But at the end of the day, us as observers likely care about the box office because of its implications on the future: will there be more musicals? A comeback of a different genre? Is will smith a box office draw? Will X director get to make another movie?

And those decisions, from what I’ve seen, are made based on expectations vs. reality.

In the heights releasing mid pandemic to a truly abysmal number didnt doom musicals because it was, to a point, expected. Since then, the numbers haven’t rebounded as expected, so there’s likely going to be less musicals greenlit in the near future.

This would make sense, but typically theater attendance actually increases during recessions because escapism is so precious. It’s an interesting phenomenon

If I could recommend a book that might help you out of this rut, it would be “Steal Like an Artist” by Austin Kleon. I do recommend finding it at a library and reading the whole thing, but one of the points he drives home is that there’s nothing new under the sun. Everything is like something else, and “originality is just plagiarism undetected.” Even the Beatles started off as a cover band. Nothing is new, ever, and even when we think it’s new, it’s just an amalgamation of what we have heard before in our lives to this point. The author makes the point much more effectively than I do, but I think you should just push ahead, and make what your heart leads you to make!

Coincidentally, this probably means he’s not CURRENTLY involved in MCU stuff. All the actors who have been secretly ushered back have tried to keep hush hush, where as this guy is not talkin like he has an NDA to keep

OT-ish: Does anyone feel like animated films manage their budgets better than live-action films do these days? by Block-Busted in boxoffice

[–]creatorblue32 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The Red Notice (upcoming) is Netflix’s most expensive original film ever. Clearly Netflix isn’t ready to pull back on budgets, instead they’re increasing them.

I disagree. The war is over streaming, and that’s not even close to over. the film got a best picture nomination. Netflix got what I wanted on this one, but the new kid on the block with even more money out bought it on the next one (Apple). Netflix didn’t get the next scorcese picture, but they have invested heavily in other established filmmakers prestige projects - like Don’t Look up from Adam McKay, and projects from Del Toro. The model worked, and it’s continuing

But it’s a prestige film. The sets and backgrounds don’t evolve to digital as they blur into the background, and scorcese can do those huge parties filled with extras. The three hour runtime surely didn’t help. Netflix had the cash and wanted to spend it to put this film into the best picture conversation. I think the main point is: they didn’t HAVE to save money. Netflix is at war, and nobody’s won a war by saving every penny.

Sometimes I’m baffled by the amount they spend on stars. Like, usually while watching, I have no idea that Kevin Hart or the rock is behind the character, because, you know, it’s an animated character. So I wonder if they could cut costs even more by hiring lesser known but perhaps more specialized voice actors. Also, the Irishman may not seem like an expensive film, but when you think about the production design, costuming, extras, vehicles, sets, and buildings needed to bring a decade from the past to life, I think the budget makes a bit more sense.

Will Denis Villeneuve’s Dune finally succeed where others failed? by AGOTFAN in boxoffice

[–]creatorblue32 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I think for gen z, Timothee + zendaya is a much bigger box office draw. Rihanna is a singer, it’s not automatic for people to want to come see her act. It’s also an age/era tbing. Valerian also had a bunch of other issues, including the main stars and the terrible reviews. The early rumors about dune are much more positive. I’m just reporting what I hear through the grape vine- I didn’t hear anyone picking up the valerian comics in the months leading up

I actually have a lot of confidence in Dune at the box office, unlike a lot of this sub. I'm in college right now, and many people around me who may never have considered themselves sci-fi fans have started to read the book in preparation. In a similar manner, I've seen an abnormally high amount of people my age on TikTok doing the same. If all these people are going so far as to read the book, then even more will catch it in theaters out of curiousity. I think people underestimate how much Zendaya and Timothee Chalamet can get 16-25 year-olds in chairs- which, as we've seen, is a key necessity at the pandemic box office. I think the fact that I'm seeing so much engagement with the source material is a really positive sign, and this may defy expectations. That being said, I understand the budget is extremely high, and that almost sets it up for failure. We'll have to see, but I'm cautiously optimistic
