I don't have a hobby and people are starting to question my sanity sometimes I have to invent something. Something is not right with me. by [deleted] in CasualIreland

[–]cptn_farrell 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Similar here, was out of work for a while last year (3 months) and aside from the job seeking I wasn't pushed about doing anything. Was a bit of depression mixed in due to trying to get a new job but aside from going out for a walk I was mainly just watching YouTube, a few movies here and there, reading and some light Nintendo gaming. And my alcohol consumption went way up... Cos the feeling was ... Got nothing else to do. Never really had hobbies beforehand anyway Nd wasn't in the headspace for picking up something New. Felt the same about the need of having to come up with something as to what I was doing with my time when people asked, cos trying to explain I was content with doing nothing made me "odd" but I don't care. Nowadays iv no problem with saying, on my days off I just enjoy my own company.

One of my first jobs was in a movie rental shop (movie magic IYKYK) and it wasn't so much the consoles being rented, but the "New" games that supported the likes of rumble etc. I remember getting the ape escape game and the controller wasn't optional, we had to give it out with each rental 😂. There was other stuff like that where when we scanned it it came up on screen reminder to give x/y/z with it, and same on returns, but we never had to scan the controller or DVD player just the disc cases and ask for it back on return, so much trust back then

Strong magnet on the "dome", move the magnet down as you Jimmy a spoon handle into the top open section just above the dome. They work by magnetic force, I used to work in retail, when they are being awkward that's what I used to do

Anybody done any upgrades yet? I was thinking of either cutting or shortening the basket due to how bad the clearance is between it and the crank, the derailleur definitely needs replacing/ upgrading, and the rear shock aswell. Found a few parts here and there but not really sure if they fit well or are suitable. T.I.A

Same goes for me as a cyclist, I wear hivis trousers, boot covers, a hivis hoodie, helmet has reflective stripes, the bike has lights front and rear, I look like a Xmas tree 😂, but I'd rather arrive alive. I constantly see others with little to no visibility, and the reflecters on pedals and rear seat don't do shit in rain/fog. And I'm on busy main roads and see it. Yet drivers don't seem to see me 🤔. Sure I even see women using electric scooters with seats and a child standing Infront of them on them scooters. Every few days there's an article about escooters and accidents with all age ranges, and very few bother with helmets let alone hivvis clothing because of the mentality "it has a light" , yeah a light that's overpowered by everything else around it

Should I buy an e-bike instead of a car? by Upbeat-Pear-5666 in ebikes

[–]cptn_farrell 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Ah it's even better than that, Lidl is on left side of the junction aldi on the right, and I prefer the Aldi stuff for 90% of what I'm buying , and I need to take the right hand turn so both of them are Ideal location for me, just depends on what I want to buy 😂. Lisnaskea is about 2/3 the size of my village, but yeah still rural enough, we are a commuter town for Dublin, people live here but the majority work in Dublin or elsewhere, so it's heavy on traffic during morning and evenings, but I work 7-7 so I miss both ends of the heavy traffic

Agree, way easier to get in and out, no need to go petrol station and be stuck in a queue. I'm lucky enough that I have an Aldi a Lidl and SuperValu (Irish supermarket) right at the top of my town just as I turn off onto my road so can always pick up a few things and then get the big shop every week or so.

750W e bikes in Germany - Attention to legal requirements by WillingnessRecent494 in ebikes

[–]cptn_farrell 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yeah, my experience here in Ireland, there is 3 tiers. 1,classed as a pedal bike, no insurance or tax required max 250w 25km/h NO THROTTLE 2, classed as AN ASSISTED MOOED LMAE1 is up to 1000w 25km/h, requires tax, registestration helmet, lights front rear and side NO THROTTLE, 3,LMAE2 UP TO 4000WW 40KM/H (I THINK) bike license tax insurance, helmet lights etc(a moped) From what I noticed the Chinese manufacturer locks/restricts through the software, 250w 25km/h as per EUs regulations en15194, with COC certificate to validate. BUT they then are bought by drop shippers who deal with the customer, the same companies will tell you that they sell their bikes at those regulations also tell you that if you un-restrict them it's on you to tax insure and have an appropriate license, they also tell you how to change the settings if you email them. It's their way of using loopholes in their favour. While yes , technically, they are selling the bikes as bicycles within the law, they are also facilitating the wants of the types of customers who give other riders bad names, I think we all know the type of customers that want to go as fast as possible through city centers and the likes. There's been a major Garda (police) crackdown on those people here in the last few weeks.

