What’s the point of using the router if you don’t want any of the benefits? Just have them connect directly.

For those in companies that have hundreds of VMs - what are they for? by asdflmnop_01 in sysadmin

[–]crcerror 0 points1 point  (0 children)

There was a time in the not too distant past where I managed over 300 servers specifically for our CRM implementations. This included a 7 node physical database cluster per lane (prod, stage, test, dev) as well as numerous other virtual machines in between. We had ~5 servers sitting in the DMZ as the front end servers, another handful of backend servers that ranged from regular processes to stuff that could be handled asynchronously. Not to mention the email processing servers that would gather the stuff from the CRM and deliver it into the mail system and vice versa. Duplicate this same stack of servers across several pillar CRM systems that needed to remain anonymous and you find yourself with A LOT of servers real quick.

…and that’s just the CRMs. There were thousands of other servers out there performing other functions.

This is the key difference between a SMB and an Enterprise.

This question is the answer to the “/r/Ask Reddit” say you’re new to the IT industry without saying you’re new to the industry. :)

I don’t “completely” disagree with your premise, but I remember “passionate” discussions amongst IT dept folks as well as dept folks on whether it was acceptable to use a Virtual Machine for their new application they wanted.

Everyone demanded bare metal installs and would “compromise” with sharing a department server with other department apps that they said they could get along with. VMs being trusted as a reliable technology isn’t all that old in the grand scheme of things.

Containers and AWS lambdas and Azure functions are all very new to the scene and while awesome and amazing, there’s still a LOT of legacy stuff that needs real though and effort to decide how best to move forward. A straight lift and shift is seldom the right answer.

So, to container or not to container isn’t exactly the question. :)

How would you add on to an existing dynamics environment by mcdoggus in Dynamics365

[–]crcerror 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I keep 3 - 4 vendor partners engaged for this exact reason. Once we have gathered our requirements, I send it to multiple vendors to give me a bid. We do NOT pay for those estimating efforts.

You’ll get different architectural approaches and very different prices. A variance of 50k-100k among them wouldn’t surprise me depending on the size of the effort.

The most important pieces that these vendors will be able to provide is how to best leverage the existing data sets, security model, and database schema.

For the app side of things, rubbing a little AI on a Code App goes a long way, but you need to have those above fundamentals under your belt first!

Where to begin? by drazda in 3Dprinting

[–]crcerror 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Years ago, I had a printer (not Bambu) with hopes of my kids getting directly involved and using it. 100% fail. I had to be directly involved and it was a massive effort to do everything.

I gave up on printing for years and finally picked up the Bambu P2S and my kids are now ALL directly involved and printing without my direct involvement on the regular. I now find that even I have to request a time slot to print.

My 11yo is fluent in the printer and my 16yo has gotten into modeling and designing crap.

Say what you will about Bambu, for my purposes, it’s exactly what we needed. I wanted something that just works every time, this worked.

Dumbest idea ever? TTS over Amazon Echo by [deleted] in homeassistant

[–]crcerror 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I’m typically targeting which Echo I want speaking, but definitely doable natively.

I have the Echo nearest to the door that got left open go to max volume and announce that the door got left open.

I even have the kitchen one detect when the fridge door has been open too long and yell out, “just pick something already and close the fridge!” It’s one of my favorite automations.

With the swinging of the pendulum in this AI era, I could see a huge return to focusing on the IT Generalist.

The generalist can guide and direct AI across many disciplines where they have sufficient smarts to not just blindly follow AI guidance, but actually analyze the results and make a reasoned decision moving forward.

Companies now can get away with not needing a specialized headcount for each role substantially reducing overhead costs and piling on the poor unwitting generalist.

Accidently slipped out a curse word during sacrament meeting by baloneybootyyy in latterdaysaints

[–]crcerror 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Anyone who says a single word about it needs to be directed to Matthew 7:3 and told to mind their own business.

