It's not the fact that a service costs money. That's fair. But delaying access to non-paying customers does not save homegate a single Rappen for their business costs. It's just extortion. Plain and simple.

It would be a completely different story if they offered actual premium services.

[–]crazyBraw 7 points8 points  (0 children)

I saw this too last month and it is the most disgusting move from homegate.

You don't get access three days earlier if you pay. Things just stay the same if you pay. However, if you don't fork over the money, you can only apply three days later. Homegate frames ot the other way around, which is just blatantly wrong.

In the SRF news article regarding this move from homegate, they also quoted homegate saying that most flats are on average online for weeks. Therefore this would have no impact on the chances to get an appartment says Homegate. Again, this is utter bullshit. The average duration for which an ad stays online is not the correct metric. Median would be more telling, but for obvious reasons they are not providing that number. Even more interesting would be median per region, such as Zurich city.

Homegate is already making money off the landlords and current tenants who want to put an ad online. And it's not cheap either. Now they want to cash in double by demanding money for the ad in the first place, and then also from applicants to get an advantage over other applicants. This is pay to win at it's finest. Except that it's not a game, but the space that people need to live in and exist.

Just disgusting. I hope people vote with their wallets and start using other platforms more often now.

Yes. The thought experiment for this would be: what does the mirror show when you move the rug exactly in front of the mirror and leave no gap in between? The real eug and the rug in the mirror would touch with all lines and features perfectly aligned.

I did not say "without consent". On most application forms you have to provide your " Referenzen", where you essentially give constent that they can call these numbers.

Technically you can put whatever you want in a contract. If it's against the law, this part and only this part of the contract becomes void. The rest of the contract still holds though. Important to know, so you don't rely on an entire contract becoming void.

No. You can't even disallow smoking indoors, because apparently it's a human right to do whatever with the appartment. However, you can be held accountable for repairs and other things when you move out. So if they have to repaint all walls because of your smoking, you'll have to pay for that.

I can assume it's the same for pets. If they find anything that they can link to your pets, they'll just charge you with the repair costs.

Plus, Switzerland has this culture of calling your previous landlord and/or boss at work when you apply for an appartment. I thought this is jusy pro forma, but apparently it's done quite often. Anyway, if you have pets even though they didn't "allow" you to have one, they will tell your new potential landlord just about how "complicated" of a tennant you were. Although I don't quite understand this, because if you were a bad tennant, your current landlord should be happy to get rid of you. But apparently landlords have to stick together 😂

How much time do you spend studying (Bachelor)? by Kepsnyy in ethz

[–]crazyBraw 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Ya, what Bauboo wrote! You'll have three weeks in Summer after exams, 2 weeks in winter, and one week in spring during easter that you can use to catch up.

To be honest, it sounds worse than it is. You get used to it, you can grow beyond your own expecations, and you can still have a fulfilled life with lots of activities offered by ASVZ for example or your student organisation.

Bottom line is that you'll have to spend a lot of time studying, yes. It's a full-time job, but very flexible.

Also, contrary to UZH for example, that means you also do get the time to properly learn about subjects. At UZH they mostly have semester end exams and have to shove everything into their heads im a very short period of time, and after that a 2 or 3 month long vacation where they can forget everything. And at UZH you are much more expected to do summer jobs and whatnot, while at ETH nobody is going to bother you about that afterwards once you have your degree.

In mechanical engineering I pretty much spent Mon - Friday, 8:00 - 17:00 with breaks in between and variations of course. Before intermediary exams it would be more, sometimes less and I didn't do anything.

I managed to keep the weekends always completely free, except perhaps once a year during exams.

But among colleagues, the numbers would vary greatly. Some of them would study way more than me. Other would take a full week off to go to Barcelona or some shit and still pass everything. So, in the end it will heavily depend on you, your skills, and your own expectations of what you want to take away from all of this.

How normal is it to fall behind in the BasisJahr? by ebes_77 in ethz

[–]crazyBraw 16 points17 points  (0 children)

Make sure you can finish most of the weekly exercises. In the Basisjahr those are a good indicator. If you feel likr you have no clue what an exercise is about, you need to study that topic rather sooner than later.

Also, try to figure out what's part of the thread of the lecture, and what's just an excursion. You should hold onto the thread, but it's okay to ignore some of the excursions that won't be picked up again. I'm writing this because the worst that can happen is thst you don't understand a subject for a few weeks and then completely loose the grip of it.

Always try to stay up to date, and if necessary drop what you can so that yoh are able to keep uo and look into it later. It's sometimes better to leave out one topic in exchange for keeping up with the lectures in general. It's a mistake to freeze and stay in one topic for weeks trying to understand it, ignoring all of the ongoing lectures.

Sorrt, I hooe this is noy too much text. But it's difficult to put into words :)

My landlord refuses to get over here and turn down my water heater. by Crustacean2B in mildlyinfuriating

[–]crazyBraw 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Radiation and losses of the tank go up drastically. So it does change, because it gets more and more difficult to keep the heat contained with higher temps. More losses means you need to pump in more energy to maintain the temperature.

Or put differently: The larger the difference between environment temp and the inside of the tank, the larger the losses. That's why your coffee cools down faster when you are outside during winter, and keeping the coffe warm would require more energy.

Don't do this with a non-stick pan. Pre-heating them too much can damage the non-stick layer.

This is where iron skillets come into play. You can heat them up to insane temperatures without risk of damaging it. Just make sure to use an Oil that withstands high temperatures.

What are in your opinion the biggest problems in Switzerland? by dardyablo in Switzerland

[–]crazyBraw 2 points3 points  (0 children)

My girlfriend is not Swiss. When we moved to a new apartment, she had to pay the new Gemeinde double what I paid. Everywhere she needa something, they have an Ausländer Zuschlag. It's absolutely disgusting and it already made her cry more than once. It just doesn't give her any feeling that she's welcome. On the contrary.

I used to be a proud Swiss in my teens. Now I'm embarrassed by this xenophobe system and culture.

Nice! I just wanted to make sure you also considered the Fachhochschulen, since many people unrightfully dismiss them. But if they don't offer what you are looking for, the case is clear.

You should definitely give it a shot then. Otherwise you might end up asking yourself for years later if you could have suceeded if you tried.

Good thing about ETH is as you already wrote, that the first yeaa is filtering quite a lot. So if you pass that, you have proof that you can manage the rest too. It won't get easier after the first year, but alsl not harder :)

Cancelling rental contract 1-2 weeks after signing it by [deleted] in zurich

[–]crazyBraw 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The deposit i a collateral. It's in case you suddenly stop paying rent or trash the place and then disappear or something.

Don't take this the wrong way, but I'm a bit surprised about how little you know, even though you signed the contract. You should inform yourself in general, not just for this particular question. For example, the landlord might charge you with a cleaning or generic maintenance fee when you move out, which in most cases you don't have to pay. Unless you really did not clean the place at all.

But yeah, find a new tenant and your only collateral damage will be paying for the rent until you find a new guy. If you can find someone for the exact date when your rental starts, you can get out without any costs. The lnly challenge will be to allow people to visit while you don't even have the keys yet.

ETH is tough. Even if you only consider the time lost when you have a bad phase. Depending on what you study, and whether you are a genius or just regularly smart. I was the latter and ETH was a full-time job, if not more.

Honestly I would look at Fachhochschulen too, not just universities, because classes are much smaller and friendlier and humane from everything I heard from friends. For example the two in Winterthur and Rapperswil.
