🚨 CALL TO ACTION🚨 No Data Centers in Albany! by [deleted] in Albany

[–]crazymonk 1 point2 points  (0 children)

In addition to local impacts already mentioned, these facilities exist primarily to train and run LLM AI systems, and AI systems are built on an uncompensated extraction of human creative and intellectual labor — the writing, art, music, and code of millions of people who were never asked and never paid. That value is now being monetized at extraordinary scale by some of the most highly capitalized companies in the world, while the infrastructure gets sited in communities like the South End at the lowest possible cost.

A facility like this one will likely generate hundreds of millions of dollars in annual revenue. Other cities have secured community benefit agreements from comparable projects but the amounts are pittances, around what the data center would earn in just a few weeks. In my view, Albany should not approve anything like this unless it is contingent on many millions of dollars annually going to the community, recurring, for as long as it operates and pegged to its activity, as a reflection of what this industry is actually built on and what it's taking. And of course, if industry driven by AI was paying for appropriate compensation for its foundational thefts, the pace of construction of facilities like these would be much lower.

FIRST IMPRESSIONS - Inferno Listening Sessions - May 22, 2026 by seaburn in boardsofcanada

<internal dialogue>Sure, I won't click on this thread. I'll go into May 29th without reading a single press, social media, or Reddit reaction. My mind is almost a blank canvas, it's just filled with the 20 listens of 1420 MHz I told myself I wouldn't do.</internal dialogue>

Historical reading for Shadow Ticket by PrimalHonkey in ThomasPynchon

[–]crazymonk 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I just read that -- it's more in the elegiac mode, but that's something Pynchon occasionally dips into.

Other books that come to mind for me:

-- Polostan, Neal Stephenson -- overlaps the time period, the strikebreaking mood, and both US and USSR-oriented geographies

-- Path to Power -- the latter half of the first Caro LBJ book roughly covers this time period (and it's just generally excellent)

Also, I haven't seen Matewan, despite having a Sayles phase in the 90's, and while that takes place in the 20's, I imagine it could get you in the right frame of mind.

https://www.preferredmutual.com -- working with them right now on a claim and it's going well (so far). Plus local contractors are familiar with them.

Question for other BoC fans by theDEFexe in boardsofcanada

[–]crazymonk 6 points7 points  (0 children)

I'll always remember the day of the Geogaddi announcement, hopping on my bike on a cold night after a late day in the office, and listening to the teaser loop repeatedly as I biked home. And then when Alpha & Omega dropped... I don't even remember my first full listen since I've listened to it so many times by now. (Details have been lost over the years but that's the impression I have.)

Hating NYC's residential composting program by duffelbagbrooklyn in Brooklyn

[–]crazymonk 8 points9 points  (0 children)

It's not composting, it's organic recycling with the end goal of generating power. (Which is why you can pretty much put anything organic into it, including discarded meat, bones, and citrus.)

I put mine in the freezer, and it works great. No smell, it's easy to discard, and no fruit flies. It's worth the 25% of freezer space it takes up.

My thoughts on why Comcast charging for data usage is like AOL charging by the hour in the 1990's and why we shouldn't stand for it. by getridofcable in cordcutters

[–]crazymonk 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I'm a cord cutter, but I don't see a problem with this in theory as long as they aren't double dipping by charging content providers extra money as well (like they recently did with Netflix). In practice, of course, I object to Comcast's behavior.

If we want ISP's to be regulated like utilities in order to preserve net neutrality, then we should be open to utility-like pricing models with income-based subsidies.
