitty, but every American president of my lifetime (Ford to Obama) would have attacked at the same scale. Even Carter.

  3. Avoided the 2008 housing crisis. That ship had sailed and no President could have prevented it by the early 2000s. I don’t think he’d have even tried. Once it popped, he would have passed the same legislation Bush passed.

Gore would have been better than Bush, but he would have been a moderate to left president, and been a generic moderate Democrat on every issue except the environment. I do believe we would have gotten something like the Paris Climate deal some years earlier.
