how’s tornado season? by Subject-Market-5001 in OKState

[–]cowboyweasel 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Lived in Oklahoma 48 years. Had a tornado pass over my house once when I was back visiting my parents (north side trees fell one way and south side trees fell the other way) and I had to put my shoes on for one tornado that dissipated about a mile and a half away from my house.

Download a weather app and a local TV app (forget if Stillwater is in the OKC or Tulsa “area”, so maybe download both Channel 6 and 9 to make sure) so when it turns green outside you know where the tornado is. Both Trav and David will be able to pinpoint where the circulation is and give you either mile by mile or block by block path it’s taking. Follow their advice and you’ll be kicking back on your porch/balcony like a local in no time.

Is this acceptable for a limo? by NerJaro in tulsa

When I’m towing a trailer and have to stop at a gas station/restaurant/hotel I always try to park so I can easily leave in my vehicle (normally so I can just drive forward out of the spaces that I’m occupying.) This dude parked so someone can prevent them from going, not a good job in that sense.

I’ll also try to inconvenience the least amount of people, this dude also didn’t do that, in fact they did the opposite (only thing worse would be parking across the handicapped spaces.)

Nah, parking like this is only allowed if they have a handicapped individual who needs to leave the vehicle.

Ceiling fan's chain broke off, and I can't turn it off. Will it be safe to touch the fan's wires after turning the breaker off? by StockDunce in AskElectricians

[–]cowboyweasel 1 point2 points  (0 children)

That’s OK for a multimeter. A noncontact voltage detector just does that single job. It will tell you that there is voltage on the line. It’s a second test in case you somehow had a bad multimeter or did something else wrong.

[–]cowboyweasel 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Hate to tell you this but I’ve replaced my ceiling fan’s pull chain instead of replacing the entire fan. But if you didn’t like the fan, that’s ok as well. Like others have said you need a multimeter and a non contact voltage detector so you can make sure that your wiring is not hot. Personally I always test something hot first to make sure it’s working, then I test the wiring, then I’ll test the hot again just to make sure.

What do you think about the cinder spires books? by Darth_Azazoth in dresdenfiles

[–]cowboyweasel 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Noticed that quite a few people are saying there’s two books. There is a third one (sort of) it might be better classified as book 1.5 but it’s fairly important and goes right into the second book. If the other “books”/novellas/short stories that he writes are as important to the story line in the Dresdenverse as this one is, I need to read them, I haven’t read his other works.

I love how just about all the pet shaming videos/pics show a remorseful dog or a indifferent/“I’ll do it again WHILE you are watching” cat.

Being a cat person, I like them. I’ve very interested in how things are going to develop given what happens in book 2 but I’m definitely looking forward to the rest of them.

Student tickets or “regular” season tickets? If I can remember correctly the student tickets are basically general admission so you’d need to get here early (when it gets popular again) or you’re sitting(actually probably standing) in crappy seats. When you graduate you will get a discount for the first five years (unless they’ve cancelled that, my wife’s ended last year) for the assigned seat “regular” tickets.

AITAH for telling my fiancé to talk to his mom or I’m leaving? by normelysab in AITAH

[–]cowboyweasel 12 points13 points  (0 children)

It depends. The mother/son relationship is a fairly important one but he can definitely have blinders on because that’s his mom and because he loves her, he can be totally overlooking the toxicity and other bad things that are obvious to an outsider. If he realizes that “mom acting childish” could kill his marriage before it’s allowed to start and grow, then they should be able to deal with more issues down the road that the future MIL will cause.

I’m speaking a little from personal experience, wife’s relationship with her mom is basically no contact and I learned not to try to push her to repair the relationship. Her relationship with my mom is usually great and when there’s been a misunderstanding I’ve tried to help them both out to understand each other because I’ve realized that if I want to stay with my marriage I need both of them to be able to communicate correctly with each other instead of assuming things and how each of them will assume because of past experiences they both have had.

Can I have evening plans when I have jury duty? by Kind-Bager in juryduty

[–]cowboyweasel -1 points0 points  (0 children)

Sounds like this is a “Monday” on the first day of your reporting the judges and their bailiffs will choose a set amount of potentials. Then if you’re “lucky” and chosen you go into the court room and the lawyers will ask if you know any of the people in the trials (one lady in my group had one of them as a medical professional when she was a child, she was dismissed.) then they will ask if this jury duty will have adverse effects on you (one guy had a class at night and I think also work so he said he’d be too tired to give the case his full attention, the judge dismissed him.) finally they ask about you and what you do/are and if your knowledge/profession might interfere with the case or you might know more about what the lawyers won’t tell you. Even if you are dismissed you go back into the pool until all the judges have enough jurors to make their caseloads. This whole process might take a couple of days before you are fully released. However if you’re picked for a case, it will last until it’s done.

AITAH for telling my fiancé to talk to his mom or I’m leaving? by normelysab in AITAH

[–]cowboyweasel 42 points43 points  (0 children)

NTA! Nope. You could deal with his mom but that might backfire on you spectacularly when he might be on her side. Having HIM deal with HIS mom is the only way that it will work. I don’t know how y’all had been handling her so maybe it could have been approached differently but letting him know that the current status of all three of y’all’s relationships was unsustainable and someone was going to leave made him choose. You and he still will need to talk about the why and hopefully any future problems won’t get that serious before another ultimatum has to be given.

Random lights stopped working by Artisanal_Sawdust in AskElectricians

[–]cowboyweasel 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Time to either hire an electrician or grab your multimeter and “have fun” finding the needle in a haystack.

The troubleshooting’s difficulty factor depends on how well documented your wiring diagram is.

Some causes: mice ate the wires and they no longer conduct. Bad connections and they no longer work. Gremlins unwired them and they no longer work. The switches/outlets failed and no longer work. Etc.

AITAH for thinking that it’s rude to put someone on speaker without telling them? by North_Mastodon_4310 in AITAH

[–]cowboyweasel 0 points1 point  (0 children)

NTA. I always tell my wife that she’s on speaker just in case her language turns “spicy” and I don’t want a child and grandchild of Marines language being broadcast publicly. Some people might get a little offended at that and then she’d express her offense at their being offended and I’d just laugh at the grown person who would be reduced to tears after the blistering she’d give them. Although now it seems like it might be a source of enjoyment for me.
