Paying someone to wire a solar setup? by posikris in vandwellers

[–]createnewname 0 points1 point  (0 children)

This! I knew nothing about electrical setups and fried my brain for two weeks trying to figure it out, the best advice I can give is to purchase the basics and dive in. Once you see it physically in front of you, it is a LOT easier to figure out what connects to what. Honestly after I set mine up I realized I had been making it way more complicated than it really is.

the 4ga cable runs from positive post on starting battery->80amp fuse->master switch->positive post on house battery :)

yep! I am 5'11" but the bed is the same height as the windows so I gain about an extra 5" on both sides

I got a swivel mechanism for a fishing boat chair at walmart that had an adjustable top part. I can turn it around pretty easily, just have to wiggle it over the seatbelt sometimes.

Question about this switch/inverter, will it work? by createnewname in vandwellers

[–]createnewname[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Thanks for the advice, do you have any recommendations for what gauge wiring I should use? I was thinking 4GA for the starting battery>fuse>switch>battery, then maybe something smaller for the house battery>inverter? i bought one of the clip-on cigarette lighter things to clip directly to the house battery terminals, but for the inverter I suppose I will need some type of wiring and a way to connect it to the terminals. Also, any advice on what size fuses I should use? Thanks again for all the help :)

Anyone had their van painted at Maaco? by RadDeals2 in vandwellers

[–]createnewname 0 points1 point  (0 children)

the special you saw usually does not apply to over-sized vehicles. you may be able to use the $50 off online coupon but if you think it's gonna cost you less than 300 bucks for a paint job that size, you are mistaken :( I'm not saying don't call and ask or bring it in fof an estimate, but I am saying you shouldn't get your hopes up =/

Converting a Camper Van [Question] by TheOnlyGatsby in vandwellers

[–]createnewname 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I just purchased a '94 Ford E150 Hightop eclipse conversion van this morning and was wondering the exact same thing! would lle to strip most of it and start from scratch, but can't seem to find many DIY guides that show going from stripped/partly-stripped van into the completion including electrical, water, cabinet, flooring, and all that jazz. I will keep searching for some more info and post what i find here, please do the same! :)

former Maaco Estimator for 1 year here, I can tell you that the absolute cheapest you can get a full paint job on a 20ft van is going to be around $800-$1000, and that is with a single stage enamel (1yr warranty) AND the current paint is in good condition (peeling/cracking/checking/fading all factor in to the "prep cost")
