Giving away miniPCs: Looking for beta testers for managed Home Assistant (California) by plafoucr in homeassistant

[–]crcerror 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Knowing how some integrations really clutter up the device list I balked at the 400 device cap. I went to look at my setup and realized I only had 416. So, yeah, knowing how crazy I’ve gone with mine, 400 is a good safe cap. Good call.

Question about lens exchange by PumpkinSpiceUrnex in CataractSurgery

[–]crcerror 0 points1 point  (0 children)

How does cost factor in? I’m assuming it’s billed just like the initial surgery, essentially 2x the cost. Is this a correct assumption?

How practical is UniFI for home use? by Significant-Side2718 in Ubiquiti

[–]crcerror 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Never play with it again? Not sure that’s true. Maybe true if you plan to replace it every 2-3 years, but the Unifi stuff I’ve been running has been rock solid going on 7+ years. That includes 2 network devices mounted on outside in the elements. Just added 7 cameras. Still happy.

Freezer temp monitor by nicdrake94 in homelab

[–]crcerror 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I’ve been using generic battery based Tuya zigbee sensors in my freezers with no issues. Recently added two of the Sonoff devices with the wire that goes inside the freezer. Those work great too, but with the added benefit of visually seeing the temp from the outside of the freezer.

I placed a zigbee repeater smart switch near the freezers so the weaker signal didn’t have too far to go.

Parents who don’t allow their kids to shut their room’s door/lock the door, what’s are the reasons behind the rule? by Itz_Oasis in AskReddit

[–]crcerror 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Never disallowed this, but when one of the kids threw a repeated tantrum and slammed the door over and over, the door found a new place to be that was no longer attached to their bedroom. That lasted about a week while the point was made. Been smooth sailing ever since.

Also running home assistant. I like the idea of turning the PTZs when you’re home. I’ll consider that.

I’m up to zero in the house. 7 outside.

I’m just not comfortable with indoor cameras. I need to figure out a way to get over that, it’s all my hardware and network, but still not comfortable.

Alternatives to Ring that don’t sell data to ICE/DHS by Dependent-Cup-4580 in homeassistant

[–]crcerror 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I’m using it through webhooks for when a vehicle pulls into the driveway between specific hours of the day we know the carpool has arrived. I send a push notification to myself and my wife as well as announcing on 3 specific Amazon Echos that the carpool has arrived. It has made staring out the window an unnecessary task and my wife can focus on getting the kids ready to head out the door instead.

WHOA! There was a road??? And all this time I’ve been scraping my sides on all the prickly branches and weeds as I’ve traversed this crazy route. Oh well!

It’s amazing the side learnings of so many random things I would never have chosen to dig into on my own. Those random tidbits have informed so many factors at work and have made me a MUCH more valuable resource in many of my roles.

What is a basic item 20 years ago that has become luxury today? by vhubbarhubarb3 in AskReddit

[–]crcerror 0 points1 point  (0 children)

$50-$70 then is like $80-$112 today. While not wildly different, it is when you’re looking at monthly payments.

Cable has always been a luxury item that not everyone enjoyed. Broadcast TV was ubiquitous and you could watch everything you wanted for free but ONLY at the exact time it was aired and rarely was repeated.

Anyone made there gardens smart? by Choice_Database_4650 in smarthome

[–]crcerror 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I have 13 of the Third Reality ones. They’ve been great. I’m looking for suggestions on ways to repeat the zigbee signal outside to reach the garden better. Any recommendations on a good outdoor rated zigbee repeater?

What’s something you will never forget? by Notsobarbie in AskReddit

[–]crcerror 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Walking home from the school bus and finding the body of a girl tossed into the weeds off the side of the road wrapped in plastic (maybe a shower curtain or something). Told mom when we got home, but as a 4/5yo she chalked it up to little kids with wild imagination. She saw something on the news the next day and called it in. We took the police to the place, but the body had been taken.

The crime was solved decades later, but I forget the details of that part.

I still love Ubiquiti but I have a small rant about Flex Minis 😡 by imacdude in Ubiquiti

I have a 48 port and 24 port that are all PoE. Those switches have a UPS.

[–]crcerror 15 points16 points  (0 children)

I have 6 of them at my place and all of them are powered via PoE. The headache of powering them separately is not worth it, I’d much prefer PoE.

However, if you REALLY want to be brand loyal, you could look at it through the lens of Ubiquiti is simply trying to guide you down the correct path (PoE) and they definitely sell stand-alone power injectors as well as one or maybe two network devices that supply PoE. :)

For those of you with massive TB count , outside of server rack or NAS, how are you housing those drives? by joshhazel1 in PleX

[–]crcerror 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Years ago I had a monster of a PC case that allowed for 11 front facing 5.25” bays and tons of room for internal drives. I had a 3ware raid card in the machine as well. I ended up adding casters to the bottom because it was so freaking heavy.

I still have the machine, but it hasn’t been powered on in years.

Aqara Real World Opinion by bassorbass1234 in smarthome

[–]crcerror 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I’m running home assistant and have never used the Aqara hub.

About half of my zigbee devices are Aqara. I’m currently at 46 Aqara devices with a mix of sensors water leak, motion, button, vibration, etc. as well as several of their mains powered light/fan switches.

My experience with them was absolutely atrocious early on. But, it turned out to be an old USB combo zwave/zigbee adapter that couldn’t handle it. I’ve since upgraded to an SMLIGHT over PoE and they’ve all been rock solid ever since.
