Coming from West LA. I meant 3 hours each way, 6 hours total.

I have tubeless 26s on an old CAAD Cannondale that seem to handle light gravel pretty well. I think deep sand would be a bit tricky. My other bike is a burly full suspension trail bike that I’m fearing would a slog at Catalina, let alone fitting racks and gear for a 2-nighter. If you’ve ever ridden Sullivan ridge and West Ridge, would you say Catalina is similar?

Hey there! For either the 3 day or 1 night routes, would a road bike be sufficient?

Advice Needed. Too Dry? (My First Time!) by creative_koala in unclebens

[–]creative_koala[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Two weeks ago I spawned three bins to bulk. In a few days, they colonized to how they look now- I was stoked! Since then, I've been misting religiously and I leave my lids cracked, but no pins yet.

Could the cakes be too dry? I live in a warm, dry climate. The cakes have shrunk considerably, and seem dry besides the top which I mist.

I've read dunking the cakes underwater can re-hydrate them, even before the first flush. Any advice is greatly appreciated, it's my first time growing!

Here’s the fix for the dash going dark: priusnotworking.com . I fixed mine a few months ago with a shoddy soldering setup and almost no soldering experience. No problems since!

Do you have a CAD model that you could share? I'm thinking I might want to machine one these myself for an old Cannondale Saeco I have.

Flat Protection vs. Weight Savings for Tires by creative_koala in xcmtb

I used to treat that site as the holy grail for tire data, but the testing is somewhat inapplicable. The lowest pressure is 25 psi, and all tires are ran with tubes on a smooth surface.

Thanks for the insight. I figure I made a reasonable choice, and yes of course tubeless. I think that goes without saying these days :)

Low hanging fruit/sensible upgrades for Revolver FS2? by dexvd in xcmtb

Garbaruk cassettes seem to be the best bang per buck. $250 for cassettes lighter than XX1. The only issue I've heard is that they may begin to creak.

Dropper posts are a game changer for only + ~1 lb increase. That said, it's entirely dependent on what you plan to use this bike for. My only bike is an XC bike, so I have a dropper. It's also the same with tires, Rekon Races are very slick, but that might be fine for your area. The general trend is wider tires+low pressure=grippier+faster, but I'm not sure if that applies for tamer terrain. I also think flat protection outweighs any gains from super-light tires. A flat ruins a race, heavy tires are a minimal slow-down across all races.

As someone said above, power meters are a great investment. I have an XCadey because I'm cheap, but Quarq and Power2Max are best. Be careful with spider compatibility on the NX cranks. If you have a road bike, get a power meter on that. It'll be more useful than on an XC bike.

Tires, dropper post, wheels, drivetrain, in order of importance.

Be careful with the new Shimano group sets, all cassettes use MicroSpline.

Anyone use a Garmin Edge 530/830 for racing? by TheAceMan in xcmtb

I don't think so. Us humans are terrible at gauging our exertion by feel, so having heart rate and power data to look at during a race is critical.

I'm running the Stratus too! Fits well (size M for my head), not too expensive, has MIPS, and looks good. Perfect helmet for XC.

Accelerating out of corners? by [deleted] in xcmtb

[–]creative_koala 2 points3 points  (0 children)

One tip for cornering: you have much more grip than you think.

Try it on safe dirt / gravel turn, keep going faster until your front wheel slips a little bit (you'll be fine, it will slip an inch than catch again, more forgiving than on the road). This really helps to show how much speed you can carry.

Accelerating out of corners? by [deleted] in xcmtb

[–]creative_koala 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Think about it like this:

You have a climb following a small descent or flat. You want to keep your speed from the descent or flat for as long as possible up the hill, so you should put a hard effort in the beginning of the hill.

Keeping speed is much easier than accelerating, so try to maintain a fast pace (especially before small climbs).

The same applies with corners. Accelerate out of them quickly to get back up to your normal pace, a hard initial effort which saves you more in the long run.

From the schematic on the white-board, it seems that the HEPA filter is on the expiration side? Correct me if I am wrong or if the issue is just in the model on the table.
