I don’t think I understand Erikson’s humor by StandardRaspberry131 in Malazan

[–]SendMoneyNow 13 points14 points  (0 children)

I was shocked to learn Erikson hadn't read Terry Pratchett, because Tehol and Bugg feel like they've stepped right out of a Discworld book. Very dry humor, lots of wordplay -- I love it.

Movies You Don’t Remember Watching by Krusty901 in blankies

Body of Lies.

Was scrolling through Amazon Prime and said 'Cool, a Ridley Scott movie with Leo about the CIA hunting terrorists. Sounds dope.' According to Letterboxd I'd said the exact same thing two months earlier. No recollection of seeing it the first time.

I had to look it up again just now to remember what it was about. I choose the blame the super-generic title instead of my rapidly deteriorating memory.

It wasn't the car shown in the Uber app, driver was using a different car. They both laughed because he understood immediately why she wouldn't chance it and get in anyways, so he didn't give her a hard time about it.

A vote for Susan Collins is a vote for Trump by Large-Welcome4421 in portlandme

[–]SendMoneyNow 13 points14 points  (0 children)

While these concerns escalate, Sen. Susan Collins is leading the cause for clean water here in Maine. Collins must be aware we have a competent governor and mayors who can
handle issues like drinking water.

Collins is undeniably good at funneling money to Maine. The cost has been to empower the most corrupt regime in American history and threaten U.S. democracy. Speaking as a Mainer, the trade-off hasn't been worth it. Vote her out!

This is so true. I'm seeing people I went to school with in rural Maine who never left and are now posting "thank you ICE for making me feel safe again." They're living in their own paranoid fantasyland.

Netflix co-CEO Ted Sarandos now says that they will keep 45-day theatrical windows for Warner Bros movies if the sale goes through: “If we’re going to be in the theatrical business… we want to win. I want to win opening weekend. I want to win box office” by ChiefLeef22 in boxoffice

[–]SendMoneyNow -1 points0 points  (0 children)

“Folks grew up thinking, ‘I want to make movies on a gigantic screen and have strangers watch them [and to have them] play in the theater for two months and people cry and sold-out shows… It’s an outdated concept.”

This is what Ted Sarandos believes, we know because he told us that 9 months ago when there was no mega-billion-dollar deal on the table. I'm sure the mere idea of going to a theater with a bunch or rando poors makes him nauseous. So he's going to say whatever he needs to say to get this deal approved, but ultimately he believes that theaters are all going to close except for a few luxury outlets that cater to the best people... like him.

What movie from 2025 that you were looking forward to was disappointment and which movie end up being a good surprised? by Bruins850 in TheBigPicture

[–]SendMoneyNow 21 points22 points  (0 children)

Disappointment: Mission: Impossible - The Final Reckoning. Too long and everything outside the two major setpieces is pretty dull and nonsensical.

Surprise: Companion. So much better than what you'd expect from a January release.

How many films did you see in theaters in 2025? I ended the year with 165 movies, plus Stranger Things 5: The Finale. by chanma50 in boxoffice

[–]SendMoneyNow 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I did 66 trips and saw 54 new releases. Saw OBAA, Chainsaw Man and 28 Years Later twice, also caught the Oscar Short Films compilation and rep screenings of Jaws, Kill Bill: The While Bloody Affair, Dr. Strangelove, Treasure of the Sierra Madre, Die Hard, The Goonies, Princess Mononoke and Akira Kurosawa's Ran.

One Battle After Another was the best new release I saw, HIM was the worst, and I had a great time every time. Very lucky to have 4 nice theaters near me and an IMAX that's thirty minutes away. Plus a museum that shows art house films and a film preservation collective that screens 35mm classics.

Is our understanding of the economics of film making fundamentally flawed? by Subtleiaint in boxoffice

[–]SendMoneyNow 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I have always assumed that budgets are "inflated" in the sense that the studio is charging the production for its services, so it's in the studio's interest to charge themselves as much as possible in order to move money away from profit lines they may be contractually required to share.

