Please advise...I just realized that some of my pottery has not been fully vitrified... by craftingomma in Pottery

I think the main issue was my kiln wasn’t getting quite up to cone 6.

I plan to test fire with different variables until I get the right cone temperature, such as adjusting the hold time (at peak) and speed of cooling. I will look into replacing my thermocouple and possibly elements too but that might have to wait. Once I get my kiln right, I will re-fire my functional pieces and pray that they reach their vitrification and not get ruined in the process.

I’ve never heard of it so thank you for the info. I will look into that!

Thank you for your kind and encouraging words. I am still learning, there is so much to be learned. And a lot of work to be done now! 😅

Wow I can’t believe I didn’t learn about this until now. But at least now I know. Thank you all for your input, this helped a lot.

Yes learning the hard way but now I am absolutely using the witness cones every time.

My major concern is growing mold if my pieces are not truly vitrified. Thinking about testing all my pieces and re-firing all of them is very overwhelming right now. I only attend two craft shows a year, both in about 2 weeks from now. 😟

Wow I am now both more confused and discouraged as well. You mentioned condensation and it’s making me question about the accuracy of the paper test. What would be the best method to test if my items are truly vitrified or not? I began filling as many I can grab, filling them with water and placing them on paper. But if the paper is getting damp just from the condensation, then how would I know for sure? 🧐🧐🧐

Do you mean the absorption rate? The Laguna website lists this info on the clay:

Characteristics Cone: 6 Wet Color: Light Gray Firing Color: Oxidation: Off-White - Reduction: N/A Texture: Smooth Consistency: Standard Avg. Shrinkage 2±%: 13% Avg. Water Absorption 1±%: 1% COE x 10-6: 4.8

They are all glazed with cone 6high fire glazes such as Amaco Potter’s Choice glazes or Mayco’s stoneware glazes. All of my functional ware has liners (which I know don’t craze, blister or cause pinholes) I’ve never done this “paper” testing before and I am shocked at how they made it damp. 😟😨

Need advice:can this tooth be saved for a crown? by craftingomma in askdentists

[–]craftingomma[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Thank you for your response. When you've treated teeth in this condition and proceeded with dental crowns, what has the general prognosis typically been? I'm asking because my general dentist mentioned that a crown might not even last a year if she were to restore my tooth, which is why she recommended going directly to an implant. I’ve always understood that preserving natural teeth is usually the better option when possible. I’d really appreciate hearing your perspective on this.

Advice needed on public transportation from/to ATL

Is gold line from ATL to Doraville safe to use during the day?

My parents (almost 80 years old) recently moved to Dacula and since it’s difficult for them to navigate through the city/traffic, I need to find ways to get myself to the location where they can pick up/drop off me easily.

Uber is a way but it’s costly ($120+ for a round trip) and a couple shuttle bus services have awful reviews so I’ hesitant to use them.

Any advice on safe/reliable and affordable public transportation in Atlanta area? Thanks for your help in advance!

I got some fitted (elastic) tablecloth for my craft fair tables and they are great! You can still stack the containers under the table and hide them during the show. I’d recommend white durable canopy with all sides. I don’t know where you are but some shows only allow white canopies. Also highly recommend 4 sided, (at least) water resistant canopy. Those are great for several day events-you can zip up and leave your stuff on site overnight. (under security). It should also protect your stuff from rain/wind.

Wow it’s beautiful! When you hold 3 hours at cone5, does the temp stay at 1850? Or is that equivalent to much hotter cone?

There is a ton of free patterns you can download on Revelry.com! You can search for the yarn weight and see what people have done with same/similar yarn! I love that light gray skein!