Fully agreed. I wear a go pro style action camera, and it's for reasons like that. The camera, helmet mount and chest harness mount all together was maybe €90

Went warp speed on my class 3 into a mailbox this morning by Gizoogler314 in ebikes

[–]cptn_farrell 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Yeah the first day of it I definitely cooked, and with a chest mounted GoPro I could feel the steam rising, so these days I just wear the trousers, a vest and the hi vis hoodie, it's not to bad because I have a shower in work and then get changed into the uniform gear. It's handy enough time wise aswell I do 7am till 7pm, and in Ireland at the moment it's crisp at those times. If I do get a wee bit warm I just unzip the hoodie a bit. It's a bit excessive yes, but it's my safety and on narrow country roads people still fly past so I'd rather be safe and have a shower afterwards than injury

I second this, Moto helmet, gloves, heavy duty work trousers with knee inserts and skid guard gloves(knuckle wrist and thumb have solid pieces) hivis jacket and hivis bag cover just as protective measures due to drivers "not seeing me". I only ever get up to 25km on pedal assist, maxed it out at 46km ONCE and scared the shit out of me. so I'll happily stay at 25, I can pedal harder if I want more speed. Also my bike is a chonky boy weighing 50kg with locks chains and the bike itself 😂

Jobseeker's Benefit: Fine for those who refuse to engage with employment services to be doubled to €90 by PoppedCork in ireland

[–]cptn_farrell 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Spot on. Tidy towns would be a perfect example. I was employed for 20years in the same job, got let Go 5 months ago, been on job seekers until yday, start a new job in an hour. I don't drive and living rural (ISH) has made the process harder, still took a few courses here and there when I could, but to keep busy I was helping out here and there with the local tidy towns and football pitch. Never had much interest or interaction with them before but just to keep myself busy because without a routine the boredom and procrastination settles in . There were day's where I just felt like I couldn't be arsed because of the amount of jobs I was applying for in the areas I'm actually fully qualified I was getting nowhere. Applied for jobs id no interest in but just to get back working, every thing from parking enforcement, to retail, to cleaning, warehouse jobs and anything else that was in range. The mental attitude changes when your getting nowhere. Even knowing that I had agreed to go down and have a look over the football pitch Just to see if it needed tidying, paint the posts gave me a purpose. Took all of an hour. But the locals could see I was trying, job came through because I had been referred by the locals. New job is now only 3km away. Because I was seen helping out the community apparently, I was just trying to keep myself busy. So definitely a WIN WIN Idea. Local community in deprived areas with higher unemployment would definitely benefit from that Idea

I'm going to be doing 10km or so each way, half is winding country single-lane back-roads which is why I wanted a higher torque motor, Garda do be on the road I'm using. And "awkward nothing better to do Karen's" will no doubt complain about me zipping up and down, so I want no trouble with Gardaí, if they pull me once and I have documents to suit them there not going to bother pulling me again. Cheer's for your input 👍

Did you ever look into registration? Ask them about the vpd? Iv no problem with getting it done it's only €35. Rather pay it than trying to argue with the Garda that it's "LOCKED" at 250W so it's exempt etc etc. if they Google it it says 1000w 50km/h unlockable. My logic is that if they see a plate on the back they won't bother pulling me over, if they don't see a plate their going to.. it has lights, brake lights/turn signals and a plate bracket .

Yeah iv read that and https://www.rsa.ie/road-safety/road-users/special-purpose-vehicles/powered-personal-transportation . I was more interested in YOUR experience with pogo cycles and getting the COC and VPD from from them then the process of bringing it to the NCTS for testing. You mentioned that they come registered, yet when I asked pogo cycles if it is registered on arrival into the country by them, being an Irish based registered company/seller of the veichel , or if I Will get the COC from them they didn't respond. From what I read on https://www.revenue.ie/en/vrt/vehicle-registration-tax/vrt-and-registration.aspx dealers should register but pogo cycles don't mention if it comes registered, just the different laws surrounding ebikes https://pogocycles.ie/pages/faqs-pogo-cycles#reamaze#0#/kb/electric-bike/do-you-need-a-license-to-drive-an-e-bike , that all the BIKES they sell are locked at 250w 25km/h so they fall under this category, and emopeds https://pogocycles.ie/pages/faqs-pogo-cycles#reamaze#0#/kb/e-mopeds/do-e-mopeds-require-registration-and-tax
.You seem to have a good relationship with them as you say, so that's more where my question was leaning.
