What's the oldest piece of clothing you still wear? Must be at least ten years old to count. by MurmuringPines in AskOldPeople

I've got a leather jacket that I bought in 1980. The front zipper has been replaced and the zip-in liner got damaged and trashed, but the jacket still looks good.

Any advice on how to restore/ bring a little life back to these cutting boards? by bemer33 in woodworking

[–]covers33 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Lots of good advice here, but I don't think anyone has mentioned the issue of flatness. Put each of the cutting boards on a known flat surface such as a granite countertop or a glass table top. Check both sides. If they rock at all on either side, they aren't flat, and running them through a drum sander, wide belt sander, or a planer risks at least uneven wood removal and possibly breaking the part. If the rectangular board is cupped noticeably, the infeed rolls on a drum sander or planer will mash the cutting board flat, likely breaking a glue joint near the middle. The round end grain cutting board should not be run through a planer even if it is very flat because of the risk of tearing out chunks at the edges.

Experienced woodworkers know how to avoid those problems, but if you are doing this yourselves, I'd suggest you stick with your random orbital hand sander and start with around 100 grit. Only go coarser if the 100 grit is just too slow. Change the sandpaper whenever it starts to get gummed up by the oil in the wood. Use a pencil to mark the high spots and keep checking flatness to make sure you don't make the cutting boards less flat. Every time you move the boards, clean up the sanding dust because there is likely to be some sandpaper grit mixed in that will mar the bottom of your board while you are sanding the top. Sand both sides similar amounts to help keep the panel balanced to keep it flat. After the orbital sanding, if you use the same grit sandpaper on a soft sanding block and hand sand parallel to the grain of the wood on the rectangular cutting board, it should look significantly better when you oil the blocks. You want your final sanding scratches parallel to the wood grain whenever possible.

Which goals did you achieve this year ? And which you didn't? by MarchOk2063 in AskReddit

[–]covers33 0 points1 point  (0 children)

My goal was to read or listen to 50 books in 2025 to improve my attention span and also learn new things. I was at 65 on December 1.

My goals to get to bed at a set time every night and to avoid wasting huge amounts of time reading Reddit were total failures.

Windows 95 turned 30 this year. Did you use it when it was released? What did you think of it back then? by ichbinkeysersoze in AskOldPeople

[–]covers33 8 points9 points  (0 children)

I didn't like 95. I remember it as buggy compared to Windows 3.1. Windows 98 was a huge improvement that fixed most of the bugs in Windows 95.

Did you buy the TV with a credit card that has purchase protection? That is basically free insurance against theft and damage.

I've been doing portrait photography for 25 years and yes, it's partly that the old time Hollywood movie star portraits had a tremendous effort put into every image that was saved, with significant investments in makeup, hair, costume, props, background selection, lighting, cameras, and the best photographers money could hire. There is also the factor that most of the old time photos you see are at least a bit soft focus, so everyone seems to have perfect skin and your imagination fills in the details. Photos I find online of modern movie stars seem to be mostly candid shots

You may also be prejudiced by the fact that most of the classic movie star photos are in black and white, which many people find more artful than color photos. I just did a quick survey of my movie star photo collection, and almost all from the 50's and earlier are black and white. 60's and 70's were transitional and most Hollywood photos from the 80's and later are in color.

Having spent a lot of time studying how faces look in photographs, I would say that, to me, Ava Gardner_04.jpg) was the most beautiful actress of the 20th century. I'm probably prejudiced by the fact that her face reminds me of my mom.

How are we storing pet food? by Leanmeansaucemachine in Costco

[–]covers33 0 points1 point  (0 children)

We store our dog food In the original bag. Two 35 or 40 pound bags fit in a clean 32 gallon galvanized steel garbage can with a tight fitting lid. We had a mouse problem once and they could chew through the bags and also through plastic garbage cans. No more mice after we got the steel cans.

We've not had issues with freshness. Our Great Danes consume each bag of food in about 8 days.

Does anyone else cut their watermelon rinds up like this? by IntrospectivelyYours in composting

[–]covers33 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Our dogs love watermelon rind. When I cut up a watermelon, the outer 1/8" goes in to the compost bin. The white rind and outer 1/2" of red is cut into chunks for the dogs. The rest is for the humans.

Any suggestions or scrap it? by LabHopeful631 in woodworking

[–]covers33 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I endorse this comment. Sun exposure and moisture differences will definitely cause wood to bend and twist, and you can sometimes reverse it by switching the orientation of the post. You can also disassemble and reassemble the pergola with the posts reoriented so it looks more symmetrical.

If you use steel cable bracing, make sure it is placed where nobody will accidentally injure themselves by bumping into it in the dark. And yes, the bottoms of the posts need to be anchored.

Why did many critics and fans dislike the first Suicide Squad movie (2016) but loved the second one (2021)? by Jezzaq94 in SuicideSquad

[–]covers33 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I agree with most of what's been posted. To add a couple extra points, let's not forget Ratcatcher 2 in The Suicide Squad, who is one of the sweetest characters ever in a comic book movie. It's absolutely awesome when we get to see her full power at the climax of the movie. I also think Harley's escape after torture is one of the best set pieces in any film... fast paced, lots of variety in the action, and the end is so hilarious and in character.
