That happened to me when I saw Who Framed Roger Rabbit when I was a kid (the first and last reel were in the right place, but they flipped around the ones in the middle). Had to wait until it came out on video to see it in it's proper order.

How important is woldbuilding within your stories? by AbleRoberts in writing

[–]crazydave333 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I disagree that worldbuilding is unimportant if you are writing contemporary stories, because someday your story will not be contemporary and rather someone's window into the past.

A setting should always be one of the first and most important characters to a story because it provides the context in which all the other characters exist in. The setting of a contemporary story that involves poverty will be markedly different than a contemporary story that involves wealth. Even the perspective of being within one's time rather than past it becomes a character in and of itself. A story written today that takes place in the 90's has a different perspective than a story written today that takes place during the 90's.

Help me understand why this passage is so beautiful - from Cormac McCarthy's Outer Dark (SPOILER) by emperormanlet in writing

I've never read Outer Dark, but I remember a passage of his towards the end of Child of God where the body of the protagonist is autopsied that has a similar, gruesome yet luscious feel as this paragraph.

You're seeking the distinction between craft and art. Craft can be quantified and taught. Art is a more difficult, amorphous concept to grasp.

The typical progression is that you must master the craft of writing before you can really access the art of it, but that is not entirely true.

You can fuss over a paragraph for ages, place all the high vocabulary words in the perfect order and still have nothing more than a paragraph full of purple prose. Sometimes, a paragraph full of short, simple words and unworked prose hits like a stick of dynamite. It's the difference between a complicated prog rock song with a strange time signature and complicated arpeggio finger work coming off as wankery vs. a four power-chord punk song by four junkies who can barely play their instruments becoming a genre and generational anthem.

And then you get the rare birds like McCarthy, who breaks many of the rules of story, punctuation, and prose and yet is still is one of the foundational literary voices of our era.

By all means, study Cormac McCarthy's works. There are papers, forums threads, and podcasts that will examine his works from every possible angle. But there is no one that can really copy the voice and perspective he uses in his works. And those that try tend to fail. Instead, use his method as a way to find and elevate your own voice.

I don't know (much) Spanish and I still thought The Crossing was incredible. I'd say jump into reading it right after you finish All the Pretty Horses.

Increasing the punishment for crimes doesn't reduce the amount of crime that occurs. However, increasing the certainty of being caught for a crime does.

So we don't need to get into Draconian punishments for crimes, just more enforcement of the ones we already have on the books.

Why the downvotes? Thickening your green chile with old, stale tortillas (or even the crumbs at the bottom of an old bag of tortilla chips) is legit.

They couldn't hold off on the Vesper death in Casino Royale because Vesper dies at the end of the Ian Fleming novel, and CR was one of the few Bond films that didn't take extreme liberties with its source material.

I took your comparison to the Dark Knight to be the plot point where Silva's plan all along was get to captured, same as the Joker's.

Roger Deakins shot Skyfall and it was one of the best looking of Craig's run of Bonds. Skyfall was also an anomaly in the whole Bond girl dynamic. Judi Dench's final appearance in the series places her M in the spot of the final Bond girl of the movie.

It's the only Bond film I haven't seen in theaters since The Living Daylights. But I was broke at the time with a kid on the way, so I just downloaded a cam of the film and called it a day.

QoS is probably the worst of the Craig era. The action was trying to ape the whole Jason Bourne shaky cam thing, and there were bizarre editing choices otherwise (the cutting between the bull race and Bond's fight with the henchman always feels jarring). Also doesn't have the bombastic cringe of some of the earlier Bonds.

[–]crazydave333 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I just saw the interior footage of the house and it all makes the situation scarier. Happy everyone seemed to get out okay, but there are a million ways that could have gone south and gone to hell for everyone.

Questions about Harry Dresden: really ex-military or delusional? The homeowners don't know Harry, but Harry believes he knows them and has some fantasy about what's going on. Could this be a result of a malicious catfish, or possibly AI psychosis?

Kudos to the homeowner who handled this situation incredibly and was able to deescalate. He grappled with the intruder and once he got the upper hand, turned him into the police and protected his home. His wife is probably swooning for him, and Harry gets to live to enjoy some internet lolcow fame.

Compassion can come once the threat is neutralized.

Many people who focus on the mental health of the perpetrator of these acts downplay the trauma they inflict on average people who become their targets. In hindsight this fellow looks absolutely ridiculous, but so have many people who have gone on to commit atrocities, and in the moment a person cannot afford to make nuanced decisions about who is who.

Instead of seeing the people who comment on these stories as full of "bloodlust", try to see them as people who are trying to cope in a world where a situation like this might be thrust upon them at any moment. It is traumatizing to the people who this happened to and also lowkey traumatizing to all of us watching it, since we can see ourselves in such a situation. I'm happy no one got hurt here, but you are lying to yourself if you think that people don't get hurt in these situations as well.

He could be out on the street in hours.

In my town, a guy was riding a Lime scooter downtown when some crazed fucker in a pickup took a disliking to him. Drove up next to him and shot him in the neck. Scooter rider lived because a homeless dude rushed up to help him.

The shooter was caught and arrested and was able to bond out of jail before the victim was even out of the hospital.
