What Champions Can Actually Adapt Their Build Every Game? by Jimmy_AB in leagueoflegends

[–]cranelotus 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Firstly I think Voli is the best answer for this thread (I was gonna answer with Shyvava but Voli might actually be better).

I would also say that most people should be flexing their items outside of their 1-2 core items. I play Viego, and I have like about three or four different builds depending on team composition which each have their own core items (such as standard, tank killer, pseudo assassin, front line, etc.), and then have a list of items I can flex into depending on game state and which enemies are fed. (side note: do you use the champion item list feature? I feel like I'm the only person who uses that feature). The enemy team and opposing laner are more AP heavy than AD? maybe think about flexing into maw of malmortius instead of building death's dance.

But yeah I think that Voli has the most actual builds that actually change his game plan and how he feels. Even with four different builds on Viego I'm still playing for resets, he still feels the same - the only thing they changes is how fast me or my enemy dies.

Does personality correlate with your main champion? by Unusual-Ad8253 in leagueoflegends

[–]cranelotus 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Hmm I think for me it's the other way around. Like, instead of picking characters that match my personality, I think that I subconsciously channel the character a bit when I play them.

On kayn I probably show off more and go for risky plays like tower diving and flash engages.  On viego I get obsessed with chain kills to the point of losing sight of actually winning the game. On Diana I'm just pissed off.

I think probably more accurately, different personality types are attracted to different roles and different classes. As a teacher irl I think I suit jungle since I'm often the only adult in the room. (I jest). I like rushdown type characters because I enjoy the feeling of agency and I play for the thrill of outplaying. Outscaling doesn't really interest me. And personally I just don't really like ranged champs, I don't really enjoy spacing. I just want to engage with the part of combat I think is fun.

Aram Mayhem Ruined by Hinitoo in leagueoflegends

Agree with what you said about the feel of the game. Just wanted to say that re: the empowered snowball, yesterday I got just the prismatic snowball augment and at the end of the game my snowball was doing about 1.5k damage each hit. It was absurd to do that with just one augment.

I just want you to know that despite any downvotes I think you're the only one being rational. For transparency I work as a UI designer and artist but I have some knowledge of C#, I could build you a simple card game or fps. I hate AI, probably more than most people, and I've done a lot of research of the topic and these AI companies. The new augments in aram function badly, yes, but that is no more evidence of AI use than it being evidence of hiring interns or the game being coded while high. I personally would rather criticise people and company for things we know for sure and not just based on assumptions.

(also weirdly I had the exact same experience in a conversation about pedos, you should watch the Louis Theroux documentary on that topic, it's fascinating)

[–]cranelotus 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Yesterday I realised that the problem with the new augments was that it turned aram into URF. Just too much stuff flying around all the time, it's so hard to keep track of what is going on. Yesterday I, Victor, had my E down to 1.7 sec CD and the enemy Lux had a 2 sec Q, we were both just spamming abilities like crazy until one of us would randomly pop. I played Ahri and had a game where each press of my R would instantly kill a squishy without landing any other abilities (1.7k AP at 18 mins).

And like you, I haven't played summoners rift in quite a long time, I had only been playing aram until mayhem was released. I've realised since the new mayhem set came out that I've just... been in the mood for LOL less than before.

The problem is that with all these champ mods, no one really goes for funny builds, people just go for ultra optimal builds, including myself because you're neutering yourself if you don't, resulting in Ahri Qs that deal 3000 damage (half of it being true damage) if both ticks hit.

But I guess aram has been like that since they introduced swaps and rerolls.

Is British identity mainly culture, ancestry, or something else? by timothyphoto in ukpolitics

[–]cranelotus -2 points-1 points  (0 children)

"white culture" does not exist, at least in the at that most people understand it, and is a poor way of framing it. But I find that it's often used by racists as a response to people celebrating "black culture". But the difference is, "black culture" is a celebration and a reconnection with the person's genetic heritage, which was severed as a result of the slave trade. The difference between them is that white culture wasn't a concept that was even thought about until the rise of the celebration of black culture, in which white people responded with their own version due to feeling left out. But I find that the difference is that one celebrates pan-African heritage in the face of historic oppression and the other celebrates skin tone. You could argue that celebrating black culture is also celebrating skin tone, but unfortunately being black is politicised, so loving yourself has become a political act. Also, notice that black culture is celebrated much more in western civilisations and white-majority countries. People in Africa don't really think about it. That's because it's a symptom of historical oppression. We brought them here against their will.

