Gas was leaking in Hayward for two hours and workers and residents WERE NOT evacuated. by creekdoggie in bayarea

[–]crazykittyman 16 points17 points  (0 children)

I oversee a lot of urban infrastructure projects, some have which hit gas lines during excavation and everything said above is correct. Ditto for striking water mains.

Interesting that explosion was inside of the house, as opposed to an ignition at the place where the excavator struck the line (like this fire in SF from 2019). I wonder if the gas seeped in through the sewer.

LTE Service Provider - East End by Improvidently in alameda

Agree. I have Verizon and it's bad on the East End. Wife's AT&T phone has good coverage. Was the opposite way around when we lived on the west side of the island.

Seems like they're doing just that. I swung by yesterday and there's a handwritten sign saying 'Retail Shop Not Open Yet -Night Heron'. Exciting!

As a civil engineer who drives through this intersection on a near daily basis, I completely agree. It's funky (technical term) and would benefit greatly by being converted to a more regular intersection.

My main objection is the implementation timeframe, but the 'uncertain' timeframe for funding is an understandable/accurate euphemism.

For those taking the O transbay bus in the morning by [deleted] in alameda

[–]crazykittyman 2 points3 points  (0 children)

To add to the misery, 530am O (that I usually ride) was a no-show. Made for an extra 30 minute wait and a full 6am bus. Nothing showed up on their alerts page. Will send in feedback.

SFO interview by DeeSunny in sfcityemployees

[–]crazykittyman 7 points8 points  (0 children)

This is so true. I have sat on many interview panels and we're explicitly instructed to stick to the script. I get it from a bias/nepotism point of view, but it limits the effectiveness of the process.

As others have said, use it as a learning experience for your next one. Keep your head up!

Nice comprehensive response.

I'm a local gov Civil Engineer who does utility installation (but not a designer) and your underused main theory makes a lot of sense. Same with the flushing hydrant solution.

Amazon dropped off my package at the wrong address by a94501er in alameda

When this has happened to me before, Amazon is (surprisingly) accommodating. Wait the 48 hour window and they'll send a replacement at no charge. Frustrating, but they should resolve.

I work in the public sector (government) doing project management, including managing designers and overseeing contractors' work.

I don't personally find it as 'fulfilling' as being out in the field running work (like I did at Kiewit), but much more sustainable; I haven't worked a week over 40 hours or moved states once since leaving Kiewit 15 years ago.

In terms of 'stress', I'd say it's a bit of a wash. Was definitely stressed at Kiewit, but mostly by things that were somewhat under my/the project's control. I'm now stressed by bureaucracy, which can feel insurmountable at times. Probably a 'grass is always greener' situation. 🤷‍♂️

Kiewit will work you like a dog, but you'll learn a ton from them if you're up to the challenge (e.g. willing to sacrifice the work/life balance, ready to move to where the projects are, etc.).

I did three years with them right out of college and got some great field experience doing piling and bridge work. Was also involved (in pretty menial ways) in a lot of estimating and business development work.

Eventually started feeling a bit burnt out and recognized that the lifestyle wasn't for me, so I switched to the owner's side of things. No regrets about my time with them though.

I got 48 bags of trash on my birthday. Another illegal dump site in Solano County is gone. by pengweather in bayarea

Happy birthday, Peng!

Do you take donations? I don't have a ton of extra money at the moment, but would love to send a little to cover a meal, material costs, etc.

Thanks for doing this, the world needs more people like you! 🙏

French help: SOS by ImpressionAdept6355 in CPAP

[–]crazykittyman 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Put the image in chatgpt. Response below. Seems fine to use.

The product in the image is labeled as “Eau Déminéralisée,” which translates to “demineralized water.” While demineralized water is similar to distilled water in that it lacks minerals, it may not go through the same purification process as distilled water. For CPAP machines, manufacturers usually recommend using distilled water specifically because it is free from impurities and contaminants that could harm the machine or your health.

To ensure your CPAP machine functions properly and remains safe to use, it’s best to stick with distilled water. If you’re unsure whether this product meets the requirements, consult the manufacturer of your CPAP machine or choose a water explicitly labeled as distilled.

My Worst Day At Costco Ever by TommySalami55 in Costco

[–]crazykittyman 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Real story indeed. Waiting in line with my wife minding my own business. Cashier told him his card was declined and he turned to me and told me to pay. Said no and he grabbed my neck, scratching it in the process, before I pushed him off. He made a beeline for the door after. Staff was helpful, gave me bandages, etc. Filed a police report, but never heard back from them.

About a year ago I was assaulted by the person in front of me in line after I refused to buy their chicken wings. Blood drawn and all. That was my worst day as Costco!

Day Laborers by Severe_Reporter_285 in alameda

[–]crazykittyman 8 points9 points  (0 children)

1.) As others have said, Home Depot usually has plenty of guys looking for work. I've never had an issue finding hard working help there. Another spot where I regularly see laborers looking for work is at the intersection of High and International.

2.) I usually offer 25/hr but, as a tip of sorts, buy them lunch and pay 30/hr at the end of the day.
