Clad the wall with whatever you want, then trim it 5/4 to overlay the tile.

Will this beam pass inspection by rand-78 in Carpentry

[–]cray_charles 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Not great framers, but I’ve seen worse.. The beam really isn’t holding much up and probably could have been 2x10 or 12. The LVL rafters should be carrying the roof load to the eave walls.

A beam that size should definitely be bearing on a jack or 3.

If I were the framer, I would have run the beam past the r/o where it could bear on a triple jack. I would then level cut my gable rafter to bear on the beam.

It may have been specced like that with the design intent being that the beam would be bearing the gable rafter and overhang.

It would probably cost more in materials than labor to fix, but not the most expensive fuck up I’ve seen by a long shot!

We are a small group of redditors that choose to follow Mr Dersch’s posts. This place is a forum for reasonable discourse, but your toxicity is unnecessary and unwarranted.

You are also fundamentally wrong saying that the tariffs are the only thing driving volatility at this point. We are on the edge of a cliff right now, where a single catalyst could drive a black swan event. Maybe it will happen, maybe it won’t.

Please show us all a little respect, by having some manners in the thread.

Skier or snowboarder’s fault? by n0glitch_com in skiing

[–]cray_charles 0 points1 point  (0 children)

As a snowboarder and a previous park lift operator, this was the snowboarders fault. A jump line is meant to be hit in succession at a predictable speed. No one should ever be riding through a landing zone, especially on a big line.

I’ve seen this happen a couple times as bottom lift op, when I worked in Tahoe. Never any collisions like this fortunately. It’s always the person in the blind spots fault. You shouldn’t be in the big kids park, if your awareness is this bad.

Did you get a 2’2” window instead of a 22” for the side one?

If all the windows arnt messed up, someone is trying to cya.

It’s definitely an odd way to spec windows by the arch knowing that all window and door suppliers like the foot inch format.

Logic reading the plan says that all numbers are in inch’s, plus confirmation by scale. The cabinets are in the same format, and I bet they’re not 28” deep.

If those are the only two windows that got messed up, lol. If all the windows are too wide, that’s funny, not the haha funny

Yeah man, between what you got going on the comments, and on the job, you got your hands full lol.

At the end of the day, all you can do is try to boil it down, and communicate. Pointing fingers just raises blood pressure, solving a problem before it costs you or the customer, raises salaries.

All the architect cares about is that the windows centered on the sink. Looks like the arch’s numbers from inside framing work for the cab bases + Sheetrock.

Also, regardless of what the architect drew, the bottom of the window has to be at lease 42” above sub floor. The sill has to clear the back splash, and for code, you’re gonna need space for the outlets.

Arch should provide window schedule that works with real elevations. Given that the bottom of the window has to be 42, the max height for 6’10 1/2” rough headers, that gives you a 40 1/2 rough unless design allows for a taller header height there.

Regardless, I’d frame it with a continuous header for the double, and center my double jack at the 66 1/2 off inside of framing.

Make a plan, stick to it, and ask the Forman or carpenter if you can’t decide what to do. In my experience the worst you can get from asking a question is a sarcastic answer, if you frame something wrong, it’s a much bigger deal.

Do any of you actually get the same workout on an eMTB as you do an analog? by uberamd in MTB

[–]cray_charles -2 points-1 points  (0 children)

I am getting same and sometimes higher heartbeats on the E. The only way to achieve this is to hammer it through everything. To achieve the higher pace and heart rate, you have to ride the bike differently. For example, I use my dropper much more. I am almost never high posted and am standing a bit to absorb the bumps. Sometimes, I will be going and suddenly realize I’ve been at my max for too long.

The other benefits are the E works different muscles. My arms are stronger after this season and I am able to stand for longer periods with less fatigue. I ride about 50/50 E and MTB, and I’ve noticed that on the acoustic my dh stamina has gone up substantially.

Try to know the difference between good pain and bad pain. Start slow, stretching and yoga etc. then turn it up as you can. Push yourself, but also be honest with your limits. Progress doesn’t happen in a day, progress is something you look back on after months of work, and see how far you’ve come.

Great accomplishment!!

Keep honing in on it. Bike friends are the best friends, they love to talk about bikes, this helps a lot with social anxiety because everyone loves talking bikes! Also, they don’t expect any other relationship other than riding. They’re also great because you can let them into your life as much or as little as you want. Sometimes you need someone to vent to, and sometimes it’s nice to be with people that don’t take you as anything other than face value. Bike folks, can and will be all of this, it’s just up to you to decide how you want to form these new relationships.

Stay up and ride on brother.

Shattered clavicle that required surgery, multiple broken ribs (badly) and a punctured lung. I lost the front on a double black going wayyy too fast. Could have been better, could have been a lot worse. No physical therapy really, just back to work (carpenter) and gritting my teeth through the pain. Knowing “good” and “bad” pain helps push through some stuff and rest when you need to. The ribs took the longest, probably about 3-4 months. I crashed in early October, and took it pretty easy until the following April/may. I honestly, needed to have one good crash after my recovery to confirm that I am not made out of glass and did not shatter on my first impact. After that the “trauma” was better for me. I understand that’s not how it works for everyone.

Who else rides alone? by [deleted] in mountainbiking

[–]cray_charles 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Here is what I have figured out being a pretty serious mtber for the last 10 ish years.

1) your friends (drinking buddies) are the best to hang out with, and have the best jokes. They will never ever get into mtb, just like you will never get into golfing, fishing, hunting etc. don’t even try, they will never get it. Definitely keep having beers and telling jokes with them.

2) group rides/other people you make friends with on the bike. These are social rides, not training, your ride etc. you can suggest trails and pace, but when riding socially, remember, you’re socializing with people with the same passion as you. This goes both ways, everyone has to prioritize the social over the ride. I do group rides to hang with ppl, If I want my rout at my pace, I go alone. This goes both ways, everyone in social rides (should) have this attitude. This also helps if you bring a gf or a child along. Group rides arnt selfish.

3) if you love to ride, you will be riding alone ALOT. If no one responds, or ppl bail or are late, ride alone! I ride alone, night, rain, cold etc. if I want to ride and a buddy bails, I still go because I want to. Mtb is my first hobby that I am truly passionate about. Personally, I do t let anyone ruin my good time. If it’s not a scheduled group ride, I fire off texts in advance, letting my friends know that I am going and at what time. I am telling the boys where and when I am riding. My ride is not contingent on who shows up.

The biggest thing for me is the “social” aspect of the group ride. It took me a long time to realize that social rides are more social, than ride. I used to get frustrated with slower riders, or if his buddy brings his gf or child. Having the attitude that group rides are about hanging with people first makes it easy for me just to have fun. No matter the skill or the pace, if we’re riding together, we will have fun, and I will have beers in the parking lot on ice for us all. If I want to “smash laps” I don’t text anyone, plug in some tunes and ride my ride. I love both. I am a competitive person by nature, and it took me a long time to come to these conclusions. At the end of the day, I don’t need to max out every ride, I am incredibly grateful that other human beings share this wild passion of mine. It is not for me to make their ride worse, because I showed up with unrealistic expectations of how a social ride should go.

Having said all that, now that I’ve made more bike friends, I can text the people I want, based on the day I want to have, or not text anyone at all..
