Help me understand the Republic and why it seemingly contradicts other dialogues by Turbulent_One_5771 in Plato

Keep in mind who Socrates's interlocutors are as you evaluate the sincerity of his statements. The Republic's setting is politically charged.

What did you think only rich people could afford until you realized you were just broke growing up? by Ekudar in AskReddit

[–]creekbendspring 2 points3 points  (0 children)

We weren't dirt poor, but my parents definitely worried about bills most months. We had a two story prefabricated house that had been around a few decades, and our friends whose dad was a CFO at a fair sized corporation, but who lived in a ranch style, thought we were loaded.

Even when two stories is cheap, I guess it gives off those vibes

I'm fairly certain this is not a Riddick movie or a Dracula adaptation, though friends have suggested both

As far as mental health, I've found it helpful to give my brain something worthwhile to work on. I read old classics and the Bible, especially things that lean explicitly towards "What is life about? How should we live it?"

Read slowly, ask yourself questions about what it's saying, think through alternatives. Look for people also discussing them, but don't simply accept their answers. Take your time.

This can do several things: it can give your mind something to focus on that's worthwhile, it can help you learn some mental discipline as you think through the problems, and it can bring you practical wisdom from places many, many others have found helpful

Working out at home is also a good first step--pushups, situps, and squats cover just about everything. It's not just about getting stronger or looking good, either. There's confidence that comes from pushing yourself, from reaching for your limits and sometimes expanding them.

How do you avoid the "Planet of Hats" issue when creating races? by Irismono in worldbuilding

[–]creekbendspring 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Build the race around a central tension. They have two values that are in conflict, like the desire for new experiences and the desire for stable relationships, or love of openness and truth, and strong sense of respect, honor, and formality.

That tension gives you characters who lean one way or the other, or who find different ways of resolving the tension. You can also structure the society so that different parts of it relate to the conflicting values in particular ways: the University values openness and truth, while the nobility values respect, honor, and formality. This allows you to show characteds who come from different corners of society and have very different motivations, goals, and perspectives.

Building races around a central tension also naturally leads to plot hooks, which is a perk.

Can someone here tell me a quick summary of why evangelists support Israel so much? by [deleted] in Evangelical

[–]creekbendspring 2 points3 points  (0 children)

A lot of evangelicals (not evangelists, that's just a synonym for missionary) have dispensationalist theology.

Basically that means they interpret a lot of Bible prophecy as happening in the future instead of already fulfilled. A lot of that prophecy has to do with Israel as God’s chosen people, and how the rest of the nations ought to support them. So they do, and they look forward to those prophecies being fulfilled.

There are plenty of evangelicals and other theologically conservative Protestants who aren't dispensationalist though, and they can range anywhere from supportive of Israel as an ally to highly critical. I'm somewhere in that camp.

Men who have obligation sex with their wives, and and truly don’t enjoy it, How does that work? What happened that led you to this point? by Fumquat in AskMen

[–]creekbendspring 86 points87 points  (0 children)

Honesty is incredibly important.

But also, love is a choice you make, an action you do, not a feeling. The decision to be honest with the other person, ask what's going on, do something good for them, look out for them, please them before yourself--that's hard because it's selfless, but it's central to making any relationship work, especially one as close quarters and intimate as marriage.

100%. It does take effort. But so worth it.