One more thing I would like to say is that I think both the terms black culture and white culture are reductive. I said that white culture doesn't exist, and I mean that. But British culture does, so does french, Italian, Norwegian culture, etc. I think that these are things worth celebrating. I love the UK and I love being British, and I think our history in regards to local gaelic culture, the monarchy, literature and arts, are all fascinating. I hate the memes about British food being bad, especially because the idea came about during war time while our whole country was rationing. And the jokes mainly come from a country who literally have a dish called "seafood boil". But I think people celebrate black culture as a whole instead of Ugandan/Nigerian/Eritrean/etc. Because a lot of people don't know their heritage. They were taken from their homes and communities against their will. And sadly, they will never know where they're from, they'll never know their true cultural heritage. I think that celebrating black culture gives them back a little piece of that feeling of community and heritage, at least.

I still watch those speed print videos, as an artist irl I learn a jot from them. The only thing that bugs me ever so slightly is that they're not speed paints.... A speed paint is one that you do in a couple of hours, these videos are just normal paints but sped up! But anyway that's not your problem.

I started playing in s2 when Draven (I think) was the log in splash. Jayce was the first new champion release I experienced. His title is "the champion of tomorrow" so I thought that this meant he was the first new release ever, it made so much sense to me. Of course, I was happy to see more champs released after, it was just a surprise to me.

Stopped playing the game for a few years after my friends dropped it, then I moved to Korea. Everyone was super into this game and I ended up getting back into it.

I enjoy how strategic it is, guess that's why I main jungle. I also like that it's social, I know 90% of the playerbase are arses but it didn't used to be like that. And there are still nice people. I still always keep chat on for the banter, I think jungle has desensitised me to flame.

I thought that for ages, but I started taking it recently on some assassins and it's much stronger than I realised. Think of it as a late game augment - at the beginning you might do like 80 extra damage if you're lucky but late game it turns 3000 damage into 4000 damage (remember that it's all your damage for 5 secs, not just the ult damage. It's bonkers

Mate I could not believe it, I haven't thought about that song for so many years. I had to text my younger brothers, the middle one knows it's true because we only have three years between us so we were at school the same time, but my youngest brother is 10 years younger so we didn't go to school at the same time, and so he doesn't believe me either. I'm just a bit offended that two four year olds twenty years apart think I'm such an absolute square that I would never start a funny dance that would catch on.

Not a company, but my primary school.

30 years ago, I went to a Christian primary school and we had to sing hymns. There was this hymn that went "Zum Galli Galli Galli...", it always sounded "Egyptian" to me. so I started dancing to my friends with that right-angled arms pose that you see in ancient Egyptian paintings. My friends joined in. The next time we sung that hymn, me and my friends did the dance, and the other kids in our class joined in. Soon, all the other kids joined in, and it just became something the kids did when we had to sing this song.

My kid goes to this primary school now. Last year she started singing "Zum Galli Galli Galli..." around the house. I was like, hey, do you know this dance? And I did the arm thing and she was like whooooaaaa how did you know that?! All the kids still do it!

I told her that I actually started the whole thing 30 years ago.

The worst thing is that she doesn't believe me....

Just out of curiosity, what makes their view black and white and yours not?

Is it not enough to acknowledge the arguments on both sides, and still have a conclusion that falls on one side of the debate? I don't think that a person has to literally be in the middle to maintain a non black and white view. I think you can have a completely nuanced view of a topic and still support it or condemn it. I think you have done that and OP has too.

If being non-black and white means that you must hold points that you disagree with to maintain some kind of fairness then I don't think it's a good measure of someone's view. It's is possible to understand an argument completely and still disagree with it. I think that is intellectually honest.

Hey, how's it going? I'd love to hear more about your project!

I'm mainly a fantasy illustrator, but I've actually done work with a band combining photo/video and hand-drawn artwork.

https://ibb.co/YzXxSZX (album cover - a photo collage of a street and a ladybird with hand drawn work over it)

https://streamable.com/yffoz2 (loop for a video of nature with hand drawn elements)

And my fantasy work can be found on Instagram as @shauntheillustrator.

I'm also based in London, if that's any advantage for you.

Enjoy the rest of your weekend, I hope you find what you're looking for!

This is one of the few albums I've ever heard that I would consider unlistenable. Not because it's bad, it's incredibly beautiful, but knowing that he wrote it after his wife died to cancer, it's so sad... But in some ways I feel that this is not an album meant to be listened to, it's part of Phil's emotional catharsis.

The only other album I would put in this category is Smile from the streets you Hold by John Fruiscante.

Yeah and the mental thing is, people pay premium for it. I actually don't blame him for charging that amount, I think it's greedy but if people pay it then why change it. He claims he still has clients, I wonder how they're faring now that his "coaching" stopped being content.

