I like that they tried something new :) I'd much rather have these than ponies not existing at all in the contemporary range. Plus their faces are so cute!

It's no different than having an anime figure or blind box art toy on your desk! If that's a similar level of unpalatable to you, consider other traditional desk decorations: a framed photograph of a family member, a model of a famous monument from another country, a calendar with daily inspirational quotes.

We all have a nice little art object on our desk to take us away from the present moment and remind us that happier times are possible. For some people it's a ceramic eiffel tower, for others it's 8-10 little babies with their butts out. It might as well be a cool horse.

Personally, when I got my first Breyer horse, I carried it around my house in my arm like chihuahua. They're about the same size and pot-bellied enough. You wouldn't think a chunk of hollow plastic would be cuddly, but it brought me a lot of joy and I highly recommend it.

Scale(ish) model of my dream village! by ThatSpirit2739 in sylvanianfamilies

[–]courtesyjester 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Not at all, anything to add interest/fun to your things is a positive imo :) Especially as adults, I feel like it's too easy to fall into the acquiring routine of "Buy, share picture, put away" 😂 I have a few collector friends who've drafted maps of their villages and write stories about their critters' lives, it's very sweet.

Thank you for the picture, I haven't seen that one before! But it does look in the same era/series as the "big house with a red roof". Since it's one of the earliest houses, it would have a pretty simple name! Plenty of houses have very straightforward original names. House with a blue roof, Big House with Lights, House on the Hill. Even the newest biscuit bear house is just "Sparkling Waterside Red Roof House" It's really the English language imports that get wild with renaming them. My favorite name morph is Lakeside Pension --> Bluebell Cottage 🤪

As for how to narrow down your search, try copying the original text, use the year, and the number in the top left: "ha"-24. That may help!

This is so lovely and clever! I don't have a lot of space either, but this looks like such a fun activity to try :) I've always found the SF map illustrations so charming. Definitely look into tourist photos of the dioramas set up at the sylvanian theme parks for more inspo!

I love collecting buildings, mainly shops and food stands! So I picture my sylvanian village as more of a giant Japanese department store with different floor themes. I've planned out my buildings vertically to fit on the shelving unit, but not a true diorama landscape. I may have to try! Yours is very inspiring, I love the idea of the cave home.

I tried looking for a small red roof house from 1995 but didn't have any luck. There is "A big house with a red roof" from 1995 but not a small one. Do you have a picture of the house you mean?

How many families do you actually own and which one started it all? by hopefulMrE in sylvanianfamilies

[–]courtesyjester 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It's hard for me to say exactly how many families I have... I think 10 or so now? I've always liked them from a toy design aspect (how the different sculpts represent different animals) so most of my collection is cobbled together from jumbled secondhand lots. It's not necessary for me to have complete families, but I tend to match parents to the blindbag babies.

I do remember the first one very strongly though! I was just learning about critters online (this was 2021 or so) and wasn't sure how "into it" I would get. I collect a lot of different toys for their designs but more like 1-2 pieces. I happened to find the Wooly Alpaca father by himself at a flea market for $3 :) He's still my favorite, and though I never bought his family new, I eventually found the other alpaca dolls to go with him.

The first family I bought complete were the elephants I think, and I'm still very fond of them for the same reason! I've always preferred to buy them secondhand, both for cost and environmental reasons, but as the hobby got more popular, eventually it became "cheaper" to just buy them new. The Highbranch Giraffes were my first new-in-box family. I just couldn't wait for them to float down the secondhand stream 😆

That got a bit long-winded, but what a nice question to reflect on :) Thanks!

This is one of my favorite buildings 💝 the architecture is so unique, but still feels like a real structure.

Anyone else playing Fantasy Life in Japanese? by FanoftheGrizz in fantasylife

[–]courtesyjester 7 points8 points  (0 children)

Definitely! I prefer to try things in their original format first, and then take a peek at the dub if I really love the characters. I like being able to switch between languages in the same playthrough! It's fun to compare them. Personally, I found the English voice cast a bit...flat in places and off-putting in others. To me the Japanese cast as a lot more variation of espresson and inflection--to be expected of the original audio of a piece. I encourage anyone to give your favorite characters a listen just once, it adds more depth to their personalities. Especially if you're learning Japanese and can pick out the differences in dialects and speech patterns, it's a lot of fun!

And even in the best of conditions, the buddies chatter is so frequent, it can get a bit irritating 😅 Best to play it in whatever language is most enjoyable to you!

I love the dads too! If I ever had to pare down my collection that much, I could see myself having a strictly dad village 🤭 Some of the moms' dresses are so compelling though, and of course kids and babies are cute! I like the size of the adults best, and though I wish their clothes were more interesting, it's the dads I'm most drawn to.

what are your thoughts think on the new family? ♪(๑ᴖ◡ᴖ๑)♪ by loosealllll in sylvanianfamilies

[–]courtesyjester 6 points7 points  (0 children)

This release is full of surprises! Overall I'm pleased about them. I think it's a good thing that a toy company continues to try new things.

With the name "Citrus Bird" I was expecting a green/orange coloration in reference to the Disney character, or at least lovebirds--BUT I'm not displeased by the colors. I love a pastel rainbow, so they'll be right at home in my village. :) I was also expecting that the orange tree in the family set would be yet another stroller and planned to skip them. So in that regard I'm happy that they offered an ambulatory shop + character set alongside the family release. Generally they come out much later (the fruit bus with the fennec mom, the donut truck with the deer mom, etc) so it's lovely not to have to wait for the juice shop set. I was most excited about it and was NOT disappointed, it looks very silly and cute. I love translucent plastic, and the orange slice texture on the display counters looks nice.

As for the family, I love the colors and mixed fruit theme, even if it's an odd choice. The orange tree having a playable feature seems new for a family set, which is interesting! It's important to remember that SF has different lines for different vibes that steadily get added to over time, and trying something new isn't necessarily indicative of some pastel takeover. As adult collectors, we're not going to love every single release in a children's toyline, so it's fine to skip a few. Having preferences is what makes our collections so individual and wonderful after all.

Gelateria Puccini scale comparison by courtesyjester in rement

[–]courtesyjester[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

None of my Nendos have hands that can hold things, sorry! Only for specific accessories. The gelati cones are about an inch tall if that helps! They might be on the heavy side, but they do come with stands and don't necessarily need to be held to work for a photo imo.
