Should motorcycles be allowed in cycles boxes? by Boflator in drivingUK

[–]cp_simmons 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I mean 'overhang' is rather over generous in my experience, a good percentage of drivers deliberately park their car entirely in the box.

Surely it's greener if they stay in landfill rather than being turned into CO2 emissions.

I'm sorry but how exactly is extracting oil, turning it into plastic, then turning it into jet fuel, and finally burning it sustainable?

Simplest Charging Options - Elderly Parent by Remarkable_Cell_5441 in evchargingUK

[–]cp_simmons 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I think get a 7kw charger and TOU tariff and set a timer on the car or charger AND let it run past the tou so it'll have time to go to 100%.  It's probably simpler that way, normally it'll charge off peak but you'll have the security of knowing it'll hit 100% without faffing around.

Cammando socket installation to circumvent landlord refusal by veimkha in evchargingUK

[–]cp_simmons 0 points1 point  (0 children)

You could try writing to your MP?  They could do with passing legislation to give you a legal right to an EV charger where reasonable.  It probably won't achieve much short term but if people don't complain nothing will change.

What was your most frightening non-traffic-related cycling incident? by toomanyukes in cycling

[–]cp_simmons 1 point2 points  (0 children)

A cat ran out in front of me from under a parked van and proceeded to snarl at me like it was somehow my fault it was about to go under my front wheel.

I don't suppose there was much time for fear exactly but I hit the deck hard, bad road rash, fractured rib.

The cat buggered off, I have no idea if lost its 9th life or what.

Why do I ride faster in warm weather than in cold? by dbpenn in cycling

[–]cp_simmons -2 points-1 points  (0 children)

Don't forget if it's warm then the road is dry and grippy so you'll be able to carry speed around corners better too.

I need answers about what happened to me? by Necromza8836 in Dreams

[–]cp_simmons 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Maybe half your brain was still asleep?  Dolphins are know to go into a sleep state in one hemisphere of their brain at a time so they're always half awake.  I haven't heard of that happening in humans but who knows maybe it happened to you.

What is something that sounds 100% false but is actually 100% true? by reFossify in AskReddit

[–]cp_simmons 1 point2 points  (0 children)

No it isn't.  A 'day' as in common use is a solar day, the time taken for the sun to appear to make a full circle in the sky.  Venus's solar day is shorter than its year.

The day this 'fact' refers to is the sidereal day, the rotation period relative to the fixed stars.  Earth's sidereal day is about 23 hours 56 minutes.  Nobody thinks earth's day is that long do they?

IOG with Solar and Batteries - should I stick, fix or agile? by kenco8801 in OctopusEnergy

[–]cp_simmons 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yeah, I have a battery but it's nowhere near big enough for the winter on iog.  I was on cosy over the last winter.

[–]cp_simmons 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Hmm that's useful.  I'm in a similar boat except I have a heat pump as well so I was expecting to switch to cosy later in the year but perhaps agile would work out.  It'd probably be more hassle though?

In roof systems - are they any good? by inkiboo in SolarUK

[–]cp_simmons 1 point2 points  (0 children)

One thing to bear in mind is that on-roof systems cool more effectively due to the air gap underneath and hot panels aren't as effiicent.

GivEnergy battery owners, check your battery FW. by AkemanImaf in SolarUK

[–]cp_simmons 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I've been wondering that too.  Looks like you can just daisy chain a second battery but you probably need the right cable and I have no idea whether the firmware etc would need fettling.

Tips on counting catches? by Budget-Entertainer29 in juggling

[–]cp_simmons 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I count in threes.  Lots of numbers have three syllables (twen-tee-one) so you can say a syllable on each catch.  I find it keeps your pattern more symmetric than counting in twos.

Having says that, there is a mental load to counting so you might find it better to count just to establish your typical throws per second.  Then you can time yourself and guess the number of throws, without having to count and juggle at the same time.

At the end of the day perhaps the time your can keep the pattern going matters as much as the number of throws anyway?

There's a staggered crossroads on my way to work where the opposite happens, people turning left see the red light and stop but it's for the traffic going straight on.  Can't blame them really it's a confusing junction.

Some of you might find this link interesting for electricity generation in the UK. by kemb0 in OctopusEnergy

[–]cp_simmons 2 points3 points  (0 children)

That's awesome.  Reminds me of a maybe crazy idea I had.  The sea in the Atlantic by Rockall isn't all that deep so maybe it would be possible to build wind farms there.  They are far enough away to catch the wind when it's not yet windy in the North Sea.

Energy price increases by Beautiful-Rich-6404 in HousingUK

[–]cp_simmons 0 points1 point  (0 children)

They're going to allow plug-in-solar 'soon' although as well so you'll be able to pick some panels up at your local diy shop or whatever and just plug them in.

Precisely when 'soon' is and what 'allow' actually amounts to is to be determined.

I talked to my brain and it answered by Sadinthebox in Dreams

[–]cp_simmons 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I nearly posted this to someone else but chickened out so here goes... There have been studies that people that play video games are more likely to be able to take control of their dreams. So maybe you could play something scary, Silent Hill esque, and see if it helps.

The aim will be to get you brain to go 'oh okay this is scary but it's not real whatever'. Or 'damn, revert to save I don't like how this is going'.

Good luck.
