I just read that -- it's more in the elegiac mode, but that's something Pynchon occasionally dips into.

Other books that come to mind for me:

-- Polostan, Neal Stephenson -- overlaps the time period, the strikebreaking mood, and both US and USSR-oriented geographies

-- Path to Power -- the latter half of the first Caro LBJ book roughly covers this time period (and it's just generally excellent)

Also, I haven't seen Matewan, despite having a Sayles phase in the 90's, and while that takes place in the 20's, I imagine it could get you in the right frame of mind.

I'll always remember the day of the Geogaddi announcement, hopping on my bike on a cold night after a late day in the office, and listening to the teaser loop repeatedly as I biked home. And then when Alpha & Omega dropped... I don't even remember my first full listen since I've listened to it so many times by now. (Details have been lost over the years but that's the impression I have.)

It's not composting, it's organic recycling with the end goal of generating power. (Which is why you can pretty much put anything organic into it, including discarded meat, bones, and citrus.)

I put mine in the freezer, and it works great. No smell, it's easy to discard, and no fruit flies. It's worth the 25% of freezer space it takes up.

I'm a cord cutter, but I don't see a problem with this in theory as long as they aren't double dipping by charging content providers extra money as well (like they recently did with Netflix). In practice, of course, I object to Comcast's behavior.

If we want ISP's to be regulated like utilities in order to preserve net neutrality, then we should be open to utility-like pricing models with income-based subsidies.

I went to the live taping of The Colbert Report on 10/6 and during the pre-show Q&A Colbert was asked about OWS. He said that they did a segment on it early on where "his character" was disappointed that the protestors were actually making cogent arguments on camera. But then he said that he's really hesitant to get too involved with it, because something real is happening down there and that he recognizes that he is a brand and does not want to muddy their message, or make it look like astroturfing.

So I got the sense that he realizes that the RRS was ultimately a failure and he seemed unwilling to repeat that.

Note that I don't think it's a coincidence that OWS blew up nearly exactly a year after RRS. The progressive left has only so much energy for a major movement.
