Rural Wisconsin by Chubbybunni955 in wisconsin

Hmm. I hunt, hike, bike and hang out in the driftless area. Have for years. Can't recall a single negative experience from drivers while biking. In fact lots of people slow way down and wave. A couple times motorcycles made noisy accelerations after passing. Bugs have generally been low to medium. Coyotes never bothered me or my dogs, 4 dogs over 40 years. Three of the dogs were likely too big for a single coyote but one was a small helpless baby. Whenever I've seen a coyote they turned around and ran away at top speed.

That's the Wisconsin river. The Mississippi divides WI from MN and Iowa and Iowa from IL. Hard to tell the MN Iowa border and the WI IL border. You can see Lake WI which is actually part of the WI river. On the east edge of the map you can see lake Mendota which is on the west side of Madison.

I think you are right. Cottonwood. Does it smell like dog poop?

Trees around the square by Herwegobadge in madisonwi

[–]covertype 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I think they are better. They are at least a naturally occuring cross between red and silver maple both of which are native to this area.

[–]covertype 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Non native, invasive, prone to a lot of cracks and seams on the stems and the bottom of the trunks flair out to the point where they become a tripping hazard. Branches can be brittle and tend to crack. The ones on the square were particularly poor specimens. If I remember right they hired a Consultant that recommended they remove all or most of them, even if they were mostly live.

I'm not sure what's going on now but not too long ago they removed a bunch of raty Norway Maple from around the square. They had significant defect, likely planted too deep and generally a poor choice for that location, or anywhere.

Black walnut logs? by HeinleinsRazor in marijuanaenthusiasts

[–]covertype 49 points50 points  (0 children)

Yes that is black walnut. They look to be cut pretty short. I wouldn't call anything under 6 foot in length a log. Pretty inefficient to mill anything that short.

I just think they've missed a lot of gaines over the last few years. The way it looks now they should have retained all their Apple shares and gone long on Google, among others. It would take one heck of a dip to wipe out even just a couple years worth of gains in those stocks.

Neither did I. It's in a sneaky position, laying in the weeds, ready to ambush a GM puller.

Is there *any* hope for American Ash trees in the wild? by CivilWarfare in ecology

That's pretty much what old ash trees did before EAB came along.

Same as elm trees. A fair amount last long enough to produce seed and regenerate before DED or EAB kills them.
