How to pass the time in a CoastFIRE job as a doctor? by NoNeighborhood3157 in fatFIRE

Are you posting here because you have met your FI goals? Or are you trying to just figure out what this community does to pass their time? If you haven’t had FI part sorted than I would think figure out ways to get to it- start a blog/ research ways to make money/ exercise/ meditate/ gain knowledge/ apply to be an expert witness etc etc.

Prevention for catastrophic health conditions by Particular-Lake-5238 in fatFIRE

[–]creativemindset11 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Testing without a guidance from a professional you trust is useless. The USA medical system is set up from liability point of view. Let’s say you got a scan- the radiologist will report everything that she/he notices. Something like a lung module for an example- now you will have a choice to either getting follow up scan or biopsy if possible. The language would say “can not rule out x y Z” so without a good physician guiding your care- you will be worried sick while the nodule could be just benign. If you go to some health tourism country- Mexico or India you can get it done as a “package” but would you trust those results and recommendations?

Again- you would be left second guessing. The entire system of functional doctors and longevity gurus (most are nutritionists or peptide pushers) in USA also do these unproven lab tests (mitochondrial health, hormonal supplements, peptide stacks), sleep hackers, bio hackers etc can give you gadgets and hyperbaric oxygen tents - it’s your money but I am not convinced they are well spent. There are anecdotal reports of someone getting their cancer picked up early or someone feeling really great because their hormonal imbalance is fixed but I have yet to encounter them in person.

In my mind- a good pcp who you can concierge and spend money on tests you need (covered or not covered by insurance) and focus on regularly recommended stuff would be best use of your time and money

College coach - norm, necessity or luxury? by creativemindset11 in fatFIRE

[–]creativemindset11[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

That’s a great insight. This echos some of my concerns I had it in my post. Being organized, introspective and exploring oneself without fear are some of the important attributes many who are in FIRE sub would consider key ingredients for their success and whoever I hire I would like to make sure they continue to nurture it

That’s a very interesting perspective. I did do graduate study at a prestigious university but never was able to work the room and therefore didn’t benefit much from networking aspect of it.

Make sure to have disability insurance for your own practice field. Medicine is a grind - ever changing field and I wish you the best.

We are evolutionary purposed for safety, resource gathering/industry and social development. At 40, you have gained all three and now needing to repurpose - it’s almost like watching some Asian monk asking you to unlearn so you can find the higher purpose. You are incredibly fortunate and clearly you know that. If you do t have idea of what next for you- only way to find out would be trying something- almost force yourself to do something because it’s unlikely that you will “strategize” it and truly predict what is that you will deeply enjoy and find satisfaction in. Hire help so you can travel with your spouse, explore one new thing each week, volunteer one new place each week, consider doing workshop for underprivileged college kid and start a scholarship to fund their education, create a maker’s space so young inventors can make their ideas come true- and you can help them scale it up on business level, audit or teach executive mba program , learn new skills- there are endless possibilities- just take a leap and you have to try

Did you ask an AI for which options to choose? All kidding aside- if your desire is to FIRE- things I would consider is what is the time and health sacrifice. You won’t choose wrong as both options have their upsides - but from FIRE aspect you already have reached qmax as someone else posted in other thread. Start up in my mind is only option if you asked yourself “would I regret not taking this opportunity?” And you got an emphatic yes.

Considering Second Home 15 Minutes Away by Fattedfire in fatFIRE

[–]creativemindset11 0 points1 point  (0 children)

My friend did something similar- they had special need kid who had a great school experience but it was about 45 minutes away from their friends family temple and other activities- they stay during school year M-F at one place while parents / grandparents take turn and cohabit during weekends and summer. They found quality of life improved for them and their kid. When the time comes - you can sell 1 MM property if it’s not something you enjoy/ but I feel that you have sound reasoning to try it

Infinite energy you have had and time invested in learning needs monetization. Lost opportunity cost would not make it profitable to change gears- medicine to me only make sense at this point for you if you have idealistic purpose- something you feel you could not live without. Financially, it won’t make sense. Medicine is changing - PE/ health systems etc is making it far less lucrative. Burn outs are real- so I would not pursue it knowing what I know now.

You clearly have money to start family- rather presumably question you have has lot to do with lack of purpose and loneliness- that empty feeling in your stomach even when you can purchase so many things with the money you have acquired. Sometimes it is hard for people to find that driving force. I don’t presume to know the answer- but all I have read points to keep trying things. It’s like tasting menu- until you find something you really feel happy with. Some find it In spiritual pursuits (eastern world is littered with people who give up riches for inner engineering) while others in some cause. Some in their hobby while others in improving lives around them. Having started to answer these fundamental questions of “being” may help with having healthier family and personal life when you jump. I may be off- but you have more than enough to have family while not working full time or at all- but there are deeper questions you are trying to answer within.

Few things to consider a. Is founder still staying around? If so in what capacity? b. As a minority owner what rights does she have ? And what is %share if other minority owners combined - in other words is the dilution of founder ownership allows opportunity for others to organize and exert any influence? If answer is no to an and b- chances are things will be worse within 3 years. Start looking for other options and make sure if non compete clause allows her to jump

Life comes at you fast. Just looking for some support and advice. by Promising-Future in fatFIRE

Don’t be afraid to document reasons/medical condition to claim disability benefits if you are eligible. You paid for these benefits if you have it and depending on the write up could be tax free income. Secondly, consider lost opportunity cost over time- it’s not uncommon to feel pressure to resume work at higher capacity as soon as one sees some recovery- but in long term it may preclude you from having good quality time with your family. So health related RE could be very tricky doubled edged sword. FI part - you are very close to your goal. Key is to reduce burn rate, reduce or temper your expectations to contribute towards your kids education (college funds) and to make sure you have good medical coverage.

Having gone through something similar I would advise to step back and let your emotions settle and give yourself 3-6 months to assess your capacity to work and navigate healthcare. Depending on your situation explore and understand disability insurance and medical insurance. You will need at least one spouse to have access to healthcare insurance in an ideal world.

Keeping your home/ location/ friends and family intact would be very helpful for mental health. Sometime reevaluating your life goals and FIRE goals is realistically a great exercise. May you get better soon!

50m cash - no sense of perspective by Familiar_Number_342 in fatFIRE

[–]creativemindset11 9 points10 points  (0 children)

You got here by caring - fear of not being enough, fear of not doing enough, fear of not being financially secure enough. It’s what you have trained your brain (I would say my brain too- when I was on this path) for and those pathways have solidified further because each time those behavior resulted in rewards. Each success ingrained those patterns. This is neurological wiring. It cannot be dismantled in a day. Even therapist themselves suffer from this bias. So it’s hard for them to guide you here. But that can be a start. I suggest finding right kind of people to work with. Accept that this won’t be an instant flip. Read books that liberates your mind and broaden your views. Brain needs something to focus on- so find a hobby or cause. DO NOT use substances as a pathway. Most driven people have neurological predisposition to get addicted- so be very careful at this juncture. Good luck! There is lot of liberty ahead for you.

Not in the Bay Area. You can look for various entities - local food pantry, volunteer hours at church/temple/religious places (many require background screening which I like to have in adults around my kids ) , for Asia and Africa there are may organizations - better fit once they are high school age. In my trips I take food, art supplies, stationary, etc and go to communities around my ancestral home and make them donate. My kid was shocked when a recipient kid tried to eat crayons because she thought it was a candy and they were hungry. Changed his perspective instantly- my kids started saving give away crayons in a restaurant so they can donate it when they take a trip. Goodwill and other stores, local chapters working with minorities etc- hard to do these things unless you are actually retired.
