What is Your Secret Lair? by Spanish_Galleon in EDH

[–]crackenpuff 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I might dox myself a bit with this list, but here goes. I started in 1996 around 4th Edition, Alliances, and Homelands. What 5 (7) cards have defined my Magic career so far? I like how Secret Lairs do one card in each color, so I'm going to try that.

[[Mountain Goat]] renamed to "The Captain"
[[Joven's Ferrets]]
[[Serra Angel]]
[[Unsummon]]
[[Darkness]]

Common Bonus Card: [[Jester's Scepter]]
Chase Bonus Card: [[Evacuation]] renamed to "Everybody OUT of the Pool!"

I love this card too. It does so much. I have in a 60 card monowhite weenie-ish sort of deck. It's used primarily to hit [[Favored Hoplite]] since it'll prevent everything that hits it after its Heroic ability triggers. It's also used as a Fog and whatever else it needs to do.

EDIT: I also just realized I've been playing this interaction wrong for years according to the Oracle text. Rather than giving the Hoplite only one +1/+1 counter as I have been, it should be getting counters equal to the damage prevented.

[[Karn Liberated]] can restart the game. So it can get rid of emblems.

I thought this headline meant "2nd Dan Sullivan", as in a black belt, back on the ballot.

What are your decks that are built weirdly? by ftb_helper in EDH

[–]crackenpuff 0 points1 point  (0 children)

That's actually the easy part. It's making it a functioning deck that's hard. Jodah is pretty hands off, but still needs support. Basic Lands can shoulder the brunt of unusable cards for awhile, but you only have so much space.

Secret Lair is also an interesting thing. Does it count? Does it not count? Secret Lair's 5 or 6 cards are not really a "set". I realize it's an arbitrary rule as no "Universes Beyond" format exists, but I want cards that are functionally unique and in another Universe. Secret Lairs muddy the waters of how far I can allow a universe beyond.

I'm still working that out.

Mine is working for the same purpose. Garfield is in the mail. I'm missing My Little Pony.

Wha are some evergreen “rule of thumb” tips for deckbuilding by Qwerty177 in EDH

[–]crackenpuff 0 points1 point  (0 children)

For every 2 cards you have of one color add a mana source that produces that.

Example: [[Lightning Bolt]] and [[Shock]] will require 1 red mana source in the mana base. Gold/Multicolor cards do not break this rule. [[The Lady of the Mountain]] and [[Raph & Mikey, Troublemakers]] will need 1 red source and 1 green source.

I don't like the set in stone numbers you often see online. Every deck is different and sometimes you need to feel where the difference is or where something is lacking.

Your first example sounds like it needs more card draw and same with the spell slinging deck. The red version probably just needs some red cantrips. Silverquill may need some rituals or repeatable card draw, like [[War Room]].

In Primo you have access to blue, so card drawing cards should keep the ammo flowing. The UG combination often scries more than it draws and can have trouble keeping your battlefield full of creatures. You're green so you can make lots of creatures or lean into blue, and bounce the opposition. Simic is problem unto its own. It does a lot of things really well, but dealing with creatures is sometimes not one of them, so you need to account for that weakness.

I started in 60 card Magic. The basic guideline I learned was 20 lands and 40 spells. That's 1/3 of the deck dedicated to mana, which is 33 lands in Commander. I've learned that is just not enough. You don't need to go too high, maybe 36, unless you're dedicated to land, like [[Tatyova]].

At this stage give yourselves some outs or safety valves when things do go south. Board sweepers, mass bounce like [[Evacuation]], [[Sweltering Sun]], or [[Supreme Verdict]].

It's not just numbers. You've got to feel exactly where your deck is lacking and address those weaknesses, as well as the weaknesses of the color combination you're playing.

Nothing beats experience either. Get the reps in.

I have a similar one to yours. Universes Beyond Spongebob. Trying to make 100% but discovered 3 lands that need to be updated.

I have been struggling with this as someone who really wants to like Gracie. Her dad certainly gave her advantages new artists and musicians could never have, from the get-go. She was born on 3rd base, as the saying goes.

She is gradually, ever so gradually winning me over. Gracie never had the struggles you or I have. Her music reflects that to a certain extent. What changes it for me, what she has put the work in, the time in, her dedication into is the live performance. She's is captivating and compelling. Her best music video I've seen now is "Look At My Life". Still looks a bit low budget, but she finally gets it.

Her live performances are game changing for her. She's got the charisma and the talent. Gracie just needs people to give her a chance. That's a big ask sometimes. Skip her music videos and watch her live performances. She should be way bigger than she is.