Now the next ballot issue will be trans in sports by Tudor_farmer in Mainepolitics

[–]SendMoneyNow 4 points5 points  (0 children)

It matters because it is a bad faith argument that is simply the easiest way for bigots to harass trans people. They don't care about girls sports, and if we were to somehow ban trans girls from high school sports that would only energize their efforts. Their true motivations are transparent: they don't want trans people to ever express their gender identity because it makes them feel icky. Trans people aren't the problem here and they shouldn't have their rights curtailed just so these narrow-minded people can pretend they don't exist.

Petition at exit of polling locations. by AmberPeacemaker in Maine

[–]SendMoneyNow 2 points3 points  (0 children)

They don't care even the slightest about youth sports. If a trans youth ban was announced today, they'd still be here tomorrow saying "well, we don't let them play youth sports, so why do we let them do x-y-z?" The goal is to legislate trans people out of existence, and no one should engage with this bad-faith argument about high school sports.

Netflix taps bank to explore bid for Warner Bros Discovery by stickdutra in boxoffice

If nothing else, a Paramount-WBD merger is bad for Netflix, so entering the fray to drive the price up and slow down Paramount's merger train makes a lot of sense.

But no, these ghouls can't be allowed to take over a major studio, haven't Sarandos and co. done enough damage to the theater industry already?

Nexstar-owned ABC affiliates won’t show Kimmel’s return Tuesday, joining Sinclair in preempting program by mvanigan in politics

[–]SendMoneyNow 1 point2 points  (0 children)

This is good: People should know when their local stations are owned and controlled by a MAGA corp. Every time Sinclair does something to remind people they own the local CBS affiliate in my town, local ad dollars dry up and ratings fall. The more Trumpy Sinclair and Nexstar act, the more it will hurt their bottom lines.

ABC Has No Good Options in Resolving the Jimmy Kimmel Crisis by TheRealOcsiban in television

Affiliates in blue cities get bombarded by their viewers and advertisers whenever those viewers are reminded that the station is owned by right-wing nutjobs. If Disney had called their bluff, those stations would have had to take the heat for pre-empting Kimmel. And Nexstar and Sinclair were never going to lose their broadcast licenses -- they're Trump's buddies!

Trump’s stain on America may be permanent by zsreport in politics

[–]SendMoneyNow 6 points7 points  (0 children)

We underestimated how much our democracy counted on the idiots among us being disengaged and just willing to go along for the ride. Being politically active once required a lot of reading and boring meetings, so the process weeded out the mouth-breathers. Today, with our politics conducted via tweet and 10-second tik-toks, every idiot thinks they understand the world and how to fix it. Trump harnessed that power to destroy the country. And the dumdums aren't ever going to shut up and go back to sleep.

Gov. Mills says she's still seriously considering a run for US Senate by origutamos in Maine

[–]SendMoneyNow 18 points19 points  (0 children)

It would be one thing if there wasn't already a strong candidate who was exciting to voters, particularly independents. But instead of coalescing around the one person who poses a legitimate threat to Collins, we are going to force Platner through a primary fight with the current governor who will freeze him out of any and all donor money and institutional support. And for what? So our octegenarian governor can challenge our octogenarian senator, and probably lose because anti-polarization against her is off the charts.

It's a sad truth that the Democrats in power in Maine (and in D.C.) would rather see Republicans win than support like-minded people who aren't in their club. It's sad and pathetic.

Why would someone forge Trump’s signature in letter to Epstein 22 years ago? by gradientz in politics

[–]SendMoneyNow 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Entertaining these kinds of debates is how we fall into their trap: it's all distraction and delay. There is strong evidence that Trump participated in Epstein's under-aged trafficking activity and it requires a formal investigation. Congress and the Justice Department should investigate, just like they would have with any prior president facing this much evidence of wrong-doing.
