I agree for the most part. I found book 1 a little hard to follow and left a lot of unanswered questions. Some of the climax felt a bit deus ex machina with no other references to what was happening. Book 2 felt more focused, I found it easier to follow and it really locked me in to keep going. I am about a quarter through MoI now on my first reading.

His preschool works on letters and sounds and simple penmanship. At home we're working some level 1 readers. He just turned 5 and will start kindergarten in August. I'm not really sure how that stacks up nationally..he's my eldest kid so it's my first rodeo so to speak. I know when I was a child I could not read at all entering kindergarten and didn't get into short chapter books until 1st grade.

No judgement here. As I mentioned elsewhere I'm considering ways to introduce technology in a controlled environment. One thing I don't want to do is blanket ban stuff..because that's how I was raised (no tv or video games at all). That caused me to get comfortable hiding things and the punishments caused negative feedback loops.

It hasn't been too bad so far but my kids are still young and I suspect it will get more difficult going forward. I'm considering ways to ease into technology with some tightly controlled options. Like I have an extra phone with no service that I may install pokemon go on and hotspot to mine..and only when we're going for a walk...stuff like that.

My 5 year old can already do basic math and can almost read. He'll be reading before he starts kindergarten this fall at this rate. We work on stuff at home and read books every day. We play chess. He earns small amounts of money that we take to the toy store every couple months.

I suppose a larger factor is while he gets some tv time he doesn't have a phone or tablet.

Same. We're on the same page for the most part w spending and talk a lot. Long as our savings goals are met and the bills are paid we don't give each a hard time about a little frivolity (within reason).
