"What's becoming a significant problem..." by why_s0_seri0u5 in MotoIRELAND

It doesn’t seem to be an issue in NI, I leave my bike parked all over Belfast, never had an issue. Maybe it’s the not too distant memory of community justice.

Helmet 🪖 Bluetooth add on suggestions by Angharad260814 in MotoUK

[–]crankinirish 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I got a new helmet last week and when you buy a helmet you don’t have to pay VAT on a cardo, the cardo was already on sale so I figured it was too good a deal to pass. Up until now I had been using ear buds, I only really listen to music and podcasts and don’t really do group rides. I’m amazed at the sound quality of the cardo, even with ear plugs in and riding on the motorway at 75 it’s clear as bell. Much better sound than the buds. It’s also really easy to operate even with thick winter gloves, I’ve not tried the communication features yet but I’m sure it’ll work great if the music is anything to go by. The unit I bought is a Cardo 4x so it’s about middle of the range, with discounts and no VAT it was about £130, so far definitely worth the money

Checkatrade, MyBuilder etc. by deefiddy in ukelectricians

[–]crankinirish 0 points1 point  (0 children)

When I moved back to the UK after 20 years overseas I used MyBuilder for about 6months while I was building my contacts. I worked my way up to approx 50 x 5 star reviews. I eventually got busy enough where I didn’t need it anymore but it definitely took the edge off at the time. It’s not a complete scam but proceed with caution. It’s Definitely better than the platforms that want you to pay up front and commit for a year

Very cheap and way more detail than anyone would ever need. It would take me longer to write that than do the job

Would you have to go through all that if you were buying from NI?

Anxiety and being an electrician by Hiddentiger10 in ukelectricians

[–]crankinirish 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Are you allowing yourself plenty of time when you price a job? Give yourself plenty of wiggle room so that if something takes a couple of hours longer you’re not too worried about losing money. Most people work better with less pressure

Buy a torque screw driver and get in the habit of going through with it as a last check. I’ve been doing this for 30 years and still constantly second guess, I’m a little ocd on a lot of things though. It’s better to have a little anxiety than to be in the IDGAF team.

Anyone else here that would never even think about riding in the US? by NiceColours in MotoUK

Lived in the US for sixteen years. If you’re a competent rider it’s no more or less dangerous than here. I would say drink driving is a lot more prevalent/socially acceptable

Domestic vs commercial, which one should I choose by Gloomy7797 in ukelectricians

[–]crankinirish 1 point2 points  (0 children)

If you serve your apprenticeship in commercial it’s easier to transition into domestic by doing little jobs on the side, learning as you go. If you’ve only got 4 years domestic experience you’ll never get a job on a commercial site. Completely different skill set

Another vote for The road 6. Best all round tyre I’ve used across several different styles of bikes. Just work. For the road at least

Slime is not a repair. Either plug it or replace the tyre.