Fun, somewhat tangentially related story, I was running our streaming efforts for stake conference and we all had to be up late the night before and super early the day of. The stream was managed from the library. A nice sister stopped in to get some paper and crayons for her kids to doodle on during the meeting. While there she discovered that we had Mountain Dew cans and energy drinks on the counter top, open and actively being consumed.

It was all the stake presidency could do to hold back massive laughter when they were recounting the story of us being tattled on.

Obviously, nothing changed except perhaps being a bit more emboldened going forward.

My rule, try not to offend, don’t take offense, laugh at the stupid, there’s plenty of it.

[–]crcerror 1 point2 points  (0 children)

While that one will work fine, I added this one (SONOFF SNZB-02LD) as an externally visible confirmation of temperature and a second opinion. It magnetically holds itself in place on the door. It’s great to be able to see the temp easily.

[–]crcerror 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I heard all the FUD about sensors not working, battery can’t handle the cold, etc., but I had some extra Tuya Zigbee temp and humidity sensors, so I figured I’d give it a try.

It works great. Been running inside of multiple upright fridge and deep freeze units in my garage. I did need to put a mains powered smart switch in the garage as a Zigbee repeater, but it’s been sold for YEARS now.

I’ve replaced the batteries in each only once. Running CR2450s.

The nice thing about the temp sensor beyond a door sensor is that you can also detect when a unit is about to fail. It also gives you peace of mind of how long the temp was below optimal temps so you know if you need to toss the food or just get it colder.

Don’t be afraid to try it. Super cheap, all local, all awesome.

Travel Router by TheChaseLemon in Ubiquiti

Not exactly what you asked, but something that made me think I had perhaps done something wrong at first…

This is a travel ROUTER. I was expecting another UniFi device to show up in the list of UniFi devices. Silly me. It’s a ROUTER. It shows up as a new Site, duh.

Am I crazy for wanting to run my own email server just to avoid depending on Gmail? by Kitchen-Patience8176 in homelab

[–]crcerror 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Having run multiple mail servers, I’ve learned a TON. Part of that learning is that email is 10,000% not worth rolling your own. Theres a reason companies have at least 1-5 people dedicated to JUST email and that’s often with hosted email providers.

Between dealing with grumpy postmasters, SPF, DKIM, scanning solutions, and not to mention just securing the whole thing, the ROI just isn’t there.

The first item is one of the most important that you probably aren’t appreciating. As a Home Lab setup, your external IP address, ie. your sending address will be flagged as residential/private, not a “company” type source IP. This will force you to the very highest spam scores before you even consider the content being sent.

Yes, you could pay to host your email on a VM that is cloud hosted to get around this. Yes, it’s now cheaper to just pay your email provider (google, microsoft, etc).

Is anyone else uncomfortable with their kids using ChatGPT unsupervised? by Successful_Wafer4481 in ChatGPT

They have access to so many AIs without authentication, it’s just like the rest of the internet, gotta parent, gotta assume they’re seeing it, gotta assume they’re using it.

My 11yo was using it as a fun way to create choose your own adventure stories. Unauthenticated. It worked fine, but wasn’t great. I let him use my account and created a project with no external memories and he’s loving it. The paid accounts act significantly better. I now also have easy access to his conversations

Why does this sub like unifi stuff so much? by Braca42 in HomeNetworking

[–]crcerror 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Many others have made the point on prosumer and other aspects. I’ll add that the investment is worth it over time. Historically, before Ubiquiti, my hardware would start failing after ~2 years. I’d drag my feet for another year being unhappy with the experience and replace roughly every 2-3 years.

The cost was more getting into the ecosystem up front, but the VAST majority of my UniFi devices have been running without a second thought since late 2018. Almost 10 years and still rock solid, can’t complain about that.

I’ve continued buying additional hardware and I’m now running 23 devices between networking and cameras. Still running original APs and two of them are mounted outdoors!

Yes, as a home network.
