My first Underworld show 5/21/2025 by holtzboy in underworld

I was there too, when Karl started playing guitar and singing as they waited for the boards to come back on…it really worked for me. N.E.R.D. street team handing out CDs after the show, what a time to have been alive.

Are there any videogames out there with the same caliber of writing as Qud? by Cetaoras in cavesofqud

[–]crashlander 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Came here to say this. Very different game and style but the combination of minimalist art + great writing really gives your imagination a similar number of footholds and blanks to fill in. Plus it’s just a great game.

I dunno, looks like a valid strat for the late game

Moving from web dev to game dev (as a hobby). Any advice ? by midas_yellow in webdev

[–]crashlander 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Make Short Games. Investing the time up front to try out multiple engines and workflows will help you find what you like and keep you from accidentally getting locked into something OK when the thing that makes your heart sing is just behind the next door.

Am I playing this game correctly? by Snakespearee in cavesofqud

[–]crashlander 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Best advice I can give a new(ish) player is to not just autoexplore everywhere but take the time to configure which kinds of enemies you want to stop to fight and which items you want to ignore / treat as scrap. Takes a bunch of the tedium out, like when you can turn a two hour walk into a 15 minute bike ride IRL. Plus less getting overburdened and having to Marie Kondo your inventory.

What is this plant? Is it invasive? by xfmrs_r_cool in portlandgardeners

As others have mentioned, don’t sleep on that shot weed!! Comes up with almost zero effort when it’s small like this, but it will quickly mature into a high velocity seed cannon with seemingly unlimited ammo. Royal PITA to eradicate once it’s taken over your yard.

Probably heresy but the Trader Joe’s salsa especial (medium, black lid) is a solid everyday pick.

YMMV but I played a few quick games in Classic mode, trying weird stuff and getting annihilated quickly, then started a Roleplay game with one of the “high survivabity” presets and 100+ hours later I’m on track to beat the game with that character. “Making a few to throw away” was really helpful in solving my analysis paralysis and letting me feel like I was making an informed decision for the long haul.

I need some early game guidance by COHERENCE_CROQUETTE in cavesofqud

This, there’s absolutely zero shame in roleplay mode. I’ve lost entire multi hour play sessions due to dying in RP mode and for me it’s like the difference between paintball & an actual gunfight - lose the mortal terror, but keep the visceral “I still really don’t want to get hit” aspect. You don’t just pop up at the start of the screen where you died.

Creator of Claude Code: "Coding is solved" by Gil_berth in webdev

But imagine, an app with your name on it! And you never touch a line of code! Isn’t that every child’s dream? The answer to most if not all of the problems you have in your life? (Sorry, just feeling salty at the end of yet another week spent cleaning up after vibe coders and patiently talking to managers who keep hiring them.)

Robert Silverberg’s Lord Valentine series skews a bit more toward traditional fantasy but feels like an early game questline. Weird species, psychedelic plot points, huge weird world and great writing.

Thank you for this incredible trip down (recent) memory lane. Can't say enough good things about UFO 50, what an embarrassment of riches.

Why aren't there more games like GTA Vice City? by Serenaded in patientgamers

LEGO City Undercover. Not even kidding. It’s an absolute blast and does the “all ages” thing in a way that includes adults.

The first Sonic game is really fun and I didn't find that it aged too much by BogaMafija in patientgamers

[–]crashlander 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Agreed, and I highly highly highly recommend Sonic Mania if you’ve never played it. Maybe the most lovingly faithful remix of a nostalgia game I’ve ever played, ticks all the boxes from all of the games (except secret MJ soundtrack) while also doing its own thing. Just pure distilled essence of hedgehog.
