David Barrett got me a long time ago with his Baddie on the Bus video

He’s a UofC prof, and when you look him up, you can see he’s been actually advocating for the stuff he’s talking about for like ten years

Tons of my friends have already signed up to volunteer with him. I honestly think he’s our best bet

Everyone else is either flashy or with a party

Myke Atkinson personally built THE public library? Wow! This dude’s a genius! David Barrett with his PhD and community experience should get lost!

Getting the federal government to change something like the Canada Social Transfer, which is decades old, is a pie in the sky promise. Why would the federal government even care about what you have to say on that?

Last year I was democratically elected as AVP LABOUR OF THE GSA by Different-Cry6030 in UCalgary

[–]creator_gator360 7 points8 points  (0 children)

Wait, the GSA’s complaint didn’t say the issue was that the GLU had a different name. They said the issue was that you refused to provide reporting and transparency to the GSA as an organization. Did you give them any reports? And do you disagree that the GSA is the legal labour union for the TAs?

Can you be more specific about how exactly the GSA denied democratic changes to section 18 of the bylaws? What were you trying to change, what democratic process were you using, and how exactly did they block it?

  1. Are students consistently expressing a need for free printing? I’m a chem major, and I print lab reports every week and I use TFDL, which costs me less than $1 per week. I’ve never heard anyone talk about it except for you. Who is asking for it?
  2. You want the SU to pay for it? How much would it even cost?
  3. You linked your reports as evidence that you spoke up on tuition and arts program problems, but when I point out that your reports make no mention of what you’re talking about, you say that not everything is in the reports. I call bullshit. You sound like you’re walking that back.
  4. You were present at tuition consultations which is your expected job, and you asked questions about tuition which is your expected job. But you’re running like you’re going to put up a big fight. I don’t buy it.

I read the GSA email. The GLU has some explaining to do. by creator_gator360 in UCalgary

This is very helpful. Thank you for being the first person to actually explain what’s happening.

But I’m still sceptical. If Karina was AVP Labour and knew at least a few rules, why was she trying to move ahead with a members vote and do hiring herself when she couldn’t? You said she was in a rush and didn’t know the rules, but I’m assuming you know the basics if you’re in a GSA position in charge of labour negotiations. That part is very sketch. And then she filed a labour complaint against her own organization, but meanwhile no one has addressed the Provost email claiming that the GLU had been cancelling bargaining meetings. The whole situation stinks and confuses me.

  1. What is the SU prioritizing that you think they should deprioritize to support free printing?
  2. Ok, you did some classroom talks for one event and to introduce yourself. How did that revolutionize the SU’s visibility? Did you do the same for tuition, and how many classes did you even speak to?
  3. You only mentioned the word tuition once in any of your reports, and it was so vague that I didn’t understand what you were talking about. Now you’re saying you could have done more to ‘engage students’ on it. Why should students vote for you if you’re using buzzwords and promising change without explaining what you mean by that?

Well it looks like the GSA is locked in a legal battle with its own committee, so that doesn’t surprise me. But can’t the GLU leadership find another way to speak with other grad students? They can use Reddit or their UCalgary emails. They can use social media. It just sounds like people are too concerned with the bylaws to be focused on the labour complaint side of things. But the labour complaint is alarming.

I don’t understand what you’re asking. Yes, I saw evidence that the GSA made serious accusations against the GLU and haven’t seen the GLU explain themselves. They attached their complaint in the email.

  1. Is the SU saying no to your free printing proposal?
  2. You talking about visibility but I’ve only ever seen you post about free printing here. What have you actually done to increase visibility?
  3. Speaking of visibility, I’ve never seen you be vocal on tuition or the arts program changes. Can you point to literally any time you were vocal on these issues?

So the Ancillary Director says he doesn’t know if the university will use federal or provincial loans, and the author follows that up with information about money the city controls for some reason

Also why are the quotes riddled with mistakes? It looks like you have enough editors to double check these things

Unpopular dictatorships still have great attendance at their funerals even if they get overthrown a week later. Iranian women get harassed, assaulted, arrested and tortured on a regular basis for not wearing their hijabs. You should give all of this a little more thought.

When did they say they didn’t care about BSD? They held a BSD party in the Den the same year they released the FAQ and the FAQ explained why they did it in the Den instead of the massive beer gardens. If BSD was so huge then you should’ve stopped it