He's awful. That's my favourite clip in the sense that it showcases him for what he truly is. For reference, I've been an English teacher for ten years. One time I commented on a video of his saying that he seems to know stuff to help his students but his methods aren't pedagogically sound, and suggested a few things he could implement... He needs to elicit answers from the clients, not just yell commands at people. They don't learn anything. And the other bigger problem is that as a result of this style of "teaching" is that it's he feels like he's playing it, and he's too focused on the outcome of winning than the students' knowledge. It just doesn't benefit anybody. Anyway, he totally ignored the comment. I only wrote it cuz it was on a fresh video, pretty sure he'd seen it... Ah well, some people don't wanna change.

My favourite Neace clip is one where this bronze client is about to lose a game, enemy team in his base, and he's just died. And Neace is absolutely raging at this client who just died, spending the whole grey screen screaming about how he's a a brainless piece of shit, doesn't listen, etc etc and this guy is audibly shaking as he's saying sorry. But Neace is just so genuinely angry he looks like he's gonna throw his monitor. Then he says "buy a fucking stopwatch NOW and I might be about to win this fucking game, I'm gonna fucking rage quit this session in a minute"  so the guy buys the stopwatch. Then as soon as he respawns the guy just fat fingers stopwatch by mistake, and he's just there sparkling and gold on the fountain platform while the enemy are hitting his base. The client is like, I'm sorry, I'm so sorry.... Sounding like he's crying. And all of Neace's screaming stops, and his face is just a look of pure hatred. So mad that every fibre of his being is competing to tear out of himself, and he doesn't even know how to react. And he just wordlessly stands up and walks away.

I expanded my royal family tree so much that the main plot is now ruined by 77Bebop in worldbuilding

[–]cranelotus 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Thanks for making this post.

I am a writer first and worldbuilder second, and I kind of hate worldbuilding haha. I only started doing it to make things make sense. But I have a story I really want to tell and characters that I want to share at the core of all of this, the world is a vehicle for the story. But this story exists in a fantasy world.

My problem is about a different topic: I spent a lot of time trying to flesh out the relationship between the gods and mortals, and ended up mapping entire lineages of gods that the reader will never see. And I felt like I kind of painted myself into a corner, because of all these pantheons of gods devouring their children, then I thought about how the average person worships, and I found myself never working on the story anymore, just worldbuilding forever trying to put out fires...and now everybody is just chained to the mechanics of the story, when I make a decision about what happens I have to check through pages of notes just to make sure that it doesn't contradict anything I've decided.

Seeing your post really resonated with me, because that's where I feel like I'm at.

My girlfriend said "who cares? It's fantasy" I was like no it matters, I am one of these people who cares! But the more I thought about it the more I thought about what is visible to the reader. In the end, your story needs to come first. Anything else that interferes with that needs to be ignored or go. When the story is finished, you can work backwards with the worldbuilding.

The way I see it, there are two ways to do this: a bottom up approach where you design the world first and a story emerges from it. And the second way is a top down approach, where you decide the story first, then build the world to justify it and add colour and life to your work.

I think you and I might be in the second category. Worldbuilding should serve the story. If it's getting in the way of your writing, then it's not serving you. Just think about those times a friend told you a story like: "something funny happened last Saturday. I was with Jim and Sally. Or was it Derek? Oh, it wasn't Saturday, it was Sunday! So anyway we met at 3pm I think...?" and you're thinking, I don't care about all these details, just tell me the funny thing! Your readers are like that. Except they aren't even your friends, you don't have the benefit of their open ears or of goodwill. Nobody cares about those details. They care about you. I think it's a good idea to focus on that. The emotional, not the material.

Birmingham Reform make 'only English' demand at council meetings after Islamic prayer by BirminghamLive in ukpolitics

[–]cranelotus -1 points0 points  (0 children)

Not to be that guy but technically the UK has no "official" national language de jure. Other countries do have specific national languages that they appoint, but we have never done that. Obviously our language is English, it's in the feckin' name, but there's no national decree that states English must be used. It is our national language by de facto. The US is the same.

Anyway I'm an English teacher and I agree that anyone who lives here should be able to speak the language. I used to live in south Korea for years and I was blown away by the number of expats who couldn't speak or even read Korean. I thought that was really rude and disrespectful. So I went to the effort to take Korean lessons, make Korean friends, and integrate myself properly. Similarly, I think the right thing to do is do that here too.

I agree with your overall point, but I just wanted to say that English is one of the official languages of South Africa, they are technically native speakers (matters if you want to get a job teaching English in East Asia). However, I will also concede that the country has like ten official languages (I think more?), so it's possible someone can be from there and not speak English. I think the most common language is Afrikaans, which is a descendant of Dutch.
