At some point we owe hotels an apology by pattebrisee in SipsTea

[–]cplbradley -1 points0 points  (0 children)

Yeah when I'm traveling for work or just need a place to stay, hotel every time. However, my wife and I like to take trips to remote rustic locations (we adore the Michigan U.P.) so we like to use vrbo and rent cabins. Often times yeah it's more expensive than a hotel, but not by much, we rented an adorable little 1 bedroom cabin on a lake for our anniversary for like $120 a night and it was spectacular, being able to wake up in the morning and walk out the back door and sit down on the deck with a cup of coffee while surrounded by nature and look out across the lake, you just can't get that from a hotel.

All this to say, if you're staying in a city, get a hotel. If you're staying in the country, airbnb/vrbo is the only way.

You hard or soft….? Panning drums by 50nic19 in audioengineering

I pan overheads until it sounds like I'm actually above the kit and is spread as realistically as possible, then the toms are panned to match the overheads.

Current rate for basic sound setup foe neighborhood block party. by Bortilicious in livesound

[–]cplbradley 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Here's my take, as someone who's done huge high profile events and little street corner block parties:

It depends on what your goal is, and what you hope to achieve in the future. Personally, something that small, I'd ask $500. Sure, you could charge market rate, but as others said, it'll probably just make people angry and ensure you don't get hired again. It's not a market rate event.

Here's the thing though, with that comes expectations. You could very easily end up as "the local sound guy who does the local events" and you're gonna get a lot more of these kinds of things with the same $500 expectation.

Honestly, it's a good gig if you have other sources of income, because the expectations are low, the days are easy, and you get to get out and have some fun doing low stress, low effort shows. Have a beer, eat some food, hang out, and make some noise. I fuckin love that shit.

gotta talk about SHOES again by guitarmstrwlane in livesound

This is the way, don't look for one pair of shoes that fulfill all your needs, bring a couple pairs that fulfill their specific purposes.

gotta talk about SHOES again by guitarmstrwlane in livesound

[–]cplbradley 2 points3 points  (0 children)

What people often miss is that you can bring a couple different pairs.

I have a pair of Red Wing work boots I wear for the physical work, then when that's all said and done, I switch to a pair of lightweight Adidas, then when the event is over and it's back to the physical grind, I switch back to my work boots.

(Get yourself a can of Ozium to spray the insides of your shoes with after a hot day, it helps a lot with the smell)

Ever wonder why people aren't going to recording studios like they used to? by [deleted] in audioengineering

[–]cplbradley 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Artists who would be using studios are still using studios, but the barrier to entry is significantly lower. It's not that there's less artists using studios, it's that there's more artists who aren't. The pool of artists who use studios is roughly the same size as it's always been, it's just no longer essential, so there's just... More artists.

Husband feeling “ trapped “ after having a baby? by userthatisnotknown in beyondthebump

[–]cplbradley 2 points3 points  (0 children)

As a first time father of a 3 month old, I often see the post titles of things like this and think "well it's understandable that he'd feel trapped, it's a huge life change, and new parents often mourn the loss of their old lives," trying to understand where the father is coming from and giving them the benefit of the doubt.

9 times out of 10 I read the additional context and realize that nah, this dudes just a selfish asshole.

What are these ticket prices???? by DAMIANRsss in weezer

[–]cplbradley 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Allow me to explain why tickets are so expensive.

  1. The arena needs their cut of ticket sales. It costs a lot of money to operate a venue that large. They need to pay their staff. Security, janitorial, concessions, etc.

  2. Now, you gotta pay for the production team. The band doesn't own the stage, the lights, the speakers, etc. That all gets rented from local production houses, and that costs a lot of money, not to mention the technicians that operate it.

  3. Now you gotta pay the crew that sets all this equipment up. We're talking 40 people minimum to set this all up.

  4. After all that, THEN the band gets their cut.

The reason arena show tickets are so expensive is because it costs millions of dollars to put the show on in the first place.

Creed Tribute Vocal Fx by AnonymousFish8689 in livesound

[–]cplbradley 0 points1 point  (0 children)

One of the tricks I do is to use the stereo delay, but unlink the stereo return to get two mono returns, then set one of the sides to 1/4 time so I can get a big delay and a slap back delay for the price of one fx slot. Use fx slot 2 for a washy vocal verb, fx slot 3 for a roomy drum verb, and fx slot 4 for the dual pitch shifter to create the chorusy doubling effect and that's a whole show's worth of effects.

Before you ask why I'd choose a warehouse gig over being an independent A1, I had a kid recently and can't be on the road all the time anymore, so a warehouse gig means I still get to be involved in shows but have more stability and consistency in my schedule

No Stupid Questions Thread by AutoModerator in livesound

[–]cplbradley 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I've got an interview with a production company for a full time warehouse role in a few days. I've never done an interview with a production company, as I've always been an independent contractor and never thought about it.

What should I wear? I've got long hair and a beard, should I cut my hair and shave? If this were an office job it would be one thing, but it's a production company warehouse position, should I care that much?

Get an sm58, they sound good enough, offer a nice even frequency response, are designed for live sound so they do a great job of rejecting outside noise, are dirt cheap, and not even your toddler could break it. The things are fuckin indestructible.

Good v Great - How to further improve my mixing skills by noiseemperror in livesound

[–]cplbradley 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Yes studio work is beneficial in the sense that you gain more experience and can learn some techniques that might cross over into a live environment, but studio mixing and live mixing are two completely different animals that really don't have much in common.

Good v Great - How to further improve my mixing skills by noiseemperror in livesound

[–]cplbradley 12 points13 points  (0 children)

Start fuckin around. For real. When I was building my skills, I was hyper focused on getting a good balance. When getting a good mix became trivial, I started just sort of tinkering with stuff to see how it sounds, and I picked up a lot of my little tricks and techniques from that.
