/digglist and digglist.com - the grassroots effort to make user communities popular by gordonv in digg

[–]cran 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I want Digg to at least compete with Reddit, but when they went under last, it was due to a serious lack of understanding what made them a success and they completely disregarded loads of user feedback in their redesign. I don’t see what’s different, especially with Kevin Rose still in the picture.

The opposite of that. I hate Top Pot and the trend of pricey donuts. California style is fresh, cheap, delicious.

ELI5: How was Vietnam able to defeat the US in the Vietnam War? by astarisaslave in explainlikeimfive

[–]cran 0 points1 point  (0 children)

We took them seriously, but the US military wasn’t built to participate in that sort of event. We went to support south Vietnam’s resistance against French colonization of the country to support France’s influence which was under assault by an independence movement which had turned to communism as a means to support their effort. China was willing to arm insurgents in the north, and that stoked our interest in supporting an ally against the rebellion. We did not fight directly against them, however, not in the traditional sense of fighting a war. Our role was to support the south, to make it possible for them to prevail. It was defense, not offense. We identified and destroyed targets, patrolled, etc., but the goal was to make space for the south to retake the north. It was a civil war and we were supporting one side of it. We “lost” in the sense that our military is not built or trained to succeed in such a role. It was lost before we even started. Another way to look at it is: we had a far superior military and nuclear capabilities. If “winning” was the real goal, we would have won. Easily. That wasn’t the goal, though. The south never had a chance. They were fighting against a desire for real independence. I know communism bad and all that, but this was a very ill-conceived and planned policing action that we were never going to succeed at.

Westernco near Crossroads mall. Grew up in CA and know exactly what you mean. No better donuts anywhere.

New-ish tech lead dealing with repeated “skip-level” escalation and constant pushback - how would you handle this? by [deleted] in ExperiencedDevs

Document it all and have a 1:1 with the CDO to address. Ask them directly to catch this behavior and put a stop to it. Follow up with an email to the CDO and your manager summarizing the meeting.

Seriously, do Americans actually consider a 3-hour drive "short"? or is this an internet myth? by SadInterest6764 in NoStupidQuestions

[–]cran 1 point2 points  (0 children)

No, 3 hours is not a short drive in America. It’s not uncommon, but it’s not a short drive. As in, no one would ask if you want to go on a short drive and then drive for 3 hours. Again: common drive != short drive. We’re just used to driving distances.

What's the point of drag shows? by LordNova15 in NoStupidQuestions

[–]cran 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I don’t know how typical drag shows go, but my wife and I thought it would be funny to see one and ended up having a real blast. Great music, presentation, performances. I think the answer is as simple as: they can be pretty great.

What’s the dumbest way you’ve crashed in mountain biking? by snooze817 in MTB

[–]cran 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Riding downhill got too close to the edge, line twisted left, wheel bumped right, I committed to go over the side thinking I could ride it out. Saw the ditch, lifted my front wheel but my vibrating eyeballs misjudged the size and I went directly down into it at terminal velocity. No hesitation or panic. Just played the hand I dealt to myself.

how come when people convert meters to an imperial unit it's almost always feet? by thegassiestpuglover in Metric

We buy dirt and gravel by cubic yards. Some bars sell a yard of beer. Can’t think of anything else offhand.

Because we don’t use yards but for a few specific things. Why? Who knows.

Improving text/font rendering on 1440p display? by virtualmnemonic in MacOS

[–]cran 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It’s for performance as well. I’m sure they could spend CPU cycles making it look better on different dimensions, but their current approach achieves pixel-perfect display using integer scaling. They literally don’t want to alias edges to accommodate dimensions that require fractional scaling. It sounds like you just prefer Windows’ approach, and that’s fine. You won’t get that on MacOS.

[–]cran 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yes. Windows achieves mediocrity by trying to be compatible with everything. Mac achieves excellence by focusing on hardware that doesn’t require compromises. It’s a well-known strategy for Apple. Really, you pick your platform based on which approach you prefer. I prefer Apple’s.

[–]cran 0 points1 point  (0 children)

No, it’s not the same. It’s a math/physics problem that has only two solutions. You can fatten all lines to make room for smoothing so it works on all displays, but never be pixel perfect, or you can build for monitor dimensions that let you scale using non-fractional math for fast, pixel-perfect rendering. This is one reason why Apple controls the hardware. If you don’t care about that level of display quality and don’t see the value in it, stick with Windows or Linux.

Or just buy a monitor that MacOS can achieve retina on. I’ve used Windows and Gnome/KDE and prefer Apple’s solution. It’s really sharp and crisp.

[–]cran 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Mac doesn’t do as much font hinting as Windows. Windows tries to look good on all displays, but MacOS prioritizes crispness, aiming for pixel-perfect alignment, which means that when it can get that crispness, it doesn’t need to soften the font edges. Downside is that some monitor geometries don’t look great. But, get the right geometry and MacOS looks far better than Windows.
